What fun! I was raised living out in the middle of no where back a 1/2 mile long drive way like yall are. Then I got the farm and raised my kids there. We were surrounded by fields, woods, and a creek and train tracks.
Plenty of wild, safe, edible fruits and greens. And madicinal herbs to forrage for and preserve.
    Such good memories.
Our heat was a big wood burning stove. My dad cut the wood with a chain saw or an axe and then he chopped it by hand with an axe.
The upstairs windows were so thin we could scrape the ice off of the INSIDE of our bedroom windows.
We covered up in very old thick quilts that were not made for bueaty but rather for warmth.
Such great memories. In our woods we made our own little campground with trails that we named and put signs up for. I made up maps with the trail names for friends and family members to use to follow the trails. I was just a kid.
There was a wash out at the creek and my dad was afraid that someone might fall into it, so he had me make a sign to put there. We pronounce wash as "waRsh" or "woRsh" and I knew no other way to say it. So I painted the sign as "WARSH OUT".
My friend was with me and told me that she thought that when we had that word as a spelling word that it didnt have an R in it but she wasnt 100% sure because her dad also came from down in them big ole hills/mountains of Appalachia like mine did. (We were living in the lower Great Lakes Region).
So I showed it to my dad and he said it looked good. He only went to the 3rd grade because he parents farmed him out because they needed the money to help pay the bills etc. Thankfully he was farmed out to a good family that treated him well.
My friend and I later had to look the word "warsh" up to see if it had an R in it or not. Much to my dissapointment it did not have an R in it.
I am 53 and still say it with an R in it because it does not come out right. If I have to say it without the R I have to consentrate to form the word. The same goes for some other unique Appalacian words like "oral" verses "oil" and many others.
As Im sure you can feel and see down in them hills is a very special something that words cant describe. It is a pulling. It pulls ya back to it. Each tall, thick, old tree has many, many stories to tell from its younger years and from what all it can see from its perspective.
If something whistles at ya from the woods dont whistle back.
If something calls your name from the woods dont answer back.
I never understood why we couldnt answer back, but those are common intructions. I wanted answers and would go searching for them. My dad would come running after me. I am 1st generation on his side to not be born and raised down there but we spent a lot of time down there in the summers.
My family has been there since the 1600s and my Native ancestors have been down there for 1000s of years.

One way to get some less-expensive pine / fir trees are to look for Christmas tree lots that sell trees with root balls. Then go visit them just before or after Christmas and buy what they haven't sold, and then go plant them. My mom and step-dad did that with our Christmas trees for years, and now they are 50+ feet tall and nearly a forest unto themselves.

Evergreens are notorious for not surviving fall transplants, on account of their 'needles' remain green through the winter and continue to transpire moisture into the dry winter air, while the disturbed roots haven't yet re-established themselves and regained the ability to effectively extract moisture from the soil to counteract that transpired loss.@@RunawayMattCass

Watch planting pine trees close to your house because they draw lighting to them in thunderstorms. I live on the Mississippi Gulf Coast and I have seen lightning hit many pine trees. I saw one hit during a hurricane and i watched that pine burn with it pouring down rain.i just started watching your videos and I had to hit the like button on it so I could see more of your videos. Praying to see you build your new home the way you want it.

Matt and Cass.......I just found your channel today and watched your video about the problems involved with building out your Amish cabin. This idea may have been suggested already, but I would suggest purchasing a tiny home trailer, getting a crane to lift it onto the trailer, bolt it down to the trailer and then call it a tiny home on wheels (THOW) which are allowed in TN. I don't know where you are located in TN, but there is a guy in Newport (Randy Jones) who builds tiny homes (Incredible Tiny Homes) who I bet would be happy to help you guys out. I would give him a call. He has a TH-cam channel also. Great guy. Best of luck and I will keep following your channel.
