I've always liked and wanted to try the Vango Force Ten Xenon range of tents. Luckily my brother offered me his new F10 Xenon UL 2+ tent to try. So with lock down still restricting where I could camp I headed for Whitelee wind farm. It turned out to be a more useful tent test than I thought. Due to a shortage of time and a tight weather window this is filmed in the dark, my apologies folks, maybe I'll get a daylight video made soon !

Hello Andrew! We have an F10 Erebus 3+ and we had it out end of October in winds of 25-48 mph max including short gusts of maybe 50. No issues whatsoever. The idea is from a chap called Rick. I got 8 tarp clamps from Lomo with 6" diameter bungee loops and broke out some extra pegs. On this occasion I used 4. 1 Lomo on the outer at the long section clamped at ground level on each side, 1 at the back and 1 on the front. It transformed the dynamics of the tent. Wind was hitting at around the 4-5 o'clock position but it swung broadside at times. Also with very heavy rain. Around 20 hours of high winds at one time, but winds and rain were with us the whole 6 days out. The outer was nice and taut and no inner touching outer issues at all. I got about 3" clearance between. It seemed to transform the tent's structural stability. The TBS system can be adjusted to work better with this set up. No pole strains evident at all. A pleasure to be in it. My partner is very nervous of bad weather in a tent but she was fine with this setup. Actually she got into it. There was none of that rearward buckling you showed, and the Erebus is a bigger tent. I assume it's because the outer was reinforced and the whole structure was taking the wind and working with the quite light TBS tensioning I set.

Looks like I made the right decision in my 'battle of the tunnel tents'. Totally agree about the pencil thin poles. Not had the sydvang sydvang 2p in a full side wind yet but when tacking somewhat in strong winds I feel it fared much better. Two guying points on each pole plus a point on the ground mid panel help. Thanks for this Andrew and a noble effort in 100% dark! Though I guess in Scotland now near the winter solstice you only get 1 hr of daylight, ha!
Hi Dave, that would make a big difference for sure, maybe that's the model to go for , I must watch your video again, I think the only 'downside' I recall is it's only 120 wide ? And yes I've started using bat clicks to get about here, there's about 4 hours of daylight if you're lucky ;-)
Andrew, I am finding your videos very useful as I slowly come to a decision as to which tent to invest in for my future adventures. I learn something new each time!

I got this tent for summer campsite camping for the decent space/weight ratio, wouldnt use it on exposed high ground but it has its uses, enjoy all your tent reviews 👍🏻

Have the a Erebus which basically a slightly bigger version and longer version of the xenon (i don't have the extended porch). Like it for cycle touring as you can pull all pannier bags inside and it has tons of space, quick and simple to pitch. Poles are a bit lightweight but generally can find a fairly sheltered spot when cycling. Would prob be fine for hills if you know the winds won't be that high. Take a hilleberg if its gonna be stormy!
At least you got your outdoor fix Andrew , the tent had loads of room but once that wind and rain started pushing the outer in it was game over . On a better day it would be a great 2 man tent .atb Dave
A quick fix Dave, nightmare to film , yes I really like it but I do think it needs double guy points and maybe a peg point half way down the fly edges, nice tho. A
Very helpful video Andrew.... It tells me what I needed to know.... Do I assume from your experience with the Vango tunnel tent that all tunnel tents would have had the water ingress like the Vango seemed to do?
Hi, no I wouldn't expect any Vango tents to leak in my experience. All nicely taped and suitable for wet European conditions.
somehow I'd be a tad nervous with such a sizeable tent and at such low weight, you cannae deny the laws of physics, Andrew. Somewhere, somehow there's going to be a reckoning. Other than that I'd be tempted and envious.

@@AndrewParkOutdoors I’m on the hunt for a 3/4 person, 3/4 season tent. Weight isn’t such an issue as I will mostly be staying in the one place for protracted periods of time. The place is on a moor, exposed to the prevailing Westerlies, though there is a more sheltered spot.
Stability and space for me and my 2 dogs is important.
I’ve saved quite hard so money is less of an issue. I see this as an investment 😊
I just want to get the right tent.
( I’ve wild camped for over 40 years so I’ve had a huge range of tents and experience over the years )

I have the ul model in a four man size. It works well in most weather so far in my testing. I would call it more of a three man tent but that’s how they size it. Check it out I think you would like it.
Do you mean the F10 Erebus 3+? We had it out in a named storm last Oct and it performed really well.

Good video Andy. I am a tunnel tent advocate but as you said it’s all about compromise. Not great for exposed pitches unless wind direction is guaranteed. Saying that I’ve had my Nanok domus duo and lightwave T’s out in 50 plus mph with no issues. I’ve got the xenon too, great wee tent. Leadhills for me this week due to local lockdown.......ATB 👍👍👍👍.
Is yours the xenon 2? I liked the look of the non extended version more than this
@@AndrewParkOutdoors it is Andy, it pitches quite tight and is less flappy.....total bargain too if you shop online, specifically a retailer in paisley 👍👍. I really should just buy a Hilly Soulo and be done with it but the hilly fanboys and the price are a real turnoff😂😂

@@AndrewParkOutdoors Enjoyed that, Andrew. Cheers. I got a Xenon 2 from Summits earlier this year, so it was good to see how you got on with the 2+. I've only tested mine on one night in the Lakes so far but I was pleased with it, did ok. Bit of a stiff breeze but wasn't too windy. It definitely needs pitching well though and keep your fingers crossed the wind doesn't change. For me the main advantage is the modest 1.9 kg for the amount of space for one person plus kit. Bang on with the guy lines too - I replaced mine with a nice luminous green. As Mountain_Del says, Hillebergs are just too expensive and this'll do me just fine! All the best.

I have had two fjallraven tunneltents. The cope a lot betrer with sidewinds.
Have an Abisko lite 2 and it copes very well in high winds, regardless of direction.
baaa you bottles it man. There's noooo way that tent would have collapsed. Have faith sir. They are designed to cope.
It was more that it wasn't mine and I didn't fancy handing it back with bent or broken poles :-)
Hi Andrew , was there any condensation problems with this tent ? I’m thinking of switching to this tent from my Tempest 200 because of the amount of condensation coming in. The Tempest i would say is a well ventilated wee tent but after 3 camps in various conditions I get wet sleeping bag and the inner tent I s saturated; cheers mate .
With the sheer space plus a combo of 4 vents ( if you include the door zips ) you can really ventilate it to suit. Also the very thin inner fabric is probably going to breathe better than a thicker polyester inner. I think a foot print in the vestibule will help a lot though as that area of wet grass could cause a lot of internal moisture in its own right.

Ooft, no one answer, it'll depend on whether you need say 3 season lightness over 4 season strength and whether it needs its own poles or uses walking poles etc.

I haven't hilleberg nammj it doesn't do what this tent did even in a 50 mile an hour wind I think what you pay is what you get
I think you're right Al, the Nammatj is bombproof compared to the F10 though I still wouldn't like to camp side on in the Nammatj either ( I used to have one ). A
