Australia Post is a government owned self-funded business which has a statutory monopoly on the delivery of letters. Any other service is open to competition. Taxpayer dollars do not fund Aus Post, it pays dividends back to the government as it’s sole shareholder.

For Letters AusPost are the only carrier but larger items, parcels etc we have all different carriers such as, TOLL, DHL, FedEx, Courier Please, StarTrack which has merged with AusPost, plus many more smaller ones

Tho auspost do also deliver packages. It just depends on who the sender decided to send thru.

This was very tongue in cheek humour 😂😂😂😂😂 You have too realise that all houses, unlike the UK that I’ve seen anyhow, are not right on the footpath, most have driveways with the front door a good way onto the property. So the walking to the front door would be time consuming if they had to do it for all their delivery points. Especially in rural areas where the house could be a couple of kms from the front gate. Yes they are starting to roll out the electric delivery vehicle similar to the one in sketch. Have to do their bit for greenhouse gases and petrol fumes, right. Being someone who worked for Australia Post for over 40 years, I though that hilarious 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

Thing is the UK has most homes from t door close to the street or footpath. Here in Australia the house is set back more and could have fences, gates and so on to get to the front door.

My dad was a postie back in the day when they were on push bikes. The community was great as they would leave water out for him. (For all posties) it was hard work. Biking up the hills in the heat with all the mail. Nothing like today 🌞

I’ve got a brick letterbox in my front yard and I always know when the postie is coming. My dogs go crazy when they hear his scooter. They couldn’t care less about other motor bikes or scooters, just the postie’s.

A hole in the front door doesn’t sound appealing. Anything could come through from a big, hairy spider to some kid’s idea of a prank. I would say the biggest factor in letterboxes at the gate is the terrain. Only a handful of inner city residences have doors close to the street. Suburban houses are set well back and the posties cover large areas so they ride motorbikes to deliver mail and small parcels. Decades ago rural areas often had 44 gallon drums on a post for their mail but when we drove across the Nullarbor a lot of properties had an old refrigerator for a mail box. Makes sense when you think about it, easy for the postie to open and put the mail and parcels inside, even quite big ones, insulated against the heat and cold and pretty difficult for a snake to get inside it.
Australia Post don’t have a monopoly on parcel delivery but they do have a good system. You can get notified by email, text or their app about any parcels coming your way with tracking so you know when it will arrive, you can opt to have it left in a safe place and they take a photo and notify you as soon as it is left. If you don’t want it left in a safe place you can choose which PO to pick it up from that’s handiest for you. I just walk to the front door when the notification goes off on my phone and there is my parcel waiting for me.

I use an electric trike.. I'm a postie .. my trike is nothing like the new ones that are useless.. they have to get out all time ..
My electric assist trike loves the job.. I'm a contractor so don't have to use the Australia post ones.
    The dogs love us.. LOL
We have safe drop here.. it doesn't require a signature the parcel can be put in the letter box or somewhere safe.. it takes more time to fill out a card than to deliver it.. so if you want the door knocked require a signature if not safe drop it.. you choose it when you buy it

Yes Auspost is the only one. There are private couriers but they cost heaps. General letters and parcels go through AusPost or Startrack, which is owned by Aus Post

With parcels, if you use one of those broker type companies like transdirect (who use several different couriers) it can actually work out significantly cheaper than auspost, especially for bigger parcels. Letters we are pretty much stuck with auspost.

They come past at the same time every day. In England your house is virtually on the st, so easy. In Australia it would double the delivery time getting on and off to walk to door. In the old days they blew a whistle on delivery.

Don't get me started on those "Sorry We Missed You" cards. These fellas knock on your door, you get up to answer it, then suddenly there's one of cards wedged in the door. You look around for them and they've already completely disappeared. These people would give Usain Bolt a run for his money!

Australia Post do post, and courier deliveries. While Australia Post is government (sort of, Auspost is an entity in its own right), the courier deliveries are contracted out.
So receiving a letter or small posted parcel via Australia Post and receiving a larger parcel via Auspost are different things, and the processing of mail, or courier delivery of, go through different sorting centres, after it's left the post office.

  • @overworlder
    @overworlder 2 ปีที่แล้ว +8

It would be too time-consuming for all the mail to go the front door. As with everything in Australia the tyranny of distance, this time within the country, changes everything. Suburbs are more spread out, blocks are bigger, houses are further back. Sometimes they are behind fences, hedges and gates. More so in outer urban or rural areas. AusPost is in constant turmoil anyway from all the disruptions to the retail and logistics industries and always cutting costs, with labour being number one. Also the parcel crushing is just a joke, the postie will go to the door, if there’s no one home leave a card for pick up. There’s more online pick-up options now too.

  • @kristiemclennan
    @kristiemclennan 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Yes Australia post really does have one of those things. It’s very similar to their mock one.
Mail slots in doors wouldn’t work here. Some old places have them but they’re not in use these days. If we had mail slot’s in doors it would take them so much longer to deliver mail. You’ll see when you get here.
We do have other mailing services but nothing like aust post. They’re private companies delivering parcels but you won’t see shop fronts for them.

As far as letter boxes, here most homes have large front yards and usually enclosed fenced garden areas. Letter boxes are at front on streetside, so delivery can be done from there not requiring entry to each property. The UK delivery would be that most homes are right to streetwise no yard or even multi residence. Parcels are left at door unless requiring signature or confirmation. Some parcels get taken to local post office and a card is left in the letterbox to notify a parcel is available. Couriers require alternative arrangements for delivery or pickup. Now some shops like newsagents allow delivery thrrevsnd you pickup from them still depends on needed confirmation/signature. Sadly parcels like in USA by Amazon, UPS, DHL left at doorstep or worse at letterbox get stolen though not as serious as USA where thieves follow the delivery truck around streets.

I live in the inner-city suburbs of Sydney. Places either have letterboxes (primarily addresses of units or townhouses) on the fence or an opening to put in through the door.
Our posties use a cart which they push along and walk from address to address or letterboxes to letterboxes. Back in the 1990s, they carried letters in rucksacks in the inner-city suburbs and had unmarked grey boxes on selected corners for storing rucksacks as they walk door to door with letters in their hands.
The carts have to be far better in terms of Workplace Health and Safety.

I've lived in Australia and New Zealand and never seen a house with a letter box in the front door. I guess there are some but it seems like an odd idea having the delivery person walk or ride up to the front doors, up long driveways, maybe up and down steps or whatever. I don't care when the mail arrives. I just check the mailbox once or twice a day so not a problem.

You used to know that the mail was there because you heard the postie on his motorbike. You could tell by the sound of it if he stopped out the front of your house or kept going.
There are other courier companies that deliver parcels, but Aus Post outsources to them and they’re as rude as the Aus Post parcel guys. As a consumer, if you have a parcel to send you use Aus Post. For businesses there are some options, but the experience for the receiver is generally the same. My DHL guy is nice. Big smile and a friendly hello. He doesn’t end up coming here very often though as they are more expensive. Not that Aus Post is cheap. It’s actually often cheaper to buy a book or something from overseas and have it shipped internationally than to buy the same item in Australia and have it sent from just a couple of hours away. But, they have the monopoly so they can charge what they want and nobody has a choice.

Why do they have the "sorry we missed you" cards? Sometimes it's because they need signature confirmation, or occasionally insufficient postage (ie. a 1¼kg parcel is received as 1⅜kg so instead of £24.00 it's £25.40, so pay the $3.80 difference), also if no "safe drop" space.
Also the majority of AusPost operations are contracted to private operators, so the rural schoolbus company may do rural roadside deliveries, collect from the Boxes and even sorting....

I live close to a regional town/city but have no mail delivery. We have to go to the local shop to collect it daily.
Not how it was for me as I grew up. Use to love to volunteer to collect the mail from the letterbox down the front yard.
I use to write weekly letters to my Gran and look forward to her replies each week.
My current town voted on letterbox delivery in the last 10 years or so, and rejected it too!!! Much to my amazement I mean how cool is it to have it delivered to your door or mailbox.

Australia Post is fully owned by the Government but is run as a self-funding business unit. By law (Australian Postal Corporation Act 1989) it has exclusive rights on letter deliveries < 250 grams, with the exception that courier and delivery companies can deliver letters only if they charge 4 times the standard rate. The penalty for infringing Auspost's exclusive rights to carry letters is $50,000 for an individual, or $250,000 for a company.

In some inner suburbs where's there's very old houses & some very old country towns, where there's some houses right next to the pavement they do have letter slots in the door, but it's rare.
When you are in Melbourne suggest a walk around East Melbourne or Fitzroy as these are oldest suburbs and can see how places used to be and how styles changed over time.
In East Melbourne is also the lovely Fitzroy Gardens and great cafe there too.
Outside that cafe is one of the old round E R style post boxes. Seen a few people after buying from the Visitor Centre a postcard to send, walk straight past it, looking for the post-box, as had never seen the old type.
(Fitzroy Gardens not being in Fitzroy has confused many non Melbournians for many years.
Both were named after same person )

We often check our letterbox a few times per week and even if we had a door slot, most of them are too lazy to walk to the door. It's better to simply have a post office box (on post office premises) and check it every other day.

I'm rural...the locals in the main town collect their items from the local shop/ Post Office. This is quite common here. Everyone on properties have their letter boxes grouped at the end of our long driveways and our postie drives up in a 4wd and goes along the letterboxes from his vehicle along the road. If you have a large letterbox they'll leave the parcel. If not it's a card and we have to drive to the P/O in my case 7km. It's a pain but as you could imagine there's no way a postie could deliver to a house where a driveway maybe km's long as they are here in Oz. The postie would take a few days for one day's worth of mail to deliver.
Parcel thieving is very much a growing concern worldwide and more common than you think especially now ppl are ordering more and more from the internet... husband and wife both working etc so no one is home ...and in most cases the front door or verandah can't be seen from the road or by neighbours especially in our country. Recently due to unscrupulous delivery driver's in the industry throwing parcels anywhere because they couldn't be bothered walking in, plus thieving crimes rising, camera's have become very popular to catch those responsible or used as proof whether an article was actually delivered if parcels are disappearing frequently from some households. Sad nowadays it's come to this. A sign of the times unfortunately.

Years ago my postie used to blow his whistle to let me know I had mail! The mail postman now comes at the same time 2-3 times a week, and will buzz me then leave the mail if he's busy, or stop for a chat! Usually, I am notified by eBay or some other business that my parcel is coming between .. and .. some days I wait and wait, then give up and check the mailbox for a card! 😠 They sometimes have van delivery from the sorting centre and local post office scooter delivery in the same day, or alternate days, it's a guessing game! I prefer the scooter postie by far, he actually arrives, and knows my name! 😏

I seem to keep moving to smaller places so far in my life. From Brisy (Brisbane) to Atherton on The Atherton Tablelands, Far North Queensland where everyone does their shopping. Then to Tolga which is a small One Pub Town as we call them. It's the only place I've lived that doesn't have a Postie. You need to go to The Post Office to collect your mail from you P.O. Aus Post is the government dept for general post like letters, cards anything with a stamp on it. Now because business is so bad in this area theyre going to just concentrate on parcels not sure who's going to deliver the Post. We used to have Priority Post where you pay more and guarantee delivery next day- they couldnt do that so that's all gone at least here in Perth. And yes if you post a letter to the next suburb even it'll take a week or more to get here. Its faster to crawl there😂 For delivery parcels we have lots of other places inc Aus Post. Yes they use those scooter thing, motor bikes etc. You Brits get your mail through your door because you can deliver 100 letters there in the time it takes to go to every letter box at the end of the driveway- but now they don't even put it in the post box they either say they delivered when they haven't, throw the parcel over the fence ( and break) or leave a card saying they couldn't deliver it when they didn't even get it out of the van ( on tape). Aus Post is going out of business because they are so bad. I don't know anyone who has got a good word to say about Aus Post. In country regions where the driveway can start kilometres or hundreds of kms away from the house, yes you have to get in your car to drive that distance every day or have a post box in closest town so you collect when you go for supplies. Wild West over here in Oz😅 people just see the size of Oz small population and think " sweet send all the refugees over there" but haven't got a clue how hard it is for Aus to maintain basic services over such a huge continent with small revenue as low population so we have our drinking water in Perth from 3 desalinators from ocean water- that's a capital city !!

Does not matter that letter box is at front of driveway.
You tend to know what time of day to check out there for mail.
If you work a standard job you check the mail box when you get home from work.
If someone already home they probably already grabbed it and brought inside earlier in the afternoon.
I work early in mornings so get home before postie arrives. I tend to know not much point checking before 3pm here so must come sometime around then. If I home motorbike sound is a clue they maybe just arrived as no one in this court rides a motorbike.
I have seen similar weird looking postie vehicles/scooters like in this video in other places when driving but most of them seem in motorbikes in this day and age.
Most couriers that deliver parcels and packages you might hear ring at the door but more often that not I miss them and find them out front of the door if I arrive home or see when about to go out.
I think before Co-Vid times they were more strict in needing signature but now that seems to have lapsed as a need so most things delivered but have remembered in past a little auspost note to say can pick it up at some other drop off dept.

There are ct110 'postie bikes', some electric things somewhat similar to that, electric assisted push bikes and vans.

Yes posties drive in something similar to that. If I could post an image on TH-cam videos, I would show ya what they look like. Or quick google search and you will see. But motorbikes and delivery delivery vans are still a thing. It's just that some people actually drive those 4 wheelers. But garn made that out of those scooters that the elderly drive or disabled people use.. and I don't think the door letter slot is common in Australia, but it would be handy instead of walking down the letterbox. Lol

I wouldn't like to have a letter box in our front door as my mum use to put firecrackers through your letter slot

Don't stress about the letterbox vs door box ruling. We know at least in Australia, Australia Post deliver, they just do not say when.
I ordered a CD from Sydney, with express delivery to Melbourne via AusPost, it arrived nearly 2 weeks later. I ordered CDs from a rural location in Germany, and had them delivered in 3 days. AusPost is @#$@

My next door neighbor got done for growing weed. It was very obvious what happened as there were police cars everywhere. The. Ext day I was talking to him the next morning when the postie arrived. He commiserated and offered to get my neighbor some weed and bring it on his next delivery. So that's how I found out our posties will go the extra mile when it is necessary.

As an Aussie, I can confirm that Aus post uses those dumb scooters. They suck. We do have private couriers for parcels. Aus post has a fairly bad reputation for many reasons, they are slow and lose tens to hundreds of thousands of items a year.

Because of the way Australian homes are laid out with large front yards if the postie had to go to each front door it would take for ever in the city we have lots of blocks of town houses so they have a row of any number letter boxes all together on street and in the country the house can be kilometres from the street. We only have one postal service that is Australia Post who I think do a pretty good job, our postie used to have a push bike the a small motor bike and now has a covered electric golf cart style machine which is much better in the rain or blazing hot summer days they are also better for carrying the increasing number of parcels the only bad thing is they are very quiet when they speed up behind you on the footpath
Another thing we don't have first class mail you can pay extra for overnight or registered mail overwise it's all equal so when you visit shortly don't go to the post office and ask for a first class stamp, one last point our post office workers have a reputation for being rude something I have experienced on a few occasions myself and I have no idea why they are like that? but our postie is very nice

  • @heatherfruin5050
    @heatherfruin5050 2 ปีที่แล้ว

I don't think posties would like to deliver to our front doors and neither would we. I have had posties drive over my lawn and leave tyre marks on it. If houses are close together and hardly any front garden I guess it makes sense. Yes, Australia Post leave a message you can pick up your parcel at your post office. Australia Post took over from the Post Master General Dept ( Comonwealth Dept) many years ago. The only difference now between them and other delivery services now is that they deliver letters which they no longer make a profit on thanks to email etc., That delivery scooter is a mockup of an actual delivey scooter.

Rob I don't know about the UK but AusPost is loosing money hand over fist with letter delivery (nobody writes letters any more and big companies insist on bills being emailed to customers) it's the parcel side of things that make money and 99% of that is contracted out to contractors who then hire mostly Indian students who deliver out of vans.

AusPost indeed has recently introduced electrical rechargeable 4 wheel buggy type bikes (bigger than the mock up version in this video) with a roof for rain, hot sun, for their posties. I've spoken to our postie about what the guys think of them. Generally they think they are absolute shite! They are very slow, very hard to get up paths, they switch off automatically when you brake, and have caused many accidents and injuries, they are quite unstable. My postie told me, they are tertifying in heavy traffic, and they liked the proper bikes much better.
All this electric vehicle crap is a major larp, total load of bollocks imo. Fed up with all this climate, green nonsense.😫
I always chat to my postie when I see him. Can never hear him coming now though, unfortunately. Could always hear the old bike coming down the road and pulling up at the letter box. Now he's like a silent ninja 😳

We have letter boxes because we have front yards that are reasonably large .
Our front yards are not usually our driveways and they are normally large enough for our children to play in and have a drive way as well ..
i have been to the uk front yards are not really front yards they are left over space from building the house.
I have seen this video i cant believe it this crap is what my postie does to my mail.
Australia post is referred to as snail mail i once got a power account and it took so long for them to deliver they had called me to ask why it was not paid because it was over due.
Poor postie has some ####### make him run late because he wants to chat .lol

Australia Post is a Government own corporation which pays all the taxes of a private business. They are the official letter carrier just like Royal Mail. Private couriers do exist. The joke about poor delivery is parcels due to the conditions of contracted couriers are under where they are paid per item they deliver(Less then $5 per item) which sees them rushing to earn a living. Parcel couriers for Australia Post are no longer on an hourly rate. There was also 9 years of our Tories in power damaging the business because they want to sell it off which would seriously harm rural/regional Australia.

You will get the option of leaving a parcel in a safe place if it is safe to do so, but if it goes to the post office I will get a notification and I will pick it up on the way home for work.

Hi Rob, nice post. I wanted to recommend a legend of Aussie comedy to you - Wendy Harmer. Wendy was one of the team that started comedy startup in Melbourne in the early 80’s. She worked with everyone - Glenn Robbins, Mary Anne Fahey, Ian McFadyen, Magda Szubanski, Max Gillies, Peter Moon etc etc. she had her own comedy TV show on the ABC - the Big Gig, based on a show by her close friend from the UK Ben Elton. After many years in T V she ran Sydney’s No1 morning radio show for 10 years, and now writes childrens books and adult novels. Many considered her the Queen of Aussie comedy and she still has a huge following. Here she is (approx 60 years of age) launching the comedy festival in Melbourne th-cam.com/video/LqanL6-wUQU/w-d-xo.html.

My post generally comes about 2 o’clock every afternoon, so I don’t bother checking until about that time. I don’t get that many letters these days but I do buy a lot online. I advise them that anything that’s big and won’t fit in the letterbox to drop off at the front door which is undercover and private. Sometimes they ring the doorbell and sometimes I just get a text from them to say that a parcel has been delivered. I really can’t complain about Australia Post to be honest. Thank God I don’t get this idiot or I’d set the dog on him.😄

Australian homes have long drive ways. If the postie had to come up every driveway he would take a week to deliver all his post. And the cost would double. Lager boxes they leave you a card and you pick it from the local post office

Yes they do leave a card if you are not home which is a bloody nightmare couriers are the worst for doing the card thing I've seen them driving away without knocking only to find a card in the post box 🤬 if I'm expecting a parcel I put a note on the door to put it inside the screen door. We have a small sunroom before you reach the main front door plus couriers always leave the front gate open! I like it closed because we have a couple of cats and it helps keep them safe, some time ago it was left open and a neighbours aggressive dog rushed in and nearly killed my cat 😢 and the dog owner could not have cared less and cost hundreds of $dollars$ in vet bills the dog was a Staffordshire Bull Terrier and very aggressive!! yes I have a "Please close the gate" sign
