  • The economic crisis has resulted in many Americans unable to provide adequate amounts of nutritious food to their families. According to a survey by Feeding America, demand at food banks across the country increased by 30% in 2008. Some non-profit organizations that offer food assistance are also reporting a sharp increase in demand, especially from middle-class professionals who have lost their jobs. Steve Mort reports for VOA.

Classic American comments on this. Everyone get stuffed - I'm out for myself. Great society.

@marmite400 I'm not positive, but I think the organization relies mostly on donations. For the money that they have, I think it was more practical to buy less fresh food to get more food to feed more people.

I'm sorry but having 4 small kids in a row is really stupid these days. The mother acts like she is shocked because four small kids are hungry every ten minutes. Well duh. You need birth control.

Cindy Johnson Even with a good economy it isn't smart for people to have large families unless you are a millionaire.

That's totally false. These people are just too lazy to cook. I cook fresh food everyday. I go to the store once a week, buy my produce and it will last that week and longer. So fresh food is viable.

chechnya So true. I'm Asian and we not only cook meals everyday but we can stretch a low budget meal. Meat is used sparingly. It is not the main meal but added to a dish to make it tasty. . It is cut small and stir-fried with lots of vegetables and seasoned. Rice is served with it. It is delicious, healthy and go a long way. Asians don't have problems with obesity because dairy products, processed food, preserved meats, sodas, cookies, cakes are hardly ever eaten.

@1XMarksSpot Why aren't the organisation who are providing her free food with any fresh? They have money.

Alot of what food banks / Pantry's get is what grocery stores have left over and give them and donations from people or other organizations . I'm sure some of it is fresh but food banks them selves don't have alot of $.
They wouldn't be able to keep their doors open if they were depending solely on what they have with out donations.

I just looked at this video again after 2 years
there is not one single skinny person in the whole video
all of these people need to be on FOOD RESTRICTION not food stamps
get a load of the broad at 1:13 she is wider than the cart she is pushing.
some of these people are popping out of their designer jeans.

it's so sad that those with good paying jobs NEVER thought of stocking up FOR Emergencies when good Salaries were there. all it would have taken is ONE whole paycheck to stock up with 1000 LBS and could last for a year with added veggies and Meat. we in the Western world want everything right away like a Flat Screen in every room and a Cell in every hand but NEVER think of losing our jobs suddenly or a lifelong injury. EVERYONE OF THOSE WHO DID HAVE GOOD PAYING JOBS SHOULD GO ONTO ANY PREPPING SITE AND SEE WHAT THEY COULD HAVE DONE "THEN" !!!

That is very unkind and unsensitive. Get out there and HELP? Talk is cheap And many on very low incomes cannot do this, You are out of touch with the hard reality many endure

PPl who are hungry have bad diets such as too much bread (as a filler) bologna, lots of starches, which makes u fat. Fresh food is not viable. It doesn't last long.

you just can't keep up the same life style in a down economy and expect anyone to feel sorry beacuse you can not make your payments. Get rid of your gas guzzeling car return the giant flat screen TV you are making payments on and make do. Half the people in this vid need to be on a diet. Going hungery for a little while would be a good thing.

I understand that this lady had a full time job when she had 4 children but I still think in today's society, 4 kids is too many whether you're full time employed making a good salary. Think about the environment and potential financial issues such as loss of work, injury or a recession.
