Somehow, Brett seems to convey a background in stage acting, while at the same time taking full advantage of the ability of film to capture subtleties in sound and expression. He mixes grand gestures with extremely slight mannerisms. He is simply mesmerizing to watch.

His grand gestures and movements inspired by his theatre work might have appeared ridiculous but instead he manages to have them reinforce the idea of Holmes as a special sort of eccentric.

    Brett's Holmes is dual natured:
    A self controlled addict.
    Icy cold yet compassionate.
    Restrained yet Prone to outburst.
A lover of both art and science.
A man with a great sense of justice who looks the other way.
A man of a million interests who is prone to boredom.
A man of facts who relies on imagination.
A man who feeds his mind while starving his body.
    etc. etc. etc...
I watched this Brett/Holmes series when it originally aired in the 80's and have been an addict ever since. I have found no antidote, replacement nor equal.

Since Jeremy Brett died in 1995, I think his Holmes must be described in the past tense.
Was he a complete oxymoron, or a renaissance man for his age, or a renaissance man who came into fruition in Britain toward the end of Queen Victoria reign over what was a vast Empire?

I agree 💯 I was glued to the screen those days!!!
But i must say Sherlock Holmes Series by Benedict Cumberbatch is perfection of our times, having a Sherlock in our world❤️ The Way he do the Beneadict!! So Well played! John “the Hobbit” plays so Well! Mycroft Holmes! Just Wow! Irene Adler??? Wooo so sexy next to the 80’ Series🥰
I Will not compare the versions decades apart! By any means!
But Benedict Cumberbatch does the perfect job of the Modern Sherlock!!!
I really enjoy these Old episodes of the Old fashion Sherlock!
Every period of Sherlock is made so Well! Even the older versions, match the time and What you expect of Sherlock! ❤️

    At 37:18 "JOHN!"
Something I never would have expected to come out of the mouth of Sherlock Holmes. A simple calling out of a man's name, but also the acknowledgement of years of friendship. A simple expression that says; "Oh, thank God it's YOU! I've come back! I see YOU! My friend! My FRIEND, you're HERE, thank God!"
Nobody but a true aficionado of Holmes could appreciate the depth of that simple "JOHN".

A turning point in this series occurs at 8:07 when Holmes spills out his vial of cocaine and buries the hypodermic on the beach. Jeremy Brett had the scene deliberately written into this episode as he had become increasingly concerned with depicting Holmes' addiction, which he felt inappropriate for a character seen by children as a hero. He consulted with Dame Jean Doyle, the daughter of Arthur Conan-Doyle, and the Doyle estate before having the scene written in.

Many happy hours spent with friends and family starting with the question - “Shall we take a bottle of wine to Jeremy’s bench?” . We always raise a glass in his honour.

Brett was the 3rd Holmes iteration I was introduced to. RDJ and Cumberbatch came first. When my grandparents introduced me to his Sherlock and this iteration of Watson, their rendition blew me away. I've been binge watching them nonstop and I dread the day I run out. All of the people involved in this show were a treasure. This show itself is a treasure and has helped me through a dark time. They all earned their rest. I hope the ones still alive are safe and taken care of.

Also, the same theme exists in Poirot's movie, Evil Under the Sun. He gets recommended a small, secluded corner of paradise in which he must rest for 2 weeks to recover mentally and to replenish energetically and when he gets there he stumbles upon serial killers, drug dealers and scammers. Funny stuff :)

The only thing that worries me... is that the next time someone lit that murderous lamp in the Tregallis drawing room - the lamp that Holmes left HALF the burned, and unburned, poison on! - the "Devil's Foot Root" would be unleashed to kill again!😱I'm fully aware that It's only a work of fiction... but still! no one can compare to Brett’s Sherlock . My nr 2 is cumberbatch.
Wonderfully modernized ,I’m my opinion by the brilliant mark gatis!
Even if the stories are modernized , he really interprets the role with the same glimpses of icy cold intelligence, complete oblivion to some issues, partial insanity and wonderful sharp arrogance ,as mr Brett does😅
