Manchester United would like a new goalkeeper. David de Gea, although the current Premier League Golden Glove holder, is not the right fit for an Erik ten Hag United side. They want a keeper that is good with their feet.
There are many goalkeepers that are good with their feet these days, so why specifically do the Red Devils need Andre Onana?
    JJ Bull explains.

As someone who watched Onana for years at Ajax, he is amazing. When he peaks, he can literally do anything. Shot stopping, pass, cross-pass, solid in the air, AMAZING reflexes, coaches defense, quick thinker, fast (both in reflexes and in sweeping) solid throws, and has the charisma and calmness to boot. The only thing I can think of is penalty stopping, unsure how great he is at that. But Onana due his football capabilities rather than just goalkeeping, is definitely in the top5 goalkeepers.

    2) Onana was banned from playing for 12 months by UEFA after testing positive for Furosemide, a banned substance.

DDG is not just bad with his feet, he also happens to make howlers at important crucial matches fairly consistently. Chelsea FA Cup semis, top four crunch matches against Arsenal (twice) 2019, 2021, Barcelona UCL knockout in 19, plus various ones that ruin momentum against Watford, Spurs and Everton. Additional to this, he doesn't dominate his box, and so he doesn't stop chances before they even form, but also by not coming and claiming the ball early, the team never gets the chance to counter-attack - which is what GKs like Schmeichel used to do - grab the ball in the air at the 6-yard box, run to the edge of the pen box, and throw it and launch a counter-attack. Man Utd - a traditional counter-attacking team without a counter-attacking keeper.

    • @chicofoxo

What I mean is, fine if you're no Onana who starts counter-attacks with your feet, but you have hands, and you can still do a bit of that. 10+ years and no improvement on that part.

Slightly disagree that De Gea is the only one to blame for Brentford scoring from that throw-in. No, he shouldn't have made that pass when he did, but there is a much larger issue for us, in my opinion. We currently do not have midfielders who are press resistant when in possession, meaning it is very difficult for our MFs to either find options to pass to, or for them to break past a press like a Frenkie De Jong/Modric would. Next step for us is building a midfield that is equipped to deal with pressing.

He was banned for inadvertently taking a prohibited substance. Ajax supported him whilst suspended and wanted to resign him to a longer contract after he served his suspension. However he declined to resign even after the support Ajax had shown him and was thus a free agent over the summer when inter signed him. Logically Ajax benched him because of this, but when they were forced to play him anyway because of injuries to other goalkeepers he wasn't focused, played really bad and also said that he didn't care what the fans thought about him when he was playing that poorly.

The only issue is, Onana has a bit of an attitude problem. Specifically he fell out with Ten Hag at the end of his time at Ajax, and he also got send away from his national team because he didn't like the system the manager wanted to play. Not a great trait to have for a team in transition and a little bit prone to changing managers.

Massive upgrade on De Gea for sure, so I would be very happy with him. But IMO Diogo Costa would be a much better signing. Costa may be a slightly worse sweeper, but he is as good as Onana at playing out from the back, whilst being much better than him at claiming crosses and saving penalties. Most importantly though, he is almost 4 years younger than Onana. Seems like both would cost around 50m, so its a no brainer to go for Costa instead IMO.

    • @MrWill1729

I think there's essentially two ways to prevent the opponent from scoring. proactive and passive. Proactive is when you retain possession, limiting the time opponents can have the ball, and we all know you can't score without the ball. Less possession = fewer chances to score.
Then there's passive, where you place your bets on your defence to make tackles/block shots and the keeper to save shots that are on target.
Logically, the proactive approach is way more sustainable. And I think you already know which category de gea belongs to without me spelling it out.
