Mojo, have you been to a war? Tourney's yes there will not be military tactics. Everything in the group has to be approved for safety reasons. The armor and clothing isn't hodgepodge it takes hours if not days to make some of the items in our group.
I have never experienced that, or heard that. Everyone I've meet in San Diego that is in the sca has been welcoming. I've met almost no one who is that way in the sca.
@JVRottweil Round me we fight with steel in the SCA in non-frat events. Well, not exactly fight since its re-enactment fights and things tend to be choreographed, but still.
A lot of people I know don't particularly like the SCA, our group belongs to it, but we tend to do more events with the local society. SCA groups somehow tend to be kind of elitist, and thats kind of offputting.
Might also depend on the people you fight/spar with. in my area, adlersruhe, most of the fighters there that we spar with have studied the styles of the places their persona is from, but i do see what you mean.
are there groups that use steel? undoubtedly, but I have been hard pressed to find a group, at least in the states, and especially in Easter Washington, that uses steel weapons, and strikes with force, and often when that happens the amount of armour they HAVE to wear, limits your ability to respond naturally to blows. Consider "battle of the nations", they hit hard, but there isn't a proper death condition. That being said, I don't disagree, that it should be called a martial "sport" not art
plus it would be difficult to split each and every single period of the middle ages in a single area and have it be any fun. but thanks for trying sir!
WORD FinRis, it should also be known that alot of the better live steel fighters and Battle of the nations Fighters, Got their start in the SCA, and are pretty good in the SCA too. just sayin
I will admit that there are definately inaccuracies in the fighting, but I feel like they are a neccisary sacrifice in order TO be historical. In the medieval ages the result of fighting was... *gasp* death. I don't know about you, but I would find it a tragic loss, if I should lack for someone to fight because I accidentally slit his throat. That being said, what rattan does afford us, is the ability to strike with force and re-enact armor penetration.
I'm not saying that, I'm saying you can't claim historical accuracy with blatant inacurracies all over the place. its fun, not especially accurate tho. also, fighting with boffer weapons naturally means that you aren't fighting in a realistic fashion, you're fighting the best you can with rattan weaponry. I'm in the SCA, I know about it, and no one I know claims its super accurate, or that the fighting styles are accurate to the time period.
I don't know where this concept of ring belts being period came from. They're not - there's no real credible evidence that they were used, whereas there is plenty of evidence that regular buckles were used.
that is wrong. the SCA is about being fun. you get to choose where your persona is from as does everyone else. depending on how far in depth you go depends on how much more accurate it is from person to person. my dad who has been in the SCA has done german fighting style for about 15 years. where as my brother has done a scottish style for only about 2 years. of course my dads style is going to be more accurate than his and so on and so forth.
Merely the fact that with rattan weapons there is no difference between a blunt weapon and a sharp weapon is a huge inaccuracy, or the types of armor, or the shots that you have to take in certain areas, or the shots that you can shrug off, these things are all due to limitations inherent in the fighting system, something any fighter could tell you, but they are unavoidable. they make it more fun, but also take away "accuracy". The SCA is great fun, but its not accurate.
having people from diverse time periods fighting in the same unit is not historically accurate, A Roman would not be fighting alongside a Viking in a shieldwall. The SCA is fun and all, but even the official slogan is "the Middle Ages as the Ought to have been" so while Individuals might be historically accurate, the society as a whole is Anachronistic. You pick and choose which parts of the Middle ages to portray, while leaving out others. Even the fighting methods are inaccurate.
Yeah, I am sure if everybody is bashing eachother with sticks you need protection. Again, that doesn't make it realistic. Fun, sure. I don't have a problem with it and I wouldn't mind doing it, and there might be realistic elements but I still wouldn't call it realistic. No horses, no real military tactics or leadership, hodgepog styles of clothing and weapons, to me that is not realistic
There is nothing realistic about this. You can't have "anachronism" in your name and call it realistic. It is LARPing with some realistic elements in it, but it is still LARPing. Yeah, it looks like fun but they should be more honest.
this is a good video. more people need to watch this.

@MIT1369 THANKS! :D !
Video is amazing, but does not focus on the other fighting forms, rapier and unarmored.
@Violet Wiseley We don't do Rapier in the SCA? 🤨 We don't do unarmed combat, only weapon-based combat.

I wouldn't go so far as to say fighting from your knees is dire. I've killed a few people from my knees.

@teren4m We fight with steel in the US as well. Just not in the SCA. Ladies and Men. ADrian Empire is one of many groups that do.

Computer geeks.. Armor geeks.. Can I be both please?
