Hi Mark and thank you mate. The sieve works better than I expected. I thought I might have one or two alterations, but all's good up to now. That's right mate, the saving will be more in the winter. I think it will be below 100w. which will be at least a 80w saving. Must admit I do like the pump. I can still turn it up another 50w if I wanted. Thanks mate, Terry.
Another excellent video. I have not had much luck with these type gate valves. Have pretty much standardized use of ball valves. Not as convenient and a bit more expensive but higher successes rate. Hey Terry, great to see it coming together. Can you explain your reasons why you changed to a gravity fed sieve from a suction-based sieve. Like you I have a pump lift to pull into my filtration and having to clean the pre-filter is a never ending chore. I am looking to make a change but haven't landed on anything yet. Thanks.
Hi Zeke, Thank you. There were too many things against the vacuum pre filter. As you may know the paint was coming off and I couldn't get a 100% seal, so it was letting air in, and no matter how I tried I couldn't get a seal. Also when I took the bulkheads out the water had got behind them and started going rusty. The PVC tub wouldn't stand the vacuum so that was no good. So I went for the gravity fed sieve. Must admit it's a lot easier. Thanks mate, Terry.

Decorate that gate valve handle by making a wooden cover for it using your CNC to carve something clever on the face. It's the old 'I meant to do that ploy'.
Hi mate, I got some 15mm pipe, put a slit down it and clipped it on to the shaft of the valve handle. At least it can't be turned off by mistake now. Your right, I've got to hide it somehow lol. Thanks mate, Terry.
Hi again Terry, I wouldn’t worry to much about that gate valve sticking up, you could put a 4” pipe over it, and a cap on top and then paint it black. I think it will blend into the background nicely. Are you still having trouble with the skimmer bump? If so have you thought about replacing it with a new smaller eco pump. Cheers Mark

Hi Dan, Thank you, the mesh on the sieve is a lot bigger than the mesh on the RDF. The sieve is only there to remove the algae and larger waste and keep it from getting into the pond pump and causing problems. Thanks mate, Terry.

That could be done, the problem is I'll have to drain my pond down again as the other 2 gate valves don't stop the flow. @@Wrighty no problem, and as for the other two gate valves I doubt it's the seals, I'd hazard a guess at a dirt build up in the grooves, could possibly need opening and closing a fair few times to try and get them to clear out and seal better, I'm sure you will be able to sort it somehow but for now it all looks great, given me a couple of ideas for my customers ponds that I work on. And an RDF is definitely the way I'm going for my pond, I will be doing your DIY version from your blueprints 👌 take care.

Hey Wrighty, not sure if you've rectified the 90 degree fix, but with the two leaky gate valves shut (passing a small amount, and keeping the one in question in the open position while you do it. The 90 degree shouldn't be too hard. Keeping it in the open position will keep any build up pressure off making it easier.

Hi Simon, Thank you. As it is at the moment, there's not room for another gate valve in there, but good idea. The idea of adding the extra height to the filter box is so the top of the box is above the pond water level, so if for some reason the pump stopped, the filter box would just fill with water, and no water would be lost. Hi Barry, Thank you for your kind comments. With regard to water changes, I simply syphon off around 2 to 3 inches of water and replace it through a 3 canister water filter. Where do you get your metal mesh sieve from mate I’m looking into making one of these but can only find 250 micron or 380 but looking at the evolution aqua ones and equivalent they all seem to be 300micron so that’s what I’m aiming for if poss. But that said do you have a slightly different size one on your diy as your running the drum also?

Hi Humphrey, The sieve filter I've just fitted has to be cleaned. I just lift the mesh tray out and hose it off. The RDF and moving bed are self cleaning. Terry.

Hi John, Wow! that's a hard one to answer. To be honest I didn't keep an account of what I spent mate. The expensive bit for me was getting rid of the soil. I had 2 x 8yd skips at £165.00 each, the pond liner was £450.00. My son did the brickwork as he's a builder which cost me nothing. Bottom drain, 3" pipe and fittings around £200.00. Pump and filters I had already. £115.00 for the temporary pond. Another £150 for wall copings and bit's and pieces. I did all the work myself apart from laying the bricks so that cost me nothing. That's all I can remember at the moment mate. Terry.

totally agree, slide valves are crap, have one on my pond from one of the drains that is stuck open, would like to close it to fit a profi drum before my nexus's but can't close one of the two drain's so think im left with no choice but to drain 2500 gallons out just because of a £40 valve, F.U. valterra

@@Wrighty Hi Terry, i was thinking that but its 5ft deep and i believe i glued the domes in place, i will probably have to drain out about 2 1/2 to 3 ft of water to replace the valve or end up in a tsunami one of the two. I don't actually mind draining it the thing that's more concerning is it took me 4 days to fill it so would be looking at around 2 days to fill it back up, and on a gravity fed system means my filters won't be on for the same period.
@@Wrighty having said that i've just found a framed 1700 gallon swimming pool on amazon for 80 quid, got a spare pump that does 15000 liters an hour, so might be the way to go, an hour to drain and an hour to fill, good time to chop both them valves off and put two ball valves instead
Hi mate, I was going to suggest a temp pool. You can always keep it for a treatment/quarantine pond if needed. I've got exactly the same problem mate. I'm 4ft deep but I'm going to try to bung mine off as I can get the lid off the bottom drain. I have a stand by pressure filter for times like these, that I just connect up to the pond and it keeps my bio filters going while my RDF's stopped. Why dont you use rubber connection fittings instead of glue fittings , they would have come in handy with that gate valve not working and been easier to replace

Wrighty drum would be better as it will have a larger capacity and will be able to handle the flow rate From the drum then to the moving bed then back to the pond but a very slow rate as the water needs to be in contact with the media as long as possible
The idea is that the sieve will keep the pond pump clean of larger dirt. It's more of a pre pump filter. The way I had it set up, I was cleaning the pump basket every day. As my system is pump fed, I need cleaner water going to the pump. Terry.

you can use a soldering iron for tacking it works as well as a tacking jet
I know you can mate, but if I'm heating the gun to weld, I may as well use it. I do think it's better though. Terry.
@@Wrighty in the days when the jets were screw in they were a pain to change and in my plastic factory they had habit of going missing i think 15 years ago i was paying around 6o pounds each from W G T your set up is looking great does the sieve clean itself best regards
Hi Humphrey, The sieve filter I've just fitted has to be cleaned. I just lift the mesh tray out and hose it off. The RDF and moving bed are self cleaning. Terry.

Hi Hieu, thank you. With the amount of fine algae I've got coming through from the pond, I clean it in the morning and at night, It only takes 2 seconds as I just pick it out. It's a 60 mesh but not sure of the micron. Thanks, Terry.

Hi John, Wow! that's a hard one to answer. To be honest I didn't keep an account of what I spent mate. The expensive bit for me was getting rid of the soil. I had 2 x 8yd skips at £165.00 each, the pond liner was £450.00. My son did the brickwork as he's a builder which cost me nothing. Bottom drain, 3" pipe and fittings around £200.00. Pump and filters I had already. £115.00 for the temporary pond. Another £150 for wall copings and bit's and pieces. I did all the work myself apart from laying the bricks so that cost me nothing. That's all I can remember at the moment mate. Terry.

Hi Al, The reason I do most of this is because I have 40 good sized koi in a small pond, and I have to say my water quality is spot on. But at the end of the day to be honest, I really enjoy doing it. No offence taken mate. Thanks, Terry.
totally agree, slide valves are crap, have one on my pond from one of the drains that is stuck open, would like to close it to fit a profi drum before my nexus's but can't close one of the two drain's so think im left with no choice but to drain 2500 gallons out just because of a £40 valve, F.U. valterra
Hi Michael, Can you get the top off your bottom drain? I'm going to take the top off mine and put a 3" bung in the pipe. I know I've got to go under water to get it in, but it will save me draining the pond completely. Just wondered if you could do something similar. Terry.
@@Wrighty Hi Terry, i was thinking that but its 5ft deep and i believe i glued the domes in place, i will probably have to drain out about 2 1/2 to 3 ft of water to replace the valve or end up in a tsunami one of the two.
I don't actually mind draining it the thing that's more concerning is it took me 4 days to fill it so would be looking at around 2 days to fill it back up, and on a gravity fed system means my filters won't be on for the same period.
@@Wrighty having said that i've just found a framed 1700 gallon swimming pool on amazon for 80 quid, got a spare pump that does 15000 liters an hour, so might be the way to go, an hour to drain and an hour to fill, good time to chop both them valves off and put two ball valves instead
Hi mate, I was going to suggest a temp pool. You can always keep it for a treatment/quarantine pond if needed. I've got exactly the same problem mate. I'm 4ft deep but I'm going to try to bung mine off as I can get the lid off the bottom drain. I have a stand by pressure filter for times like these, that I just connect up to the pond and it keeps my bio filters going while my RDF's stopped. Why dont you use rubber connection fittings instead of glue fittings , they would have come in handy with that gate valve not working and been easier to replace

Is the drum the first filter from the pond ?

Wrighty drum would be better as it will have a larger capacity and will be able to handle the flow rate
From the drum then to the moving bed then back to the pond but a very slow rate as the water needs to be in contact with the media as long as possible
The idea is that the sieve will keep the pond pump clean of larger dirt. It's more of a pre pump filter. The way I had it set up, I was cleaning the pump basket every day. As my system is pump fed, I need cleaner water going to the pump. Terry.
