- Here is a concert excerpt from the U.S. International Guitar Series Season 2021 where David Russell gave a spectacular performance from from his home in Spain. This is Asturias by Isaac Albéniz (1860 -1909).

I have heard Asturias played before by numerous classical guitarists and enjoyed them, and then found this.....this is by far the best ever! David, you are an exceptional guitarist. There is none better!!!
I also very much enjoyed this performance / upvote; yet I prefer Segovia playing at the Alhambra. It's available on YT.

What a masterclass, to play such a difficult piece being this relaxed is something only the very best can achieve.
It's not a terribly difficult piece. Not a beginner's work but, well, I was able to get through a lot of it at performance speed reading the score, after decades of not playing it. And I'm just getting my chops back.

Ho sempre pensato che la migliore interpretazione di Asturias fosse quella di John Williams, ma dopo aver ascoltato David Russell non posso che cambiare il mio giudizio: tecnica perfetta, timbrica netta, enfasi sapientemente dosata, coinvolgimento emotivo traboccante e contagioso. Che meraviglia!

Sì....es impresionante distinguir tan limpias las voces que imaginò Albèniz para este hermoso instrumento ......la mejor versiòn que escuchè hasta ahora .....y no creo que haya otra que me conmueva tanto.
This is absolutely perfect. This is way better than John Williams. Perfect 'touch', no rush to impress, the 'rasgueado' is kept short and crisp, and ample time is taken for the middle, slower part to bring out the meditative character. Even the absence of the traditional 'harmonics' is no problem. Russell is like a good 'Márquez de Cáceres': the more mature, the better.
Interestingly that something written very correctly, by the people is not well accepted. Listening to the music I can only say that I am feeling that you are right.

I wonder how David has the string action set up. The rasgueados around 1:00 sound like he has it quite low.

Cool a different way of doing the c7 chord which is a lot easier to execute at speed from mr Russell and artificial harmonics from ana vidovic

Listening to Mr. Russell I can't believe that Isaac Albeniz never composed for the piano.
