This week’s video is about the idea of freedom, settling down, and familial responsibilities. My story is deeply influenced by norms in Hispanic culture, and I wanted to share my experiences with you, as well as my current lifestyle situation and goals.
I will share these words with you, told to me long ago by a good friend:
“People who chose to stay in one place, to be caregivers, to take less risks, to work steady jobs that can always put meals on the table… those people are not only strong but expressions of love and - I believe - should be celebrated no less than those who chose to live differently. Whatever yours is, each of us has a story worth sharing.” READ MORE BELOW ⬇️

To be clear: I still love watching movies and reading books about extraordinary people who live their lives in unique ways apart from the masses. They inspire me, and in some ways, I like to try to live differently to some mainstream trends. Something that comes to mind is that I don’t like over consumption and am personally very concerned about the environment.
Many of these extraordinary people have unusual jobs, pursue their passions, are very self reliant, free of certain common commitments, world travelers, can fund their lifestyle, etc. These people are celebrated, as they should be! They are amazing and interesting and their story - like everyone’s story - is worth sharing.
But in light of this, I wanted to take a moment and highlight those who have never had those opportunities, people who chose or had to give up so much for others:
their children, parents, community. My mother pushed aside certain dreams for me, my incredible grandma/Abuela worked long crushing weeks to raise a family that was fed and clothed, committed to stopping the cycles of abuse that had existed in her family for generations. I grew up on military bases, sometimes in places that received foreign refugees: I know of many who have literally given their lives for their children, or worked as slaves for decades simply to allow them the opportunity for an education. On a less drastic note, there are so many people like me choosing to establish themselves in a place where they can best serve their loved ones and community.
Of course, I am not encouraging people not to pursue their dreams and instead adhere to a burdensome sense of obligation, or stay in a toxic situation. I hope that is obvious. I am working towards my dreams myself. But I am recognizing that even the ability to pursue those dreams is an incredible gift. And that people who chose to stay in one place, to be caregivers, to take less risks, to work steady jobs that can always put meals on the table, those people are equally strong and brave and - I believe - should be celebrated no less. That is why I wished to dedicate a video to it.

I grew up in a crime ridden ghetto. At the first opportunity I left and never returned. My family, immediate and extended, was so dysfunctional they saw it as abandonment. I don’t regret it one bit. My sibling did the same thing. Now we have stable happy lives.

I'm 25 and feel like my life is already over before it's even begun. This video crystalized a lot of what I've been thinking about for a long time. I CAN'T live this kind of life. Where other people find settling down comforting, I realize I find it suffocating and unbearable. I CAN'T put off my own life and dreams to care for others. Maybe it's selfish, but I finally realize that being a martryr will make me eventually resent who I sacrificed for, which finally made it clear that I NEVER want to be a mother. Ever. Maybe other people find genuine happiness in it. But my own mom has sacrificed so much for us and got so little in return and I can never ever put myself in that situation because of a family of my OWN making. I want to get out. I have to get out. Maybe this wasn't your goal, but thanks to your videos (a few have been recommended), I realize that this is exactly the kind of life I NEVER want to have. So in an odd but truly sincere way, thank you.

Each needs to know what will make their time on this earth the most beneficial. You seem to need to honor your wanderlust.
I can assure you, being age 60, your desires, tastes and needs change.
Generally, youth desires to sew wild oats, see the world, seek exciting things and challenges - all part of human development. As age increases your perspective changes and you realize…like Dorothy in the Wizard of Oz…There is no place like home. And please know, and as this video touches on, an overwhelming percentage of humans look back with some regrets, even in the most perfectly lived life, again it’s part of human development, not a sign of failure.
Some try to outrun their devils by seeking constant excitement and adventure - leaving home in the rearview. Others hide from their devils and stunt their personal growth by surrounding themselves with spouses and children to hide in and they never stray far from home.
Living this mortal coil is a crapshoot where any plan can turn on a dime. The point it seems is to grow, at whatever speed your self needs the growing, share your growth with others and know that mistakes will be made along the way.
Love yourself, Love others and do believe in God, for many reasons, least of which is the guidance from a being with knowledge unmeasured and…well…it certainly can’t hurt. Again, I am 60 years old and sorta just realized…Doh, I have a guardian angel. I simply cannot navigate this world successfully without the guidance of wise people and a heavenly host.
Be you, be strong, be fair, be joyful and be at peace…with all your might.….and, oh, the patience you will need along the way with yourself and others. ❤️

This young lady is a true artist who possesses a wisdom and insight far beyond her young age. What a delight it would be to be her friend, neighbor, or even casual acquaintance. Every video she creates is an opportunity to relax, put away daily cares for a few minutes, and try to absorb a little of her profoundly beautiful attitude and lifestyle.

I really needed to hear this, firstly because it's been a difficult week but as it turns out, also because of your beautiful message. As a mum of three boys who 'chose' to stay home for both practical economic reasons and reasons of caregiving, I sometimes fall into feeling that my unpaid work is invisible and unvalued and therefor so am I. 'Stay at home mom' should really be called 'live at work mom'.😉 Thank you for this lovely moment of recognition, it makes me feel seen. Sending my love and thanks to you and your own Mom for choosing to make a beautiful life a possibilty, for your family and all of us here.❤

2:20 Due respect, it *is* feasible for anybody! You can do anything you want, but not everything you want. Everything in life is a trade off. I have given up a life of roots and stability because I have chosen a nomadic life. I sometimes dream of living in one place, having a garden and a dog, and a network of friends that live nearby. But I’ve chosen to forgo those things, which is my choice. Everyone has that choice, but most people are not willing to pay the cost of living the life I do. I completely respect your decision to live in that lovely valley, but you or anyone else could live my life on the road. They’re both beautiful adventures, just very different. But, yes, it’s a choice.

    • @TheCottageFairy

We are all capable of so many things we often do not even dream of, we have so many choices in life 🤍 I’m simply celebrating the people who feel unable to do certain things for themselves due to other commitments. For example, I have a family member with a child with many severe health complications. The only way they can provide for them is by working in close vicinity of a hospital, where they need to visit often. I think they would not be able to live nomadic with a child who needs so much support and equipment to help them survive. I know they have given up many things for her, so it would not be feasible for them to live certain ways if they want to keep their child safe. By being a military child I have lived in places where I have witnessed people working as slaves in order to pay for their children’s education. They don’t have the options or human rights many of us enjoy. It is heartbreaking, and I wanted to share some of the stories that inspire me. Hope that helps clarify my intention. Regards

Just wanted to say how truly appreciative for you to celebrate the life of people who do not have the opportunity to live the dream or travel the world. Personally, as someone from the third world country, dreams of living simple and quiet life in cottage is almost impossible. I do not have the luxury to travel abroad as many do. Just by watching videos like this is my source of happiness to see how beautiful other countries can be. It sounds sad, but in reality we just have to live and accept and grateful with all else that we have now.

As a stay at home mom of 4, I sat down to have a little quiet time and escape the chaos surrounding me. I remembered a video of yours that came across my feed last year. It was of you quoting the velveteen rabbit and making the wool bunny. It was such a beautiful video, I wanted to see it again. I was so glad I found it. I was interrupted three times while trying to watch it, but it still quieted my mind. I wish I could come visit you and try your lilac tea when I need a quiet moment, but at least I can watch your videos and marvel at the beauty of nature around you. The peace and quiet you live in makes me want to cry. Thank you for sharing it.

For most of human history, people have spent their entire lives in the region they were born in - nomadic cultures were not the norm. We live in a strange age now where people move houses regularly, travel internationally, and (I know for a lot of young people) never really plant themselves anywhere long enough to develop roots within a community.
Steady living is a forgotten art 💞 Im really drawn to the stability of it. Thanks for sharing your beautiful thoughts and videos

I'm so happy I ran into this video. In the last few years, in all the spiritual groups I was a part of, pages that I followed, all of them talk about "leaving your 9-5 job". As if the job itself was the problem. I had a hectic schedule, worked nights and had no stability, and I finally have a 9-5 job now, which honestly makes me so happy. I agree with everything you said and it was very soothing to hear someone else say it for the first time in years. Thank you.

This makes me think of one of my favorite Peter Pan quotes, "There are many different kinds of bravery. There’s the bravery of thinking of others before oneself. Now, your father has never brandished a sword nor fired a pistol, thank heavens. But he has made many sacrifices for his family, and put away many dreams… .He put them in a drawer. And sometimes, late at night, we take them out and admire them. But it gets harder and harder to close the drawer… He always does. And that is why he is brave.” Appreciate your meditations!

My dreams were to create art. I had interests in many different media but mostly dance. Then I married a man who had three kids and all of the sudden my dreams had to shift. I am now a first grade teacher and while it is not the glamorous free spirited life I always imagined there is fulfillment, a stable paycheck, and I can make art as an outlet. I have a great responsibility to raise these kids and teach others. I used to feel suffocated by it but God has given me the strength to find joy in those responsibilities. It has been a winding path of dying to my selfishness.

So true! I used to feel almost panicked (knot in the stomach, couldn't sleep at night) at the thought that I wasn't traveling the world and (as our current culture puts it) "doing something" with my life. I'm also a creative person with a tendency to find schedules/calendars to be scary confining things. So for a long time I listened to those opinions. But lately I have found an increasing sense of relief, peace and accomplishment from learning to stay put and WORK on my interests and goals. I don't worry about trying to be interesting any more. I focus on growing, being healthy and being a positive influence on the people in my life. Thank you for sharing this very important perspective!

the story told by the care taker fits the theme perfectly. your boyfriend's work, being a passion and not just a job underlines everything about the subject matter. there's no need to elaborate here...the weeds growing around your property seem to meld well with the garden. And unless the weeds are a detriment to the crops, they add to the tapestry. Your husband...i mean your boyfriend... is rooted and grounded in every possible way, while you're like the wild flower that springs unexpectedly. isn't that what nature teaches us? ; each of us has a role to play, along with dependence and responsibility to each others' freedom.

We can all see the world from our experience, and yes we all have limitations because each person has limits to their knowledge. What is important is to be open and to listen, not to limit yourself or others. I have learnt so much from others, I have broadened my life experience greatly by not having fixed ideas or precepts. I also love the expanding thought process in reading philosophy, it has taught me a lot as well. Flexibility of thought makes for a happier life, you are not fixed in your thought patterns or expectations.

Thank you Paola! This was such a sweet and much needed message. I am currently 26 years old and for quite a few years I had dreams of traveling and being a nomad. Sometimes I feel quite jealous of people who can live that lifestyle so freely. But this past year, Ive learned to embrace just staying home and taking care of my mom. It's just me and her and she's getting older so it's important for me to stay home and help her out in the best way that I can. I'm working an office job and teaching art to kids. I'm hoping to teach full time in the near future. When I graduated college in 2017, I had high expectations of how I wanted my life to be like by now, but life takes you in different directions. As we get older, we learn to embrace life, and accept where it leads you. I am thankful that I am with my mom. Although I sometimes get frustrated, I have learned to be patient and understanding. Thank you for reminding me to celebrate the beauty of living a steady life and that its okay if some of my dreams at the moment have been sacrificed. I do not regret it at all. Those dreams still remain. And I know that no matter what age I am, even if I'm 75, I can still pursue my dreams!
    All the best!

Paola, once again this is a beautiful and insightful video complemented with the photography skills of your brother. For me, home is where everything feels right, good, and safe; and there are times we might have to work hard to make that happen. There may be struggles along our journey of life but I believe contentment and happiness are available to every one of us in numerous and different situations. For me personally it is an unconditional family relationship, the wonders of nature, and the incredible love and devotion of my golden retriever. xx

She's isn't. Her mom is Puerto Rican and Puerto Ricans are American citizens and Puerto Rico is a US territory. I love her channel, but don't understand why always she refers to her mom as an immigrant and says she came from another country. The US Congress doesn't properly respond to crises in Puerto Rico (hurricane Marie, for example) and most Americans don't even know folks there are Americans. This is why Puerto Rico has been trying to become a US state for the past decade. But the first step is to make sure everyone knows Puerto Ricans are Americans, not foreigners. Still moving to the mainland can be a difficult transition, especially since all of the US island territories have drastically higher poverty rates than folks on the mainland. I don't doubt her mother's parents had to work really hard to get their daughter to the mainland and try to provide her opportunities, especially since there aren't as many on Puerto Rico.

The Palestinian people would love to have the opportunity to stay in their land. I have lived here this past year and It´s been sad to see the environmental Occupation and how they have to turn to refugees. Although migrating can bring us as individual many benefits, it´s sad that it´s without a choice and based on injustice. Thank you for this video it´s beautiful. My husband and I just bought the home we will retire in. The area is beautiful, and the home is cozy and surrounded by nature. We have 5 more years to commit to our jobs working in our school district. I’m a teacher, and he is an administrator. We come to this home in Arkansas at Thanksgiving break, part of Christmas break, Spring Break and a lot in the summer. I want my life in our new home to begin now, but alas we have to commit 5 more years to our jobs in Texas to financially be ready to make this move permanently.

I have learned that if you value and take care of the nature around you, be that wild land, trees and wildlife or your own little patch, your own roots and soul become stronger and you grow in harmony and adapt to a new place just like the trees and plants you mentioned. I get so much pleasure from watching the birds, squirrels, hedgehogs and toads and seeing the beauty in each and every bloom. You have made me deepen this connection over the past year and I am so grateful to you for this. You are a kindred spirit in the land, God bless you.

I personally find, this is such a strong message. There is no right way to live, even if many like to write that again and again under such videos. Every person is different and has their own dreams and drives. What is right for one, is for the other rather unpleasant.
In my circle of friends, for example, I only have people who love traveling and for whom quarantine was hell, while I love my home and nothing had really changed for me. But we all still love each other the way we are. One has found fulfillment in working in the lab and helping people in his own way and sacrifices a lot of time for it. While I am currently completely satisfied with my part-time job and minimalist life, where I can be outdoors in nature a lot. But all this can change again.
So many lives and so many ways to live :).

My grandparents have lived in the same rural town their entire lives. They grew up there, raised children, had many different jobs, lifelong friends, and retired to live out their days in the same little town. It always seemed so idyllic to me, a city kid with a vast imagination. They knew the names of the librarians and grocery clerks, and know the land and industries well. I cherish everything they taught me about slow and purposeful living and finding joy in every little thing.

Thank you for another thoughtful, beautiful video 🙏 As I grew up around lots of “green things” but have been living in the desert for some time now, it was a joy to watch this video and to see and recognize familiar and beloved flowers and plants 😍 Looking at your marvelous cottage surroundings, I don’t see “weeds”…instead I see many wonderful plant relatives who have through the ages lived with us and offered support of various kinds…take the dandelion reviled in most lawns, but…it’s beneficial to human digestion, containing substances that support the gallbladder…and the action of its roots make bound minerals in the earth accessible to its surrounding plant neighbors, and more nutrients in the soil is good for plants and humans alike 💞 All of which you probably already know, with your obvious delight and appreciation for plants 😊
I’m an “Air Force brat” and can relate to several things you share…in this video and others around finding, creating, and appreciating “home.” Thank you, again, for your care-ful, beautiful, wise envisioning of your space…and life in general 💚

It seems like more and more people think that 9-5 jobs are not of this age, freedom restrictive and unenjoyable.
but if you ask me, your focus should first and foremost be on finding the joy in where you are rather than always seeking joy somewhere else. It's a beautiful thing to commit to something or someone for so long.

It's refreshing you are not like the typical youtuber taking a camera and throwing it all over their faces, posing, pouting, recording every minute of their lives, that's not talent, those are baseless, useless videos. I am older than you And find that the young generation is under heavy pressure of society manifesting through social media and making them believe they have to be very special, different, fulfilling any dream they have, avoiding being average... Because in todays world anything must be possible. Thats why there Is no excuse to live ordinary life, no excuse not to fill on any dream. I'm an accounting/finance double major in college. I work 2-3 jobs a semester, but still manage to keep a 4.0 (so far). Somewhere in the back of my mind, I can feel myself breaking down. I know I can't work in this industry for too long; my mind feels like it's beginning to unravel, and that I'm going to spin into chaos if I keep being the person I am. It's misery to push oneself so hard and to never be enough.
Your videos have shown me that a quieter life may suit my mental needs in the long run. I'm not sure how long I'll last before I'm forced to choose a new path, but I feel peace about that possibility now.
