@1:38 -- I have a hard time explaining this to non-photographers and even a fair number of avid photographers, and that is: "color can be a distraction" (wait for mind blown) ... It's all just data -- if the data is not with us, it's against us -- focus on what supports the theme of the image or feeling you wish to convey.

A problem with setting the camera to black and white is that the black and white I want is beyond the capacity of my camera.

That's why I'm alwat6s taking the RAw files and editing them after. Raw files are not B&W. Just your in camera preview. I'm always editing with Silver, Blackroom etc after the facts. It's the seeing in monochrome that matters.

This is what many don't understand or dismiss about dedicated Monochrome Cameras. By NOT having an RGB filter array on the sensor the camera is ONLY seeing tones of light rather than values of RGB. This helps not only in True gray tones and all the inner-tones that color translations lose in the process but you get almost medium/large format detail and almost an extra stop of light. The image on monochrome sensors are crisp and subjects pop because of the smoother gradations of gray tones.
This is why I have a problem when TH-camrs who say there is no difference in monochrome camera files vs. converting your color Raw files to b&w. That tells me that they have never used a monochrome camera... however, there is a learning curve with those cameras which the revisualization process is the same as using b&w film, as in using color lens filters and the chance of easily blowing out your highlights.
If one is Really serious about true b&w photography, a monochrome camera is the way to go. It is honest and true to the imaging.

Ya I was just shooting film this week. But this is not super practical for most. Also it really does not change what we're talking about there. Using film does not magically make a B&W good anymore than using Leica.

Color is just a record of existing reality, black and white is the artist defining his/her reality.

Nah, colour is a creative choice and not necessarily have anything to do with reality.

Shooting for monochrome is misunderstood seemingly. Many photographers have started with digital cameras and really don’t get monochrome. It isn’t about absence of colour it’s about tonality and texture. There is no good reason to see the image in mono through the viewfinder. That’s not it at all. Being aware of light and how it is reflected from the key elements in the scene is more important. When shooting film, shadow detail is important so metering decisions are made from that point of view. Digital allows more deliberate over-exposure and the benefits are there for texture and tonality. A mono viewfinder limits perception of the scene. If you can produce tonality in your files then you can play with the resultant image in monochrome. Mono cameras are tools for making tonal files but then you must use optical filters to shift the tonality in camera. Film is a wholly different ball-game. It requires more considerations that involve pre-visualisation and choice of film and the intentions about exposure, development and printing. The same film can be treated several different ways and can can be aesthetically extremely different according to treatment and exposure decisions. Some films are better suited to certain feels than others when you get to know them. I like your images!

You can get the same tones and texture from a monochrome camera or a color raw file conversion. The only real advantage monochrome cameras really have is better ISO performance. Seeing in monochrome however will help you get better results.
