" I have no idea to this day what those two Italian ladies were singing about. Truth is, I don’t want to know. Some things are better left unsaid. I’d like to think they were singing about something so beautiful, it can’t expressed in words, and it makes your heart ache because of it. I tell you, those voices soared higher and farther than anybody in a grey place dares to dream. It was as if some beautiful bird had flapped into our drab little cage and made these walls dissolve away, and for the briefest of moments, every last man in Shawshank felt free." ~ said "Red"
You make a great point here concerning the meaning of the songs. I also want to tell you,Bruce, that you are a very articulate writer yourself, filled with imagination. There is nothing quite as satisfying as thoughts that are translated into well worded expression. You made us realize how much poetry and music add to our lives. Thanks.
What are you talking about, Paul? Bruce is totally inarticulate...can barely put a sentence together. Now, Stephen King (from whose 'Shawshank Redemption' Bruce quotes in pertinent part)….he, HE can write!
I fall in love with Bolero when I was a teen. Then I listened to much of intsrumental music by Ravel. I always wanted to sing something by Ravel. Thanks for giving me some ideas.
The melodic gifts and pecularities of Ravel are quite expressed in these melodies.
Such a brilliant composer...Ravel. Wish I could have met him.
