  • In 1976, the Bill Evans Trio was still actively touring, though the pianist was recording very little at the time. In spite of his well-documented "personal problems," Evans was still very much in control when he sat down to play. This CD returns to print a concert recorded for broadcast in Koln, Germany, that was previously issued by Westwind as In His Own Way (a release that incorrectly gave Rome as the location). Evans is in superb form, while bassist Eddie Gomez is featured extensively during this performance, shining particularly brightly with his phenomenal runs in the leader's "Time Remembered," "34 Skidoo," and "Sugar Plum." Drummer Eliot Zigmund, still a relative newcomer at the time, is also a powerful presence. Three bonus tracks feature the 1972 trio with drummer Marty Morell, from a Milan concert. The highlight is easily Evans' fiendishly difficult "T.T.T. (Twelve Tone Tune)." Serious Bill Evans fans should consider this live compilation to be an essential purchase.(AllMusic)...

    Bill was clean as a whistle during this period of his life! He had a one year old son, Evan, when the Koln concert ['76] took place, and was a 'suburban' dad living in a quiet town in New Jersey. Most of the 70's were the happiest times in BE's life. No question.
    Eliot Zig speaks to this on several occasions.

    I can't express the gratitude for the people that made this happen. The recording staff, sound engineering, and equipment set up is so important and you can aways tell when people care about what they do. Even for a live recording the attention to detail is critical, even though it is not required to be "perfect", but for the setting. Then it all comes out sounding like this...a slice of the Empyrean realm, the threshold to heaven. God bless all of you!

      I agree. He was my mentor since 1971. I played many of his songs on my duo gig.

    Absoultely smokin' trading 8's by Marty Morell on In Your Own Sweet Way! Extremely musical, plenty of dynamics and very clean.

    Does anyone have any idea how many albumns BE actually made. New ones seem to come out of the woodwork regularly.

    Just judging from the cover photo, it looks like he had huge hands. I'm curious what his span was--I know some of the awkward L.H. tenths (1-7-10) were easy for him, like G-F-B and C-Bb-Eb. Cheers!

    In this live were the instruments tuned in 432Hz?? Another feeling!

      @@jazz4asahel I tune my piano myself and it sounds like this is 432. Nothing matches my piano, Good notes or bad. And they only be off by a cent or two max (my piano).

      @@newyorkfilharmonik110 Thanks. Your comment helps me believe I'm still sane and not tone deaf. Big respect for piano tuners.

      It's obvious from the very first chord that the piano's not in tune. Which I rather like. 432? I don't know. (Jacob Collier would.) I expect in the past outside the studio a lot of jazz would have been played on out-of-tune pianos.

    • @AndreasDelleske
      @AndreasDelleske 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@paulmdt1 I would rather expect the tape ran a little too fast when recording. A 440 Hz has been there since I guess before WWII.
      The only chance to have a defined frequency back then would be to use synchronous motors so it depends on the grid frequency. At night, frequency could get a little higher if the grid had been charged at daytime to catch up. However, not 5%.. Electronics was there, not everyone had perfect crystal frequency generators.
