    Now all we need is one hundred thousand more for the earth works to defend Vicksburg. Well done sir.
    For an experimental archeology project it would be really interesting if we could find a large plot of land and make a section of earthworks fortifications like they did in the civil war, then shoot cannon and muskets with live ammo at them at various distances and see what effect the ammo would have on these fortifications. We might be surprised what we find in the testing results as it will give us a better understanding on why the various sieges of cities in the south were fought they way they were.
    Just a thought.

    Man, with how big a fit my neighbors pitched over our friend parking his trailer in our driveway for a couple hours, I bet if I built a couple of these they'd completely lose their minds.

    I have no idea why this was suggested to me, but this was a well done video. Good mix of history, detail and brevity. Really enjoyed it.

    If anyone is curious, the name translates as Horse of the Frisians, referencing a region in the Netherlands which had no cavalry since the terrain was very soggy. So these were invented as a way to negate the advantage of their enemies' cavalry charge. Since at the time cavalry was used to counter other cavalry, this technique was given its name in irony by the French, who were great aficionados of cavalry and were thus insulted by mere infantry holding them off using this dirty trick.

    You could use latillas, round poles 1 1/2" x 8'. At least in New Mexico we can get them. They are about $8 for 8' pole. More expensive, but easier.

    a spud is a mediavl english word for a shortish knife, hence the potatoe is called a spud in english slang becuase of the type of knife that is commonly used, the name of the knife came to be transferred to the vegetable , a common happening ie in England a mouse in mediaval times was called a 'moggy' a cat was a 'moggy chaser' nowadays a cat is often called just a moggy, I have NEVER heard anyone call a mouse a moggy :) just so's you know :)

    How do you get a rank in reenactment??

    • @CompanyD2ndUSSS
      @CompanyD2ndUSSS  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It varies quite a bit. Sometimes it's based on experience or yearly elections. Rank can also really depend on unit size. A unit with only 6 people doesn't need a captain, 2 lieutenants, 1st Sgt, 2nd Sgt, and 2 corporals--You'd have no privates. A shortened version of how our unit issues rank includes experience, completeness of high quality impression, attendance, historical and safety examinations, leadership qualities, and dedication to reenacting, improvement, and research. We also don't add any ranks unless we have the number of soldiers to justify it. I hope that helps. Each unit is different.

    • @charlesehmke8403
      @charlesehmke8403 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@CompanyD2ndUSSS The numbers in my unit varies from year to year. While I hold the rank of 1st lieutenant, we currently have less than 6 regular guys. So for the time being, we're all privates.

    It is not french. The proper name is in Dutch “Friese ruiter “

    • @timbickerdike7112
      @timbickerdike7112 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi ... the name might be French but who knows where it was first created. If you have references for it being the Netherlands I'd love to see.

    • @lukesshootingfun9193
      @lukesshootingfun9193 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I was wrong . It’s actually spanish. It’s first used late 1500’ In the 80 years war. To prevent that dutch rebels retake the citty of Groningen. Which is in the netherlands. The region is called Friesland.
