I’ve just started working weekends on a small dairy milking 46 up in Shetland milking in the old byre and it’s hard work nothing automated and I think it’s good learning like that and then move up to a parlour learning the old ways first.

I cannot say I am a fan of rear discharge spreaders. I have found them tricky to judge the application rate. Probably because I am old fashioned and like to see the muck fly out the side where you see the result. It's different with slurry because it's a liquid and as such the flow is more constant. The West and Shelbourne Reynolds PowerSpread I think are better. However, each to his own. Another fine and well put together video young man!

Marking out a straight line using the mirror. Common sense too possibly.
Great video again. Old spreader does a tidy job.

60s driving my dads fordson major with no cab on in them days summer and winter, using a bale fork loading small bales on and off trailer through a forking hole, mucking out cow barns with brush, shovel and barrow then unload barrow over a wall into midden when that was full hand balling it into a atkinson spreader as we had no loader but it kept you fit.

    Hello,
I totally agree, it's a pitty some basic farming skills aren't used anymore. The farming "job" has changed so much, for the better mostly but thinking back at the good old hard working people on farms I'm not so sure it's all so much better now. Easier on the body but so much more complicated for the mind.
Cutting too high grass/ weeds with a sickle was a quiet rewarding job when you did it well.
    Cheers from Belgium.

Its not just skills that the young farmers are missing out on, how about "hard" work? Unloading 10 ton of fertilizer from the back of a lorry in 1cwt (112lb or 8 stone) bags, carrying 2cwt (224lb or 16 stone) bags of grain up the granary steps when harvesting. Working a front loader all day with no powered steering, and carrying four bales of hay or straw at the same time. Okay they were smaller bales then but it was still hard work, the list is endless. Another great video, thank you for sharing.👍

As someone who was at school in the 90s and left 2002, I think I'm kinda on the boarder between still being old school with a hit of tech?!? To be honest, some of the basic stuff like using a shovel or brush skills are lost 😂😂

Driving underpowered 2 wheel drive tractor's on steep ground. Not wanting to touch your brakes or maybe having to reverse down a hill or if she did take of down a hill hitting the throttle to gain traction again. And leaving the doors open ready to jump out if there's no landing area at the bottom LOL.
