    Tony died. Every time the door bell rings the camera switches to Tony's point of view, seeing the world through his eyes. At the final ring, the audience saw the first twenty seconds of Tony being dead... He never heard or saw a thing.
    I'm also fairly certain it was the "Member's Only guy" who shot him and I'm pretty sure Meadow was about to break the news to her family that she was pregnant.

    • @WhoopsieDayZ
      @WhoopsieDayZ 2 ปีที่แล้ว +26

      No he didn't die. He could have. That's literally the whole POINT of the ending. The final episode (again) brings up the idea from Tony that big mobsters end up either dead or in prison. So the last episode brings up a possibility of Tony going to jail (Carlo testifying) and Tony being shot (the last scene in the diner). But the last episode, after all this time, also brings up another possibility. When Tony finally talks to Junior again after all that time, he realizes that there are worse fates than death or jail. The whole point of the Sopranos ending is to create a "Schrödinger's cat" situation, where Tony isn't dead or alive. We simply don't know. If David Chase wanted Tony to die, he would've made that the ending (it was originally his plan to just have Tony die on screen). The last scene isn't about whether Tony lived or died. It's about what's really important in life, the little moments. Do they have to spell it out for you people? I mean come on. These themes are present in all 6 seasons of the show. And here people are arguing about Tony died or not. IT'S NOT RELEVANT. Sopranos was always much larger than that. Way more philosophical.
      "You probably don't even hear it when it happens right"
      This line by Bobby is just meant to set up the possibility of Tony dying in the finale. It doesn't mean that he 100% died and there's no question about it. Also, did no one get the hint from Bobby's death scene? The fact that Bobby not only heard the shots and looked right into the eyes of his murderer, but then is also conscious to feel multiple bullets hit him before he dies. Takes almost a whole damn magazine to take him out. "You probably don't even hear it" yeah, right. If you're really lucky, maybe.

    I think the point is that the Sopranos was so huge that the fade to black was more for us. We as watchers always want more but eventually it will always come to a close. When he said he wanted to rip it away it was from us not tony. Thats why he never wants to be clear about if he dies or not because thats not the point. The point is the end will come, whether your ready or not.

    There were 3 or 4 scenes in the last episode where 3 things happened in sequence. A bell rings. You see Tony. You then see what Tony sees. I don't remember them all but one was the bell on a small boat. And in the end, the bell over the door rings. You see Tony. Then you see nothing. Because Tony doesn't see anything anymore.

    What happened to Adriana? She ran off with another guy. She's happy

He knew his days were numbered and was tired of living his life in fear and paranoia. This is why he had his last talk with Paulie about taking over the crew. Tony gets to take one final look at his daughter as she walks in and boom !!! Every time the bell rings We see Tony face and what he sees 1st 2 was random people the 3rd was wife the 4th person they showed was his killer who was in front of his son so why would they show dude first over his son? It’s cause he’s more important in that scene.He sits down kinda nervous knowing he’s Rey kill a man and front his family. He goes to bathroom so he cAn be on Tony’s blind side (3oclock) position the 5th time the bell rings is when his daughter comes in and he see darkness cause that’s when he gets killed. Clue his son who was there said his father favorite scene in from The Godfather when dude comes out the bathroom to kill and that’s exactly how he died. We ain’t have to see it to know it. It is sooooo obvious that Tony gets shot in the final scene. They kept showing the obvious “mob looking” guy in the members only jacket. The last time being when he goes to the bathroom and the men’s room door has a clear, unobstructed line directly to where Tony was sitting. Maybe he was Eugene’s brother and he wanted payback for Eugene committing suicide cause Tony didn’t okay the relocation to Florida. In the scene where Eugene hangs himself, he is not wearing his members only jacket. Maybe he took Eugene’s jacket and wore it when he shot Tony as a ironic eff you to Tony and thus getting payback for his brother. It's true, you can literally come up with your own conclusion because you never actually see it (and that's a clue in of itself that was foreshadowed). But I have little doubt David intentionally framed it to be his death scene. Tony forgot about "3 o'clock", because he forgot to watch his or he might of noticed members only coming out of the restroom, positioned to his right.

    I think that David Chase purposely did things in a way so that the audience could come to the conclusion that Tony was murdered in the finale scene, but left things open-ended enough so that if he wanted to bring back The Sopranos one day with James Gandolfini as Tony, he could do so without having to ret-con anything that happened in the series. I think that's why Chase always gave either non-definitive or conflicting statements about the ending and that before Gandolfini passed away, here was a definite possibility of some kind of reboot, so they didnt want to definitely kill off Tony at the end, but still put in enough clues and foreshadowing so that the viewer could say "For sure this is what happened at the end."

  • @allenrubinstein3696
    @allenrubinstein3696 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    We see Members Only go back to the bathroom, a reference to the scene in The Godfather that we know is Tony's favorite. A.J. tries to act based on that information when he goes to stab Junior for shooting his father, and he fails miserably. When Tony comes to confront him, he says, "A.J., it's just a movie. You gotta grow up." It's about the most emotional scene between Tony and his son. So, connecting those two moments - The Sopranos is just a TV show. Tony isn't killed. Tony isn't alive. Tony never was alive nor is anyone else on the show. David Chase spent the better part of a decade bringing these fictional characters to life, while the viewing public reacted to them in ways that were truly horrifying to him. No matter how depraved and despicable he wrote them, people would still wallow in the filth and ask for more brutality.
    I think A.J. is a stand in for America and for the show's audience. Selfish, stupid, vain, suckling on the teat of crimes large and small for his petty luxuries, aimless and self-centered. I interpret the ending as Chase's way of saying, life will end; you are mortal; all these trappings that we sin so mightily for are going to vanish in an instant. You gotta grow up, people.

    Tony was not whacked, WE were. I don’t know how people still get this wrong, even after David Chase specifically said that Tony wasn’t whacked. The last shot isn’t from Tony’s perspective. It is from OUR perspective. We are looking at Tony, and he is looking up at the door. Bobby said at the beginning of the season, “I bet you don’t even hear the shot, when it happens.” He’s correct. The person who was whacked (the audience) never heard a thing.
    We know this, because the show creators fought like hell for there to be no end credits (since if the audience is killed, they’d never see them). They lost that battle because of SAG regulations, so the best they could do was have a significant delay in the form of a black screen before the credits.

    I hated the ending initially, but now I think producer David Chase was a freakin genius. Chase really hammered home the message that as a mafia/gang member, the price you pay for a life of money, power, and violence is always having to look over your shoulder. For 6 seasons, Tony enjoyed a life of luxury, power, intimidation, and brutal violence. But that lifestyle is not without a price. You either end up in jail (see Johnny Sack) or you have to be ever vigilant in public that you might get clipped. Here, all it took was one moment of complacency with Tony enjoying a nice dinner with his family; he overlooked a very average looking guy in a Members Only jacket for just a moment, and it all came crashing to an end.

    I just got finished watching the series for the first time, and I think I love the ending. The way I see it, the suggestion is that the life he chose will always have one more threat around the corner, despite how vigilant he is. At least four possible assassins come into the diner, with none of them taking the obvious shot. Any one of them might do it, or none of them. And even as he is surrounded by family and everything he claims to want, and so many threats around all of them, he won't stop until it cuts to black.
    I don't think he died on that night (if for no other reason than a hit wouldn't make logical sense- who would have known to catch him in that diner?) but his lifestyle will get him there and he kind of knows that.

  • @MrTCHOSS
    @MrTCHOSS 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Every single thing David Chase did, was very intentional, including NOT showing him die. I think Chase was essentially leaving it totally up to the viewer to decide what they wanted to believe. For those that think he was assassinated, Chase left about 10 billion obvious clues that could make you certain that he died. For those that think he just had dinner and then life went on for the Sopranos, Chase left you that option as well since we don't see Tony die. All this time, we've been fooled into thinking it HAS to be one or the other. But it's almost obvious that it's the exact opposite. Instead, it's both or neither or whatever you take away from it individually.

    Last comment I'll make on any video or article of the Sopranos but I always thought different theories that he was probably killed but MAYBE he wasn't killed (even at times hoping he wasn't killed even though it was a tv show). Of late I've come to the conclusion that he was killed and Paulie and Patsy were in on it. Makes sense as close as Meadow had become to Jason and as close as Patsy was to his son Jason that she told Jason she was going out to that diner at night with her family and Jason unknowingly told his dad in conversation that Meadow was going out with her family or Carmela in conversation told Patsy's wife that they were going out to dinner and where etc... and he gave the info up. I can't help but notice now looking at Paulie that that LAST LOOK he gave Tony was a look of "sorry it had to come to this". That peace meeting or as we thought who was there? Butchie Little Carmine and Paulie, all three of them had control at that point about what moves were going to be made or cancelled regarding the NY NJ war. Notice EVERYTIME in the past when people in Tony's crew decided not to turn on him what stopped them? It was NEVER about Tony being too good a guy or too effective a leader or any supportive friend like loyalty to him, it was ALWAYS about the fact that it would be too problematic at the time to take him out. At this point with a major RICO case against him imminent, his crew severely weakened between the NY NJ mob war fallout and tension regarding his RICO case coming up, it was frankly arguable that the BEST thing they could do was to take him out and start a new arrangement between NJ and NY. The last season in 2007 was basically about everything tumbling down regarding Tony and his crew and the NY crew and the beginning of life as new adults between AJ and Meadow (even with the tumultuous turns AJ went through in the final season). Probably because of his iconic status, the criminal humor and charismatic nuance when I saw the show back then I liked Tony Soprano as a character but I now realize that his ending was the only ending fitting for someone who was like him. Nonetheless it was one of the best shows ever.

      That's a really good comment. I like how you bring in little Carmine. The entire series Carmine's dialog is off, softly focusing on on clear insight till his final walk with Tony to Phil's house. The sit down where he mentions Rusty, the talk about happiness at the golf club. With Patsy, Butchy, and Paulie the dynamics are just as conflicting. Either way, whatever a viewer sees, it's very rare a ending can bring so many dynamics together and still be so ambiguous. The show itself is quite misleading because it paints itself as a gangster film on the surface, however, it's core is a primal psychological battle with ethics and morals to survive. Viewers night not relate to being an actual gangster, but they can definitely relate to the trails of survival in America.

    The last scene is clearly a dream, because that's the only time we ever see Tony's POV, is when he's dreaming. At one point, he even seems to be looking at himself. The loud music is from his clock radio.
    Tony is 100 percent aware of the dangers of eating out, and he knows the gun in the toilet trick from the Godfather. His dreams foreshadow and warn him of danger.
    Maybe he gets assassinated exactly how the dream shows, maybe he is killed in his sleep by Anthony's friend, maybe he has a stroke in his sleep. We'll never know.

    Reason for the controversial Sopranos ending goes back to the 1960's hit show The Fugitive. It had a definitive ending and when it was sold into syndication, it bombed in the ratings. Everyone knew how it ended. HBO sold The Sopranos into syndication to another cable company for 2.5 million an episode for a total of 200 million dollars. It was a record for syndication sales. I thought Chase had
    to guarantee to HBO syndication ratings. Therefore no definitive ending. Tony lives forever. Very few successful TV series have definitive endings. The networks have learned - It hurts syndication sales. Its not good for business.

    I still want someone to explain to me the practical nuts-and-bolts of how Tony would've been killed instead of more of the same 'ol symbolic, potentially teased and foreshadowed clues that the writers sprinkled in all throughout Season 6 that everyone cites, yet may not not mean anything at all. I still want to know, "How the hell could the Brooklyn crew have actually pulled it off if they did kill Tony?!" It simply doesn't add up.
    The one thing everyone always overlooks is why the Sopranos were even at the restaurant in the first place. It wasn't planned. The original plan was for a family dinner at home where Carmella would cook Manicotti, but *she had to cancel at the last minute* when she received an unexpected call about something at one of her real estate homes that demanded her immediate attention. How the hell would Brooklyn have even had the time to know where Tony would be eating that night- so far in advance that they had time to plant a gun in the restroom for the Members Only guy to use later when Tony arrives? It's impossible!
    Tony was the most meticulous wiseguy of them all. He always knew when he was being followed, and he was thorough in checking his phones for bugs. He especially would've been careful now that Carlo flipped. The possibility that he would suddenly become careless now in the last hour of his life is infintesimal. Compounding this is the fact of where Tony had just came from before he arrived at Holston's restaurant.
    He was visiting Junior in the nursing home. That was his last stop. Everyone knew Tony loathed Junior after the shooting, so the idea that Brooklyn had guys stationed at the nursing home in case he drops by to visit his senile uncle for the first time in years would've been an idea off the table entirely. They don't have the time and resources to have guys sitting at a nursing home just in case. If mob hitmen really were staking out the institution and followed Tony to Holston's from the nursing home, it removes the possibility of planting a gun in the restaurant in advance since they're the ones following him. Furthermore, if you're actually with Brooklyn and shooting Tony is your assignment, why wait until he gets inside the restaurant first? It'd be far easier to just pull up beside him at a red light and unload into Tony, and then just drive off without anyone seeing who shot him.
    Which leads us now to the most overlooked characteristic of all. For 6+ years we'd seen how mob hitmen operated. Dressed in dark jumpsuits, caps, and shades, they would walk straight in and shoot their targets. They'd drop their guns, and leave immediately afterwards. They would've never stopped by the bar to chat up the waitress and order something first- in full view of surveillance cameras, by the way -before killing their target. That isn't how they operate.
    Perhaps the only rule that each of the families still adhered to throughout this series was the oath of not involving wives and children. This is important to know because the guy in the Members Only jacket would've had time to shoot Tony before Carmella, AJ, and Meadow came inside to join him. It makes no sense for a hitman to wait for everyone to be seated first. None whatsoever.
    Lastly, the war was over by that point. It was settled. The suggestion that Brooklyn would've been sooooo enraged to avenge Phil's death because his wife and grandchild had to witness Phil getting killed is ridiculous. Brooklyn had already given Tony permission to hit Phil. I don't believe the manner in which Jersey chose to whack Phil would've ruffled so many feathers amongst Brooklyn's leadership that Phil's death now has to be avenged. That theory doesn't hold water. Brooklyn was just as ready to move on from Phil as Jersey was. They'd all talked about how Phil was dragging them down, losing sight of what his true priorities should've been as boss. It was no longer about making sure everyone in the Brooklyn crew was earning money, but all about Phil's greed and petty revenge where he made sure he still got his cut each week no matter what.
    I know this was a long one, but I hope you made it this far to see where I'm coming from here. I simply don't see a practical way for Tony to be killed at the restaurant at the end. It's not just extremely inconsistent and illogical within the fictional universe itself, it would also violate the laws of physics and rewrite the orders of time and space altogether for Brooklyn to be able to see the future so far in advance to be able to kill Tony at a restaurant that even he, Tony himself, didn't know he'd be eating at just an hour earlier!

    Tony was killed. The screen going black is him instantly dying after being shot by the Members Only guy. That’s what happens when you die - no heaven, no hell....just black. Life, then no life. There are clues throughout the entire last season. Like David Chase said - it’s all there on the screen. I always felt it was poignant that Paulie was the only main character (beside Tony’s family) to survive. He survived because he was old school, strong, superstitious and street smart.

    If Tony did die in the last episode it was honestly probably the best for everyone in the family in the long run...despite being traumatic the way it went down in front of them.
    If Tony had went to prison after Carlo testified then the same thing would happen to the family financially that happened to Johnny Sack when he was arrested.
    If Tony was killed then Carmela would get the house and she and the kids would get the money he presumably had stashed away.
    They could carve out their own future and Tony wouldn't have to spend his life in prison. Tony was never really incarcerated long term before. I'm sure he wouldn't enjoy life in prison after living the comfy lifestyle he had been leading.

The man with the baseball cap who walks in to the restaurant is played by Robert Patrick - who played the poor guy that lost his sports store due to his gambling way back in season 2 (or 3 maybe). On his cap it says "Made in America". Notice we are never shown his face properly. All the other atmospherics were a diversion. He shoots Tony. Honestly, there'd be no irony if it were just some random guy for a million reasons you could guess. So, all the theories in this video are valid but the clue was slapping everyone in the face. I don’t believe Tony died, and never have thought that since it was aired back in 07. Although I believe David Chase has recently come out and confirmed Tony died, I think he said this to appease fans who have wanted a definitive answer from him since this aired.
    The whole scene is a view point to Tony’s daily life of living in paranoia as a mob boss. Where even going for a family dinner is fought with danger. We’ve seen Tony and his family sit down for meals at restaurants throughout the show, but they’ve always been at familiar places like Artie’s restaurant. This was a restaurant they had dined at before, but it was the first time we have seen this. The unfamiliar location adds to our tension too. Every one who walks through the door, walks past to the restroom is a potential threat to Tony. It’s second nature for him to suspect any stranger as a threat. The final scene is Meadow rushing through the door after being late. This sudden rush of the door opening startles Tony..and that’s where it obviously cuts out.

      First time Ive seen anyone feel the same way I do about the ending. I dont think he got wacked. Its exactly as you said, the paranoia and all. The final scene could almost have been designed with the intent to make us feel like Tony feels throughout everyday life. Then it fades to black because the story is over. Viewers can either interpret it as he dies or he continues to live. Maybe he goes to prison, maybe he doesnt. Thing is, everything has to end eventually.

    • @daysofgrace7818

      @@THEBIRDMAN9412 Yes, totally agree. I also think David Chase added a number of scenes throughout season 6 that kept us guessing as to their meaning.
      Another example will be when Silvio strangled Burt Gervasi for wanting to switch sides to New York during the war. As he’s lying dead on his floor, there is a close up of his white slip on shoes. There similar to the ones that Paulie also wears. The meaning of this was to suggest that Paulie could also betray Tony and the jersey leadership and switch sides. Which given his actions in season 4 trying to get close to Carmine through Johnny Sack was a real possibility. But this obviously never transpired.
      But anyway I’ve always liked the ending and as you mentioned it’s just to emphasise everything comes to an end..for us as viewers anyway. Realistically I imagine Tony would have lost his trial and gone to prison.

  • @TheNin-Jedi
    @TheNin-Jedi 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    The most tragic part about the scene is that Meadow probably witnessed not just her father get killed but brother and mother too. I really don't think the hitman would have stopped at Tony sadly.
    But yeah Tony definitely died. Probably two shots to the face and or chest. AJ and his mother next to him in shock. AJ gets shot next followed by Carmela. These ones are quicker and not necessary kill shots but at such close range you can imagine. As for Meadow. She either lived because she hid or escaped or simply because the hitman had no idea she was part of the family.

      @@jimmy7434 Well the series history of hits in the show. 90% of the time innocent bystanders or body guards were killed just because. On top of this AJ would have been the most likely person to attack said hitman after his fathers death. So to avoid this AJ was most definitely killed. Also being Tonys main successor. Can't get revenge if the main crew is dead and at this point it basically is. Another huge hint is the fact that each member of family who is sitting at the table eats an onion ring. Almost like a last supper kind of thing. All but Meadow because she wasn't at the table. Tony even comments "Oh I ordered something for the table." Meaning the food but the key word is ordered. How many hits has Tony ordered in the past? Meaning the possible order was "Take out everyone at the table." Which i'm sure the initial surprise was even the family because Tony mentions they're not supposed to touch family. Yet I think the fact that he said that earlier in the episode signifies they did.
      On top of all that. By also killing AJ and Carmela takes out the possibility of anyone identifying the set up girl. Who was the only other person at the house who over heard they were going to be at the diner? Rhiannon. She was in on it. They took advantage of AJ's weakness to get close to the family.
