2023 Hot Rod Power Tour Day 3! Problems begin! Has Austin been cloned?!

- Sorry for the super late upload of the Hot Rod Power Tour Day 3 video folks, our internet has been horrible the last few days of the HRPT! Day 3 started off just like every other day, positive energy, an up beat intro... then it went sideways from there as you'll quickly see! So much for a problem free Power Tour!
On tour with us we have the trusty rusty 1979 AMC Spirit AMX, 304 V8 powered and recently upgraded with a T5 transmission for better highway manners. Also on tour with us is Kerry with his 1967 Pontiac GTO which we had recently rescued and revived from purgatory about a year and a half ago.
Today we are setting off from Columbia South Carolina headed towards Rockingham Raceway, and totally definitely not planning to backtrack and possibly purchase a car "along the way"! Well any plans and time tables we HAD went out the window instantly anyway! Here we go, enjoy folks!
Austin, I gotta say that AMX sure sounds good when you`re running though the gears.
It does doesn't it?! For a lil unappreciated 304 she's got a good note to her! Very excited to see what the new motor sounds like too 😀

Now THAT is some high praise! We definitely dig the sounds it makes for sure, going to be interesting to see how the NEW motor sounds compared to this one! 🤔
Saw this before you took it down for repair. As far as the choice of engines; as much as I would like to see a hellcat swap, I think the better choice is the 360. You all ready have the motor. I would recomend running a tremix 5 speed. The t5 will not hold up. Ask me how I know.
I've really been waffling back and forth about what would be the "better" way to build it. The Hellcat swap WOULD be awesome but... good lord expensive. The 360 with a supercharger would be a whole lot easier and less expensive with similar power levels. Plus... I think it would honestly sound better.

And DEFINITELY need to put a Tremec behind it!

I tried to talk him into it but he's got a lot of other life responsibilities that keep him from doing this stuff. Maybe some day I'll convince him though 😉

Kei Trucks have a little secret. 5th gear is locked out to import them legally. Usually you will see the shifting knob #5 ground off. They will do 70+mph in 5th gear...

Non Ethanol fuel fixed my vapor issue.. my car never stalled at stop light etc after I started using it.
That AMX has such a nice exhaust note. Music to my ears! You really need to fix the gauges, even if it`s just the fuel, oil, and temp. Wow, @38:07 you passed a gas station, $2.959/ gallon. Here in York Pa it`s $3.669/gallon for the same gas. Democrats love their taxes here. I want to move🤣
The fuel prices in this country make NO sense we were all over the south and the prices were ALL over the place. Premium fluctuated like almost a dollar. Not sure how many democrats control the deep south states and their gas taxes 🤔
Shoulda opened the sunroof Austin! No fun in having a sunroof if you don't use it! I know i know, there is the concern about it falling out... but it won't!
It was tempting a few times especially at night the weather was excellent! Unfortunately I didn't bring the glass holder with me and would loose my dang mind if I damaged this one. Windows down for 1600+ miles though!
@@LucoreAuto it pops up, that's what I would have done. I use my sunroof all the time. I hate convertibles, but sunroof and ttops are awesome
Hemi is a great engine but an AMC with a supercharger would be sweet!

Good! That's what they are built for! It always bugs me when folks buy one then sell it years later with barely any miles on it.
The 360 would be an "easier" build to complete and get going. The Hermi powered beast would be a "slightly" more difficult project that would take a long while to complete due to the fabrication that would have to happen. I think it comes down to shop time availability. Doing the Hemi swap is going to tie up the bay and lift for an extended period of time. I think the answer comes down to what is Rich willing sacrifice. I think the Hemi swap would be a viewer draw, particularly when you get closer to completion and start shredding tires.

Oh THIS one is staying as is, well it's getting the new engine swapped in but it's not going "pretty". But we have 2 others of these '79 AMXs that we have plans for 😉

"It sounds so good..." no, it sounds like Flowmasters. Yeah.. I've seen enough Roadkill to know when it's transmission fluid leaking and trying to catch the car on fire... I called it immediately. "WO!" POT FARM!!!!!!!! though honestly it's probably a CBD farm, there's lots of those in what used to be tobacco country, they grow better and make more money per plant on top of being better for you.
AMC powered by AMC is far more interesting than Hellcrate/Hellcat or LS swap.. they've been overdone to death already... hell someone Hellcat swapped a Prius! Personally I'm really into the idea of just a really big like 7L AMC all motor with a wicked cam and Cherrybomb Glasspacks that just makes all the right noises, maybe put stack injection EFI on it for drivability and all the intake noise. You know that'd be cool! (besides you don't need Hellcat power in something that short, and those modern engines are just harsh sounding.. they don't sound good no matter what you do to them)
Someone tell Kerry, the GTX only had two engines available.. the base engine was the 440, the only option was the 426 Hemi, and then you could pick compression and manual or auto.

Unfortunately it's hard to get good audio in that car especially with the windows down. And without windows down fat guy has a heat stroke. Sorry if it's unwatchable!
My remote control has a volume button with an ^ pointing to the north , I push that ^ until i can hear Austin it's a pretty cool feature 😁
