I don't think it really matters how you pronounce it lol cause even the boys say it differently depending on English or Korean. But in Korean, the letter 'w' doesn't really exist so that's why I guess the proper way would be 'ooyoung'
It actually does cuz 웨 and 위 are both w(and a couple others) sounds but I guess it depends
ayanna a. You’re right, there are a couple ‘w’ letters in korean like you listed (와, 위, 웨, 왜 etc) but Wooyoung in korean isn’t actually spelt with a w. It’s spelt like 우영- the first letter makes a double oo sound and I guess in translation a ‘w’ was added to make it easier to say for us english speakers. So yeah you’re both right! 😁

I'm 9 months late, but as a Korean, you nailed it on the head- both people above are correct. The 'w' SOUND exists in Korean, but the letter does not. So in English, a syllable like 위 would be romanized with a 'w' because it has the 'w' sound. 우영 would also be romanized with a 'w' but not because it has the 'w' sound, but because it's easier for non-Korean speakers to say it. So absolutely correct.
[General Comment]
If someone pronounces it "Wooyoung," I'm not gonna pounce on them (like I would if someone pronounced "Yeosang" like "Yo-sang," but even then it's just a matter of education!), because it was literally spelled like that to be easier to pronounce. Same thing with Lee. In Korean, the 'L' sound AND letter exist, but it's pronounced "ee." However, the "L" is added to make it easier to pronounce. And again, I doubt any Korean would pounce on anyone for not pronouncing Lee the correct way.
[Extra Tangent That is Completely Unrelated to the Comment but I Wrote Anyway Cause I Was Bored]
So at the end of the day, here's my perspective to anyone reading this that might be worried about mispronouncing idols' names. If you see a name starting with a 'W', it won't be technically correct but it's perfectly fine to pronounce the 'W', it's honestly expected out of most foreigners. No one's holding a knife to people's throat and forcing them to say "ee" instead of "Lee," cause that just doesn't make sense. Of course, there's a certain line where you shouldn't be blatantly mispronouncing names/not listening to others when they correct you, but most people shouldn't worry too much, especially at the beginning. I've talked to some people who are scared of being cancelled for this. HONESTLY, the only thing most people really care about is people making even a tiny bit of effort to learn proper pronunciation, and adapting when people correct you. The only times I've seen people cancelled for mispronunciation is when they blatantly disrespect their names, make no effort to try the easiest of pronunciations, or think that they're better than others for it. Yunho, San and Seonghwa along with one other person are supposed to be in a kpop group in the drama and Jongho is in another group with other actors. I haven't read the comic yet so I don't know the specifics but this is the general info I remember reading from twitter

You don't pronounce the W since the letter doesn't even exist in Korean:) all of the "woo" names start with "ㅜ" which is the Korean letter for U but it's not pronounced like the U at the beginning of English words so they write the ㅜ as woo

Lol. The W is silent in Wooyoung. The reason there is a W there is because historically Korean names have been romanized with a hard consonant in the beginning, even though it's not pronounced that way. Like the last name Lee is just pronounced ee in Korean. But I guess a long time ago they thought English speaking people would refuse to accept Ee, so they wrote it Lee. And to this day, there are a lot of names that are romanized with a consonant in the beginning that doesn't actually exist in the name.
