    Man... It's crazy how my mentality has changed over the years. When I was younger, I grew up in the burbs with a nice family. I was a bleeding heart hippy. All for the expansion of social services. My parents split, then I moved to a major city on my own. I've been here for 5 years and my ideals have flipped a full 180. I saw first hand that not only do these programs not work, they make it worse. They incentivize being jobless. Tons of fatherless homes with many kids. Those kids grow up thinking the same as their mothers. Why get a job when I literally don't have to? Just fill out these forms and I'll get a check every month. I walked into my local seafood shop on the corner. The lady in front of me was buying $60 worth of crab legs. Walked up to the checkout and it only cost her $1. Seriously... I'm not exaggerating. It's fucking insane. Like shit, why should I be workin my ass off while these guys get free crab legs all day lol. The fucked up part is that they think they're living the dream. When in reality they're stuck under the oppressive boot of the local government. They're not free. The local government will NEVER let them succeed. They want them in the hood. Content and voting. It's sad.

      @@teehud313 Liberal policies forced these jobs to move. They didn't just pick up and leave for no reason. They were forced to. Liberals in Detroit have succeeded in producing a society reliant on government. They want to make people reliant on government. On the flip side Texas and FL conservatives want low taxes and are not killing business and that's why they are the state's populations and growth are constantly rising. No one moves to Detroit meanwhile FL and Texas are constantly growing. This is the fault of Liberal politicians and the self righteous nut jobs voting for them denying it solves nothing. Learn not to repeat it. Detroit is Liberal's goals for the entire country. FL and Texas conservative's goals for the country. I know which one to choose.

    As our time machine transports us back 40 years ago. The old man just finished cutting the front lawn. The kids are playing cowboys and indians with the other neighbor kids in the back. Mom is inside getting snacks and drinks together because it's their night to host the bridge club. The most important news is how the Tigers are doing this season.
    Now the big social event for the week is standing around watching the cops as they clean up the remains of four fatal shootings. How many people want to get a ticket on that time machine?

    • @staycxld
      @staycxld 6 ปีที่แล้ว +81

      I think he meant 60 years ago. He does have a point in that Detroit was the richest city in the country at one point.

    • @sarjim4381
      @sarjim4381 6 ปีที่แล้ว +17

      No, I meant 40 years ago. Detroit still had 1.2 million people, down from its 1950 peak of 1.8 million, but about equidistant from the decline setting starting to set in and the total collapse we see now. Detroit is now at 672,000, almost exactly half of the 1980 population. Detroit (and many other Rust Belt cities) still had a lot of nice neighborhoods, and people could still live decent lives. A lot of people seem to think Detroit was a good place to live only in the far distant past. Like any large city in 1980, Detroit had its problems, but it wasn't bankrupt, wasn't half vacant, and wasn't leading the list of cities with the worst crime rates. Detroit really falling off the cliff started in 1980, not 60, 80, or 100 years ago.

    • @staycxld
      @staycxld 6 ปีที่แล้ว +18

      Columbus, OH is headed down a similar path. I grew up there and it was a pretty amazing city in the 90s with the exception of certain pockets. Now, you can't go anywhere in the city without seeing crime and drugs. Dublin is a perfect example.

      Damn, that said Houston was the murder capital in the 1950's. I have heard that 5th Ward was called the Bloody Nickel from way back. Murder rate in 79 was worse than today, even overall numbers were higher (with far less people). That article has gruesome stuff too, and lots of it. Seems like knives were preferred over guns.. and the woman acquitted of murder after admitting to sawing her dead husband in 5 pieces and taking the pieces to Cali. Fucking Helltown.

      Vincent Dow The teachers union aligned themselves with the Democrats. You can't fire a teacher. They refuse to take a competency test. They hire based on affirmative action instead of on talent. They let the schools run amok. And now they are fighting charter schools because they can't take the competition. VOTE THEM OUT. VOTE ALL DEMOCRATS OUT and watch things improve fast.

      Because the US only wants foregin media to believe the American dream is still a thing when it really isn't. Every major US city is just like Detroit as you see in this video. The big reason is poverty and education. In US major cities, poverty rules over and the education systems are shambles. Because of so much poverty and lack of education with after school programs, people go to crime to make due. Poverty=crime. The government doesn't really care bc the people in the US that matter, live outside the major cities, not in them. Frankly I think the US government is waiting for the criminals to kill each other off, so they(the government) can rebuild from ground up.

I say I lived there, but really it wasnt living. I survived. Nobody bothered me but theres a trick to it. I resided in a house and worked outta my garage but I had to be there all the time and fortress up the garage to keep my stuff. A neighbor walked to the Autozone on Telegraph for a part and some 12 yr old kid punched him in the head outta no where without a word and him n his freinds just laughed n walked away. 1G3001 Yeah, but trump isn’t going to change that. How much has Detroit changed for the better in the last two years? How about New Orleans? I know about that last one cuz I live there and it’s getting worse. Trump talks about providing jobs to lower income people and then suggests to lower taxes for the rich. He says he can employ people because he can run things like a ‘businessman’, but in reality the only things he furthered through his business was his own wealth. Imo there are serious problems with both the democratic and republican parties and that the party system should be abolished.

I rode in electric busses in the 50s and played around in the foundation of cobo hall. Saw MLK there in the early 60s. Skipped school and hung out downtown all day, Hudson's and national coney and stuff like that. That was pre collapse.

    It's amazing how entire city populations can be entirely dependent on one fickle industry. The bad towns in the US all look the same just because factories, coal mines, and farms move out.
    Perhaps if companies that plan to move/close are obligated to provide alternatives to their laid off employees (based on a minimum number of anticipated layoffs, maybe?) we can preempt urban decay of this scale in the future? Just a thought.

    • @danielhartin7680
      @danielhartin7680 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      It isn't the responsibility of the companies to provide alternatives. This is the result of poor planning on the city's part. Diversity is a word people love throwing around these days, but true economic diversity is the best kind, not depending on one industry alone to provide a high number of good paying jobs. I come from a city where the local shipyard once employed over 3000 people. It shut down 20 years ago and the city has never recovered. Detroit's mayors and city councils were too busy lining their own pockets and they thought the good times would never end. But sooner or later, they always do.

    For those arguing, USA is definetely among the richest countries in the world. Right there at the top.
    It always amazed me to see how rich yet violent USA is. I come from the part of Europe where we are way poorer than an anverage US citizen. I've heard in some documentaries how poverty in hoods is causing all that violence and how some people live with 14000$ a year. Hell, average wage in my country is less than 12000$ and violence is NOWHERE NEAR that of the US.
    In some neighboring countries wages are even lower, like 6000$-8000$ a year, and still no violence by these standards.
    Capital of my country has a pop of cca 800000, I swear there are no more than 5 murders a year. (Don't have the official data.)
    So, it's not the poverty.

    • @FIVEOFEVER
      @FIVEOFEVER 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Don't get mad man, I'm one of the very few here who loves USA and I'm often defending it when debating political stuff with my friends. But you can't deny the fact that it's waaay more violent than Europe. Safe US cities like Seattle and Denver would be considered pretty tough in Europe.

    • @babiivo1
      @babiivo1 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      MinoritiesRlazy
      Yeah, well, makes sense. But I'm still pretty sure whites in USA comit more crimes than whites in Europe.
      As for the blacks...idk, I know it's a fact that inner city blacks comit a lot of crimes, more than any other demographic. Not denying that. Looking that way, it's their fault.
      But then again, we (using "we" even though I didn't have anything to do with it, but it would be hypocritical because I use "we" when talking about the good stuff whites did) denied them education and basic freedom until literally 30 years ago. That's one generation. You can't expect them all to suddenly turn scientists, engineers, peaceful academic citizens and whatnot.
      If this situation continues for 30 or 50 more years than it's a different story. I hope you get what I'm saying.

    • @babiivo1
      @babiivo1 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      get lost
      Again, I'm not denying they comit more crimes than they should. I know most dangerous neighborhoods in the country are black, only a pc sjw idiot would deny that. But I'm asking you why is it like that. I'd like to see you go through what they went through. They're parents, at least. But you can't be raised properly if your parents weren't (well, you can, there are exceptions).
      Of course, I believe they have equal rights now and if they don't start showing sings of civilization any time soon (30/50 years from now), then you might be right.

    Why did the house owners care to block the windows and entrances of the homes they abondoned? Did they have the intention to maybe come back one day?

    • @datboiwes333
      @datboiwes333 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      They board up the windows and doors to prevent homeless people/drug addicts from breaking in and squatting; and even that doesn't really prevent that.

    • @norraguldheden
      @norraguldheden 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      But if the house owners left without the intention to come back, it seems odd that so many of them would even care to do all that job.. or maybe it's more like "the authorities" that did the job? Thanks for the reply :)

      norraguldheden yeah it's like a city ordinance to where you have to board up the house

    a very good friend of mine was from detroit but refused to ever go back. it was too heartbreaking to see his once beautiful city falling apart. this was in the late 90s, it's gotten so much worse. i wonder what james would think of his hometown now....

    I used to travel to Detroit on business. What is happening is sad. I think people there have simply given up hope. What would really help out is for property taxes to be drastically cut. That would incentivize people to buy some of those shell houses and empty buildings, fix them up, live there, and maybe even start a business. Until the taxes are cut WAY DOWN, this will continue to be a cesspool.

    Your efforts have shown us that the black communities within Detroit is transitional , however where are those doing well in this same hood? I grew up in what is still called "The Hood" however there are people wanting change and I truly believe to show that will give more hope !! I sure would love to see the hope in the walls of this city. Blessings to you.. I respect all you do and trust that your intentions are only to bring healing , change and opportunity through your platform. We need you!
