Fitting an MG Interior to my Austin Metro

  • If there's one thing my Austin Metro needs - it's vibrancy. The original interior is rather boring in all its greyness, so today, we're fitting red-piped and houndstooth trimmed seats and a full red carpet set.

I fitted an MG interior (including the dashboard carpets and red seatbelts) from an MG Maestro into an ex-BT Maestro van back in the early 1990’s… best works van ever 😂😂

Great modification to the interior, I used to do the same to L spec Ford’s converting them to Ghia spec, seats, instruments etc.

Absolutely love what you’re doing with this Ed! I did the same sort of thing with my 1983 Metro HLE back in ‘93-‘94. Those seats turned it from a little town shopping car into a comfortable, 60 miles a day commuter….. especially after I “breathed” on the engine (stage 1 head, twin carbs, tubular 4-2-1 manifold and a fruity sounding 2” exhaust…) oh to be 22 again……❤

Very nice job, sir. It looks next level awesome with new interior.
Once upon a time I owned a 1973 VW Squareback. Not sure what you called that over your way, but it was one of the COOL rides for California surfers types.
Anyway, it needed new seat covers, and it just so happened that one of my dad's friends was an upholstery expert on older cars with vinyl seats. He redid the seats and OMG I was thankful for the work he did. I felt so proud of that car. I couldn't have a bad day when I was driving that old VW.
Another great video, Ed, thanks. It would be nice to get some high quality footage of the interior.... maybe when you can afford one of the expensive cameras like the big advertising companies have. 😊

I love this car so much. My first car ‘many years ago 😳!’ was a White H reg Rover Metro 1.1s, I Loved it and would go back to one anyday. It had been rebuilt and was like new when I had it. One thing I could never get used to ‘about a week into onwership’ was the Manual Choke. After many embarrassing kangaroo hopping moments 🤦🏼‍♂️ I finally got my head around it. And loved every moment of it. My Headteacher from High School used to have a Red Rover Metro 114. With the MG badges front and back on it, think he had various work done to upgrade it to MG spec too. Looked great 👌👌

Ed I eschew social media so do not really know when this video was issued, but I reckon from your looks, it s a more recent one. Whatever, I enjoyed watching an original style Ed Vid as it is your buzzing enthusiasm which is your hallmark, your ease with the camera and have a go efforts! More of them, please. Will I be able to watch your restoration of the white Metro as I am behind the times if every way?! Lol

Love it , my first car was a 1960 Mini Minor which was rebuilt from the floor up by me and my Dad. I went to a local scrap yard to get a door and came home with a full Riley Elf interior for it , It cost a fiver (1977) The car was improved 100 % and was really easy to do .

Fabulous- love a red carpet. Our Morris Minor had red carpet, when I was a kid. Always loved the idea of an MG Midget, Teal Blue, with a red interior. Sadly my Rover Metro had a black/grey interior. But I do prefer an original Mark 1 Mini Metro interior- love the simplicity and utility of the dashboard and instrumentation. Enjoy! 🙏

Red just brings the interior of a car to life. Back in 1987 I had a white H reg Austin 1100 and the standard black vinyl seats were boring, a red set from the scrap yard made such a difference. I also fitted "Ring" aftermarket reversing lights on the front bumper as running lights!

Ed, if your ever tempted to get teenagers coloured seatbelts please don’t make the mistake of getting the bright red! (It’s far too bright and it will make the other red items look dowdy) if anything then dark red would look less bad. P.s. I posted this comment before watching the end of the video…😊

Wow - looks great, i have a 205 GTi at the moment but had two Metro's back in the day (Both Mk2 1.0L) - I sprayed the bumpers to match the paintwork as well as the front grill. When you get to the mechanical - one thing my dad did was put in a dual spark motorbike coil in place of the original coil - really improved the performance! My brother got a later model i think the 1.4 gta - about a j or k plate - so lots of metro history. My next car then was the Renault 5 1.4L GTS in black. I currently have a 106 Deisel which has just come out of the garage after 9 years and started first time and is going to be restored and back on the road soon (Dark blue 1.5L Zest 3) - i have red carpet too in my gti :0)

Did the rear seats bolt straight in? I did the very same as you but to a Metro 1.3s which was my very first car in 1985. I got hold of a MG interior but I found that 2 bolts were not in the same position. I had to drill through the floor and inch or two from the petrol tank, oh what great times were had in the 80's lol, and use new nuts and bolts.
But oh how it changed the persona of the car and I'm sure it went quicker especially with the MG zorst lol

I put an identical pair in my old Morris Minor van, that came straight out of a dumped car.

Small cosmetic changes can transform a car.
A week or so ago, there were 2 black Audi A3's parked outside my house.....identical models, about 2007 I think, one was factory standard, the other had aftermarket black wheels and the grille and badging blacked out. You would have sworn they were completely different cars.

Fully approve Ed. Looks great and it’s all about what you like, don’t worry about what others think. I went my own way with the upholstery colour in my Citroen. Factory covers have been remade and are available but I just didn’t like the colours that suited my car….so…I just picked a fabric and had the car reupholstered in that. No, it’s not original but I like it and that’s all that matters.

  • @andrewstones2921
    @andrewstones2921 ปีที่แล้ว

You missed the important bit.. the red seat belts! I am a firm believer that any owner of any car should do whatever they like, regardless of what anyone else thinks.. but please keep the original parts safe if you possibly can. That way you or someone else in the future can always put it back to original spec. 30 years ago I had a poverty spec Mk1 Fiesta and I went to the breakers for some part and they had a complete mint condition Fiesta Sport interior, I swapped out the whole interior and it totally transformed the experience of driving the car.. over the years I have swapped out interiors of other cars and and it’s a (usually) cheap and easy way to make a car more enjoyable.
