Interesting about the 0710 Leeds-London ‘Yorkshire Pullman’, by 1994 it was running as two separate trains at 0700 and 0720, both calling Wakefield and the earlier one calling also at Doncaster, then non-stop to Kings Cross arr 0904 and 0918. Both were named Yorkshire Pullman with full dining etc, clearly a popular business service!

The Ticket Inspector at the beginning was a bloke called Peter Kirton who's son was a friend of one of my sons and lived near us. Unfortunately he died last year with cancer He was a Signalman around the Leeds - Wakefield area before that.Glad you enjoyed it Dave.Trevor.''

Peter was a Trains Inspector, very knowledgeable railwayman from Normanton area. Based at York in his latter days. I was fortunate to work with him along with his other colleagues.

The ECML had the greatest investment with electrification and new train sets, meanwhile on the WCML where i worked, we soldiered on with old Mk2 coaches and class 86 locomotives.

I still like seeing the on-board camera in First. Plus the fare-dodgers.

Peter Kirton wrote a great book about life on the railways which he signed a copy for me. It was Proceed at Caution published in 1998. It's worth looking out for.

Don't miss those stupid booking on times, by the time the driver works his first train he's already been up nearly 4.5 hrs and expected to be fully alert. Presumably he'd be working back from London so likely to be fatigued something which BR never took seriously. Try doing a turn like that for a week and you'd be knackered by the end if it.
