It's horrible that people neglect animals, but it's wonderful to see when the horses get back into a great life, and wonderful that there is good people in the world to save animals from the relatively bad ones.
There are SOOO many horses out there who need help! The abused and misunderstood, the young babes just coming off-track at just 2 or 3 years old! Horses have a HUGE capacity for trust, and learning, even after rough treatment. Here in Ontario there's a growing community of people taking in off-track Standardbreds and Thoroughbreds, otherwise destined to dog food after their short career in racing. Horses are beautiful animals, they deserve to live a full happy life.
I LOVE CHARLIE! He's so friendly :D You can literally do ANYTHING with him, although he doesn't jump any more (apparently he used to?) but sometimes he doesn't want to be caught, bit of food brings him in a treat though :P :D
Thankfully, not all TBs and STBs have short lives in racing:) Over here, the mandatory retirement age for STBs is 13, and the mandatory age for draft trotters (heavier, norwegian breed) is 14. A lot of them actually race that long. But I agree, the pipeline from the track to slaughter is horrid.
