I was privileged to instruct at the first HPDE in 2001 at the newly restored VIR. It was instantly one of my favorite tracks and I came back many times. Thank you Peter, Connie, and the rest for having the vision and making it happen.
I was going to ask if this used to be a rally track, then I realized that this is used to be a rally track! I had NO idea that there was THIS much work to do! WOW!!!!
I drove a good friend of mines RX-8 here back in 2019 when they had the charity lap event and I feel in love, I've never been there before I've never driven on the track and I've never driven an RX8 6 speed before
I've been bringing my RX-8 up from Cary for pretty much every charity lap event for the last 10 years. Hope we can get at least one in 2021. Love the track!
NASCAR needs a Cup race here. A few well placed grandstands like The Glen and you will easily get 100,000 + including infield spectators. My favorite road course in the South. The Roval at Charlotte is OK but it's not a real road course.
I got to do, what I believe was one of the early motorcycle track days, on the restored track....spring of 2002(?). I was impressed, ooh, fresh pavement on a real road course. They didn't even have the buildings built on the front straight yet. I did a drive around on the access road..I saw a "Gulf" painted sports car in an ole wooden garage/barn, I think it was a Ford GT 40 (?). Does that ring any bells?
To VIR: I appreciate your retrospective videos with comparisons to the modern up to date driving tour. The symmetry of the time-lapse is excellent. Well done. The key is to chop down trees (for they kill people and destroy property), deforest, undertake a project of the immense tract; build domiciles, businesses, and communities.
Trees too close to the track, Bad. Trees everywhere else, Good! The trees and landscape are part of what makes VIR so great. And I miss the Oak Tree. :-(

From abandoned track/farmland to one of the best tracks in the country!
Don narrating, David Bradyhouse in the back seat, Connie in the passenger seat, Lynne in the back seat and me driving! Fun stuff in 1998!
Thank you for documenting such a historic piece. Amazing how far she's come!
i have enjoyed doing countless laps there
Its a fantastic course, you guys really did a spectacular job bringing it back to life. Thank you!!

Not been to the real track but it’s my favourite track in the iRacing sim. So fun and challenging. Hope to visit or even drive there IRL.
Such a Beautiful Facility, Great to see it in person 2017, wanting to make it back in 2020 🏁🏁🏁🏁🏁
Great work guys! Lots of progress in a relatively short amount of time.
LOVE VIR! Awesome video, thanks for posting this!

Great tour folks. Thanks so much.
Lovely venue. I’m going to get there.
Love this place
Great video. Thx for posting.
The 1998 video looks more like 1960s when I was there racing on that very track, not 1998!!

I remember seeing the Trans-Am weekend here in '02 (and plenty of visits since). That's a lot of work in just a couple of years.

So are you being sarcastic or serious or what? Whats your angle here man?

What years was racing done there originally? BTW I love VIR and never miss the Heacock Classic.
It originally opened in 1957
@@mikerose6696 Thank you for that. Do you happen to know when they stopped. I would guess in the late 60's by the condition of the track in '98.

what's with all the tire barriers coming out of oaktree?
Maintenance and preparation for the new season.
Exactly like Peter said. Just more upgrades for the upcoming season for more safety to drivers.
@@VIRnow1957 Thanks! Looking forward to getting back up there for march madness!

Is the 1998 footage taken from the Blair Witch Project?
Time to resurrect Greenwood Roadway in Iowa.
How long did the track sit abandoned until the video in 1998?
from 1974 to 1998 the land was used for grazing... while the track was left to be reclaimed by nature
1998’s video is faded
This happened before the coronavirus came
this is not 2020?
The audio is from 1998 as is the upper screen. Lower half of the video is 2020.
The new owners are total aholes
