Let's see how the offset flail does on the buckwheat!!

  • The buckwheat was in blossom, it's time to mow it down and let it compost into the soil. There are several to choose from when planting for the purpose of green manure. Buckwheat, winter rye and annual alfalfa being the the best. Some will also use winter peas or crimson clover, sometimes it depends on your area, soil and climate. Green manure puts natural nitrogen back into the soil, it is used in place of animal based manure.

    I'm loving that flail mower, but I'm really loving that you're flying that flag on the back. Thanks for the video!

      This mower is so nice, hopefully it holds up over time. The flag speaks for itself, we need more of that in this country, thanks for watching.

    So impressed that you’re setting that nitrogen at the right time. That flail mower would allow you to skip the disking and tillage in general. Top-dress and plant right in to what you’ve got. Build that soil profile. Skip the American flag too. More of our European and Canadian neighbors are doing no-till than we are. Most of the flail mowers are Italian! Molto bene!

      Thanks for watching and commenting. I did skip the disking, the flail did a real nice job, so I skipped that part. Hard for us to do no till seeding with the equipment that we have, but I'd love to do that.
      PS
      the American flag stays

    My Granddad and Dad would turn that growth under with moldboard plows. That is free fertilizer and will build up the land. Previous generations here in Georgia beloved in planting cover crops over the winter and turning the crops under in the early spring. That would put nutrients and organic matter in the soil. That helps a lot when you are working fine grained red clay soils.

      This is old school for sure, my father in law has been a great teacher over the years. This will be turned under, some day maybe I'll have a moldboard plow for this tractor and do it the method you mentioned. But for now I don't, so I mow it down and disc it under. Then in the fall we plant winter rye in this entire field, that also gets turned under in the spring.

    Nice job. That buckwheat looked real good. I use rye for the winter crop and buckwheat right after we harvest the garlic. It's no where near the amount you plant though. We cut the buckwheat down and let it set a few days then till it in and plant the garlic. You're right the buckwheat doesn't mulch that well, not like rye anyway, although rye seems to have a tougher root ball. Your flail mower did an excellent job in my opinion. Looks like you're going to have some good crop this year. Again great video.

      Thank you, that means a lot!!
      Sounds like a similar rotation that we use, winter rye cover in the fall that gets turned in in the spring, then the buckwheat simply for nutritional value to put back in the soil. Oddly, we used to grow a lot of garlic, we had several return customers each year, then they started growing their own and it kind of fizzled out. So, we started growing more potatoes and we found a good market for them. Personally I'd like to start growing more garlic again, we'll see what this fall brings.

      @@ElkCreekAcres we don't sell any vegetable .. Yet. Mostly give to family and close friends. I'm considering the thought of selling vegetables, which of course means new equipment "John deere 2025r or 2038r." just saying, lol. The rye also helps keep the weeds down due to the fact the rye blocks the sun for the weeds. I also use grass clippings during the summer. That also has a few benefits. Thanks for the reply and keep up the good videos.

      Mine has hammers, does a great job on anything I've cut with it so far, but rocks are very tough on them.

    What do you do with Buckwheat ?

    • @ElkCreekAcres
      @ElkCreekAcres  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      We honestly only grow it for soil management and for the nutritional value that it puts back in the soil, otherwise known as green manure. Last year we had an exceptional crop and had talked about mowing it and baling it for straw, but dragging out all of our big equipment for maybe 6 bales didn't seem worth it.

      Too much nut grass, every time I till in that field it just spreads it. But I will disc it in.
