final trick - awesome! blunt nail to prevent splitting wood - firs off, the second nail went a little bit further from the edge but more importantly more into the core wood where the rings are so small you drive the nail across them. that´s for the particular case, the trick in general it´s not the first time I heard it but what I´m looking for is an explanation how does this work actually? the nail body splitting the wood is the same thickness afterall..

I like to predrill a hole on opposite of wood on one peice when I adjoin two peices of wood together.
