Fantastic update! You really have managed to capture the Japanese ‘feel’ of a rail system. You could probably put more residential homes quite close to the rail (they don’t really seem to have any issues with how close the homes are to the tracks). The background is ‘Asian’ and works for a Japanese city. Loving how this looks and the paddy fields are amazing!
Hello Mike. I've been watching your channel for some time now, and finally something Japanese! I've been around model railways all of my life, starting in OO with a layout in the garden. My father got me in to N when I was young as I could play inside in the winter and get so much more on a board! 40 years later and I am the chairman of my local club and the only one that models Japanese railways! More colourful and exciting than our native stuff in my opinion (before I get shot down by trolls). Well done Mike.😊
Thanks for the support. Japanese N is so reliable and cheap, UK people can get upset about that but it's true. N just gives you so much more room, once you realise that OO is to big you can't un see it lol. Which club is that please?
Well done sir, your Japanese layout is simply AMAZING.!!. I take my hat off to you. I love British railways, I even got a job with British Rail when I left school, but as regards making a Japanese N gauge layout has been an amazing idea, I personally find it fascinating and very interesting to see how other countries run their railways, and what better way to do that than build a layout. So once again, well done sir. 🙂👍🚂
Well, I am one of those still watching. As usual, the right balance: plenty to look at but without clutter. I have always thought UK trains of the mid to late 20th century had a pleasing character. That visual appeal is nowadays to be found in many of the more stylish trains of Japan - both locomotives and multiple units. Kato captures this style and allies it to unparalleled reliability. Combining that with your infectious enthusiasm does us all a power of good!
since rediscovering model railways, I've worked around the web looking at different scales, ideas, modelling etc. I've now incorporated wargaming terrain and figures into the layout. This hobby needs as much support with a variety of interests. I am please to see the younger generation taking up the hobby and I would strongly advise them to incorporate other hobbies into this one. As for this layout, I'm enjoying it and your channel
This is looking amazing, the buildings look great, the track looks fine to me now you have added some greenery and background really sets it off. Great work Mike 👍
That's fabulous Mike! The track has a lovely flow to it and the juxtaposition of modern city and rural really shouts Japanese. The diagonal headshunt across the paddy field/crops is brilliant. Well done 😊
I'm going to do a Japanese Shinkansen layout. I picked up Kato's Shinkasen starter set. It's only available in Japan for some reason. It comes with the double track set, two trains, and two controllers. When I first saw the Japanese J500 bullet train, I couldn't stop myself. I'll have to make it modular. I envision trains going all out, passing by each other thru varied terrain. Rice paddies. and cherry blossoms are a must.
As a uk N/00/0 gauge collector i must say that the japanese railways are interesting eniugh to model, i can really enjoy any country modelled. This is a nice layout as i always like the creativity you put in those little layouts.
Great looking layout i must have missed the last update, am sure theres still plenty of people interested, I always like seeing something different at exhibitions, one of the best buys I had was an N gauge Fleischmann train set for 65.00, hopefully one day Ill be able to turn it into a scenic swiss layout, Ive collected bits and bobs cheap from exhibitions so maybe one day if i ever get any of my other projects finished I'll be able to get started on it one day, I look forward to your next update. Tom
I'm not massive on stuff outside of the UK but that's my personal interest! Still found this layout really interesting! The kits look really good too! Keep it going!
Hello, what a amazing layout, the scenery is fantastic with the grass and etc, anything in N is definitely worth viewing to see, different combined ones are great.
You mention the folk who wander off, or switch the clip off, when they see it isn't UK outline and it isn't OO. A few years ago, I was on Eastleigh station taking photos and one of the local spotters was nearby - really a long way gone into his obsession with UK OO! He was commenting on some of the model exhibitions he'd visited and he got to talking about one in Gosport. "Nice little exhibition," he said. "But it's all American N!" Perhaps the name of the organisers should have told him something 'The American Model Railroad Group' . . . Another great video! Keep them coming.
No need to apolgise for your model, everything we do in life will attract nay-sayers. I live in Thailand and your model has given me food for thought. Without easy access to UK models which also attract high import costs, the Kato and Tomix ranges are a real possibility here. Thank you 👍
Dont worry about numbers, this is a great layout,I have pinched the track plan for my n american overflow yard. I have run it and even though I have cut the length to 1.40 there is a great amount of shunting. Keep up the good work
As usual you've produced a fantastic layout, thanks to you I've also gone down the Japanese route and I'm finding it fascinating although as you know I use Tomix track and stock
As someone using Kato track for my layout, this layout is great and gives me the confidence to continue as lots of negative about Kato track out there. Thing i have learnt is the only person to please is me.
I really enjoyed seeing your layouts. This one is unique yet familiar if you follow your work. I actually use American 3 rail o-gauge but don’t have a lot of space so I’m trying to adapt some of your techniques in the larger scale. Simplifying the track plan opens up more room for scenery and brings down the cost because points are expensive no matter which gauge you use.
WOW!!! thiis is amazing!!! I love the models and the Kato track is *fantastic* - i'd have reliable running over ballast any day (Flieschmann fan here) - the rural and the rice/paddy fields are fantastic. Edit - watched to the - end - my good lady is from South Korea - its really hard to find decent models in any gauge of famous trains like the KTX - I got a fantastic push-out model of Seoul Station - i just wish the trams and trains of Korea where better represented in the model railway market !
It's a really good layout and has a definite Japanese look, the Kato unitrack is much maligned by a lot of model Railway builders, I'm the only member of our club who uses it, well done, George
It's utterly reliable, but then so is ballast mat, which again very few people use. I think ballasting has become a self imposed right of passage for model railways lol
The rice paddy looks accurate as well as the rest of the layout. The city portion could use lots of people. In Naha I observed business people rushing to appointments. Teachers with their children in matching uniforms on a Saturday school outing. There were the street vendors selling chicken and fish on a skewers along with veggies and bowls of rice. Lots of cars and busses bumper to bumper during the rush hour. Some cars had lights on the under frame; (boy racers, I suppose). Grocery stores and markets with lots of signage, some of it featuring Anime type cartoon figures. There is a lot to learn when modeling a foreign country. I enjoyed my travels in Japan.
Love it! My only comment would be to rotate one of the two smaller buildings, a blue one and a light brown one. Currently they’re in the same aspect and look odd. If you rotate the light brown one 90 degrees, you’d disguise that 😊 I like different things, so more power to you Sir!
I like it, I'm considering the building of a kato N Gauge Layout in the future and setting aside money for doing this all my model layouts to date have been traditional oo gauge british type, so building something different interests me and your videos are very helpful at this time, regards, Colin.
"Different", ie not UK, or to a lesser extent US, layouts are always interesting. Well, they are to me anyway. I love that backscene. I've just bought a load of Kato track for an ammo box project and, while in it's new state it does stand out, as you rightly say, once it's bedded in to the scenery you can't beat it. I don't know if you've looked at scenic stuff on Temu? Just took delivery of my first order today and it seems to be pretty good - some of it exactly the same as much more expensive branded stuff. Cheers
Looks great! The water and rice field turned out very well. I look forward to seeing it running. I know that you use the card for tarmacs and roads painted and black washed-have you every done a tutorial on that? I've seen pretty much all your videos and I haven't seen one that I could recall. Perhaps another video idea? Just a thought and keep up the great work!
I model UK N gauge based in the1930's. On TH-cam I subscribe to US, UK, Australian, New Zealand, Indian, Japanese and German railway modellers working in N, OO, HO, S, O(English and American) G with periods from 1800's to Modern day, all of them provided something to learn from. I also follow Wargaming channels, military modellers and diorama makers, again who offer different techniques to learn and take inspiration from. Limiting you self to a small subset limits what you can learn. As regards Kato track being toy like, I've seen basement empires in the states built with Kato track, and when it's all sceniced, you can't tell whether it's Kato, Peco flextrack or any other track, I've also seen Peco track looking toy like! It all depends on how you finish it...
Looks great - and there is nothing wrong with a Japanese layout.
