I made my first heel in 15 years and am super excited! nobody gets it in my family but trust me, I'm clicking my heels in joy tonight!

    GSRs are by far the most understandable heel method I've been able to find. I'm currently working on my first pair of socks and it's so much easier than I expected. Your pattern is fantastically written, and these video explanations are a godsend. Thanks a bunch!

    Staci, you are a life saver because I knew that I had watched your tutorial before but it was a little while ago. I found it this afternoon and downloaded it and have done the toe ready to finish it tomorrow. Thank you for all you do with the tutorials, they are very helpful and enjoyable to watch and you do put a lot of work into them. Someone told me that the toe up socks was very American and not the way we do it in New Zealand so do cuff down because we have more patterns for them. I did one and decided that toe up will be next I think it might not be as slow. Thanks again.

    I did it.!!! I made a sock and after dinner, I will start the other one. I am so proud of what I have done. Thank you Staci, I am one of those people who don't like picking up stitches. I do like the DK as well because sock yarn is like knitting with cotton and it takes so long. Nevermind, I have done it and the GSR heel is not hard as long as you concentrate. Sorry for going on. Thank you again.

    OnaQuest forFiber - this pattern is written for DK/Sport weight yarn. Using a different weight of yarn would change the gauge, and make it necessary to follow an entirely different pattern. In my sock tutorials, I teach you the different techniques for different styles of socks, with the idea that you will take those skills and apply them to all kinds of sock patterns, in all different weights of yarn.

      +VeryPink Knits Love your videos! I am a total beginner to knitting and crochet & have wanted to learn about knitting socks. Between this and one other of your tutorials, (the 2 at a time one) I am inspired to give this a try! (...time to move on past my many 4" squares and skinny scarves!) The most interesting aspect of this technique is that the toe & heel shapes seem be formed perpendicular to the other method. Fascinating! And, I've learned so many great tips on knitting in general by your commentary. Thank you so much!

    Staci, thank you so much for your tutorials. I am teaching myself to knit and your tutorials have been a fantastic help. I have my first pair of socks on the needles, after purchasing your pattern for two at a time, toe up last week. The wraps were hard in my Berroco Blackstone Tweed (but the tweed is hiding some wonky knitting! And, these will be quite warm next winter), so I am thinking I will get this pattern for the heel and future socks.

    Staci!!! Thanks so much I bought this pattern and I have knitted the first (first ever!) pair of socks (toddler.) It was so fast! Since I have made several mitts, tip-less gloves, and gloves in magic loop I was easily able to knit these using the same. I am so excited about this way of knitting socks. My husband has very wide feet and I am confident that I can make him socks with this method. Thanks again!

    I crochet tiny flowers as markers I use up all of my leftover yarn this way. I got the idea when I was knitting at the Dr. office I had some I had made for making ponytail holders in my bag and no stitch markers that I usually use. It just hit me to use one on the knitting needle. I started making flowers I could tie on. I leave them on baby booties for girls now as a decoration.

    Wow! Staci, your sock pattern w/GSR's is awesome! This is my 2nd attempt at toe-up socks, the first pattern was bewildering between trying magic loop for the 1st time & I have no idea what kind of toe method, ugh. but here I am now, wearing my first sock from your pattern, admiring the terrific fit and the GSR's. This is very interesting, I'm knitting short rows on socks in that way, because it is easier than w&t heel, but I learned this type to knit with 2 rounds between the first and the second half of the heel.
    Very interesting to see how it could work without that two transition rounds.
    And um, I'm from Germany, here it is called the "double stitch heel" (because it looks like 2 stitches than one)

    • @machomamma
      @machomamma 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I've watched a couple of other TH-cam videos that talk about inserting two rows in the middle of the heel. One of them states emphatically that you cannot "stack" GSRs. Nevertheless, Staci's pattern seems to work.

    • @sandyscrap
      @sandyscrap ปีที่แล้ว

      I‘m german and was taught to do 3 rounds over all needles in between both parts of the heel. If I don‘t do this the socks are too tight. I actually prefer a shadow wrap heel as there are less holes in the heel that way.

    Awesome! I have to say that I've only tried make one pair of toe-up socks doing a traditional gusset heel. While the end result fit nicely I found the process to be a bit of a pain, especially since I first tried doing 2-at-a-time. It was my first 2-at-a-time attempt as well. I found the magic loop method to be way too fiddly; more so than DPNsl. I wound up abandoning the 2-at-a-time and switched to doing 1 at a time with DPNs. Doing a GSR version looks a lot more pleasant, from a toe and heel construction point of view. So I just might try making a toe-up version the next pair I make. Thanks Staci!

    I am so excited! yay a toe I love but didn't know how to do. just bought pattern added to queue on Ravelry. need to get a scale as each of my dk's from a indie dyer out of Greece has a different yardage but same weight??? gonna double check weight before splitting off and caking 2 separate, 1 for each sock! AND after socktober happened couldn't find 0-3 us circs or dpns to save my life! all on back order everywhere it seemed. mine are due to arrive any day now :) no idea where mine walked off to I suspect a daughter may have walked off with em! ;) just read through pattern, the video helps immensely. I knit laying flat left sided, odd I know, back surgeries stink! no sitting for me, so having a bit of help visually, as pain protocol also stinks, helps folks just like me do what we love! I'd hug you if I could! I've been scouring everywhere asking all my friends for something like this, none of them do this. all about various vanilla sock patterns and FKL heel *Ack*. the slightly heavier weight will be perfect for winter here, cold feet means more pain AND that stretchy bind off will be great when I don't do as I should *it happens, I'm a mom and nana it's hat we do sometimes* and my right leg especially, my foot too, begins to swell! I sooo want to cast on NOW! Lol :)

    I have a pattern for toe-up socks and have knitted the first sock, not with great success because the W&T was only explained for the knit side and not the purl side, so I had to wing it, and the result was OK, but not really good because of a distortion and a missed wrap. My question is: Can I substitute GSR for W&T wherever it appears in the pattern? It seems like a much easier way to go. Thank you.

    What a nice giveaway as a wheelchair patient, it has become an addictive hobby, but sometimes too badly expensive if it would be a pleasant surprise to have it in my possession, and do not extend so long with this kind of needles, this seems so convenient if you can take the thread yourself that you need. Super nice and thumbs like the other. I also learn a lot through the videos as I'm self-study and thank you for making these videos otherwise I would never have been able to do that. to start with ,🌹🌹🌹

    I just purchased this pattern and am using the magic loop method. At 21:23 in the video, you slipped the first stitch in the first row right after removing the provisional cast-on. Can you explain the reason for doing so? The pattern simply says begin knitting in the round at the point. Thank you! This is my first sock project and it's been a lot of fun so far.

      +Rachel Tong - please follow the pattern for the most accurate row-by-row instructions. I demonstrate the techniques in the video, and there are a couple of rows where the first stitch is slipped, but I may have inadvertently slipped a stitch that isn't part of the pattern.

    Staci, I've knitted 2 pairs of these socks. Love them. However, I'm doing something that causes my stitches at the heel/instep area to stretch (where the little hole would be). The stitches here appear tortured. I can close up the hole, but the stretched stitches remain. What do you think?? This makes the otherwise beautiful socks not gift-worthy. Would appreciate your thoughts.

    • @verypinkknits
      @verypinkknits  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Joanne Buczynski - I'm guessing that you're taking about the stitches where we use the GSR? You have to be really careful...these stitches hang out on the needle for several rows, and there is danger of them getting stretched out, especially as you get further out to the stitches on the edges. So, that's the trick - make sure you're not pulling on these stitches while you're working the other rows. I find that I have to watch the pinkie of my right hand, because the way I hold the needle with that finger can cause stress on those stitches.

    • @joannebuczynski4091

My husband says I'm being too fussy about this, and I think, for once, he may be right. So, thanks for your help. I will be very careful with my next pair - the GSR lace socks.

    Love your tutorials! Do you have suggestions for an easy toe up sock pattern(s) for knee high socks (children through adult sizes), and how much yarn it will take. Most of the sock patterns use a small amount of yarn and is used until you run out. I don't really care much for short socks, & I'd like to make my granddaughter (5yrs) as well as myself knee socks to wear w/our rain boots (tall shaft). Is there any special math to figure it out? Hi Staci. I've bought your pattern and it looks great. Question though: Is it possible to tweak the sock pattern for a person with large legs? I'm new to making socks but they seem to all be tubes where the leg and foot fit into the same width tube. If someone has thick legs or ankles compared to the foot size, someone who really does need tailor fit socks, then can the pattern be tweaked for that? I'm not sure how to increase without wrecking the pattern/s. Thank you in advance. x

    • @verypinkknits
      @verypinkknits  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      You an just use a larger needle size to fit a wider foot/leg. Or you can very gradually add Make 1 increase stitches to socks like these (that don't have a complicated stitch pattern). I can't really tell you how often to increase, it will kind of take some experimentation on your part to find what fits you best.

      fierceblossoming - the slipped stitch instruction is included in the pattern. I like to slip that stitch because when you begin knitting in the round, you aren't exactly joined in the round yet with the front and back stitches. Slipping that stitch creates less of a gap to fill between the end and the beginning of the round.

    Hi, another great video. You could make a video on how to make a video! Your's are always so clear and easy to understand. I did have a quick question. At the point you split the stitches that were on one needle and put them on two, and put the stitches that were split on two back on one, why didn't you just knit the heel with the stitches that were already on two needles? This is probably one of those slap your forehead moments when the answer is obvious but it just seemed an unnecessary step. Thanks again for all your help videos. DJ

    VeryPink Knits i'm hoping you still answer this video. So I would love to use sock weight yarn and use the German short row and even your crochet cast on method, I have done a gauge for the sock weight yarn and know how many stitches per inch. I'm just wondering with that knowledge, how to calculate the amount of stitches I would need to cast on for that yarn.....is the first "cast on" amount of stitches meant to go across the top edge of all five toes or just from the big toe to about the fourth toe.? Or should I just not use this German short row, and cast on method, for sock weight yarn? Thank you for all your amazing tutorials.

      Yes, I'm always active on my channel, and available to answer questions. From my FAQ: My sock patterns and tutorials are designed to teach the skills and techniques you need to knit that item using the techniques specified. Once you've finished a tutorial, you have what you need to know to move on to all kinds of similar patterns, available in all yarn weights. Just do an advanced search on Ravelry for the specifics - toe-up, two at-a-time, cuff-down, etc. I'm sorry - changing the gauge in a pattern requires an entirely new pattern. Sock patterns can't be easily modified.

    Hi Stacy, Yes! you are very right! That was MY FAULT about the GSR you do have both the purl side and the knit side for doing those DS. I was just so used to reading a very long description from other patterns, that I didn't expect it to be so short. Now I can see that your directions are so easy it didn't need more than just one short sentence. The only problem I am now having with the GSR is that when I went to pick them up it is very hard to get them loose enough to get my needle through. When you are pulling up the slipped stitch, it doesn't pull up far enough. Does this mean I should be doing a looser stitch somehow in the row below??

    • @verypinkknits
      @verypinkknits  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      You can see in the video that the GSR is a "double" stitch on the needle, nothing that should be difficult to pickup. So if you're modifying a pattern that calls for turkish cast on (which I HATE doing in dpns) does it make sense to cast on half the number of foot-width sitches, then gsr until you have the correct "cast on" number of the toe? That's how I'm thinking it would make sense but I want to make sure my logic is sound.... this looks sooo much better than other toe-up cast ons to me and looks way easier too!!

    • @verypinkknits
      @verypinkknits  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I believe the Turkish CO starts you off in a different part of the sock (at the tip of the toe), so it is not an easy conversion to go from turkish to this CO.

    When you show the pink completed sock, your stitches look different. They are like lines of twill and straight columns. I get the same thing when I'm knitting socks, and I was wondering if you knew why. In know that it is just normal knitting, but is it due to tension maybe? Or the twist of the yarn?

    • @verypinkknits

    Perhaps another viewer/commenter could answer my question. I am a new knitter and had purchased this pattern on ETSY. I have a size chart(from online) which shows 7 yarn sizes, and under both size 3 and 4 yarn i see listed "worsted", as well as "light/DK" under 3 and "Afghan/Aran" under size 4. In the video above when she calls for scrap worsted to be used for the crochet chain - Which worsted should i be using? Can I assume I should use the worsted one size above the working yarn for the sock? In other words - for sport weight yarn (size 2) should I use the size 3 worsted - then for DK sock yarn (size 3) should I use the size 4 (afghan/aran) worsted? And how tight should I be pulling the loops in the crochet chain? I've been using my landlady's leftovers for practice so I havent been too concerned about using the right size yarns as opposed to getting the stitching positions correct (sometimes I end up loosing a stitch or adding an extra stitch - practice is helping correct these mistakes) It seems that the tighter one might make the crochet loops it would make the crochet "spine" threads closer or father apart - changing how far apart the stitch loops over the needle are. Can anyone provide some insight for me. I greatly appreciate anyone taking the time to provide their thoughts. Thank you.

      If you are working from the pattern and you have questions, feel free to email me directly at staci@verypink.com. That said, here is my video on correcting gaps in socks: th-cam.com/video/uS8xRMvLzfg/w-d-xo.html

    Thank you, that's a really good idea putting those yarn tags.

    Hi, Staci. I picked up this pattern on Ravelry and learning the German short rows with a dk yarn. I'm new to sock knitting. This is like my 3rd pair. I have a request. Could you make an additional pattern exactly like this but with red heart yarn the one that is a little bigger than the sport weight or fingering weight with this German short row heel and toe? I'm hoping you can add the new pattern for like an extra $5 for people that have already purchased the reg pattern.

      KnitandCrochetHeaven - thanks for the suggestion, I'll put some thought into that!
