    This video was a truly inspiration to me in so many ways, from agile thinking to work ethics. It made me finally jump from a confort zone and look for new horizons and now I found again my passion for software development in a new job. Martin Fowler, thank you.

    I love his ideas on Knowledge Responsibility and Impact. Martin Fowler, you're a class act.

    The practical problem of a meritocracy is that it can be difficult for management to differentiate an arrogant egotist from a confident expert. Reversibly, it can be difficult to differentiate a talented master from an arrogant egotist. Even experienced programmers can have difficulty recognizing someone who is on a whole other level than them. I've seen people who can glance at a problem and intuitively instantly see the solution, and even when they try to explain it to others, it can take the others' weeks to fully understand how brilliant the solution is. When you have a situations like this, the master seems crazy until the other person makes a lot of effort.

    I've watched this more than once, and I am always baffled by it. How can a developer not know about the industry and write code in a meaningful way? What I really can't believe is how all the analysts and developers were never talking like Mr. Fowler described. It seems intuitive.

    This was pure gold. And what troubles me is that other technical talks have more views then ones like these. I really think software developers should stop being so technical and start taking responsibility and get respect we deserve.

    In the UK almost all jobs go through agencies, who only care what keywords appear on your CV. I've even received emails from recruiters that refer to developers as 'code monkeys'.

    Is is just me or did Martin just summarized "Clean Coder" by Uncle Bob years before the book was written?

    • @ChrisAthanas
      @ChrisAthanas ปีที่แล้ว

      Bob just summarized known ideas floating around the industry
      He admits he is not the originator, just collector, explaining his own take and spin
      So much is taken out of context so it’s important to see them as conceptual rather than rules from the Code God

    I don't accept the ideology of the learning domain first then the technology. What I believe is to learn the skills to learn a domain along with tech; like using event storming to learn the domain.

    15:50 well, this talk again... Why some people wants to force othee people to do what they don't want?? This "underepresented" thing is bullshit. There is no rule, at least in the west world, that disallow women (and other groups...) to develop software. We programmers work most in the virtual world, most of the time we never meet personally the people we talk and collaborate on the Internet. You dont need to show your face, body, skin color or gender. You just need to SHOW ME THE CODE.
    If there are few women, it's because the majority of them just did not want to program computers.

    Ooh dear. I like and respect Martin Fowler a lot. But I abhor Champagne Socialists and SJWs, however well-intentioned their actions are. THERE IS NO PATRIARCHAL CONSPIRACY!

    • @akasek
      @akasek 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Martin didn't present it this way, but I think it still matches the spirit of the presentation if you apply the lens of your own perspective. Personally I agree with making extra effort to have more women involved in software - I don't think it's a conspiracy, but just that there are benefits for us all to shift the culture around software development to be more inclusive. However, if I did not believe this, I would then act upon this talk (for example) by questioning a feature that pushed women's resumes to the top in a recruiting system. In order to convince anyone, I'd have to phrase it in a way they cared about (like the Amazon shopping cart example with A/B testing numbers).

    • @BenjaminCronce
      @BenjaminCronce 5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Only a very small bit, and it's superficially correct. Even that is arguable. He wasn't saying to make a quota system, he just said that the lack of women is concerning and the industry is fairly hostile in general. Then said it is our responsibility to not only "not be a jerk", but also to not turn a blind eye to other's being jerks. Maybe this will encourage more women, maybe it won't. Either way we all win.
