  • This is a DIY backcountry public land rifle elk hunt in the heart of central Idaho. We harvest 3 bulls in six days on this incredible hunt. This is solely do-it-yourself and fair chase on public land. We used pack llamas on this hunt and they were amazing. An exceptional experience in Gods country.

    Quit apologizing for "not being Giant bulls". I have everything from a 190" mule deer to a 2" blacktail. Every trip is fun and a blessing!
    You guys did something most people only think about.

    You know what that bull is awesome. I want you to know there are people who want to harvest an animal like you harvested and experience a hunt like that. You don't need to apologize and say it's an alright bull. It's an awesome bull! Don't measure your hunts or animals by what you see on television what you harvested is special congrats on your animal and your hunt. What you guys did is on my bucket list I enjoyed your video very much.👍🏻👍🏻

    I really enjoyed watching this video! Thank you for sharing the experience. Hunters are so extremely blessed to step into places like Idaho that are the untouched examples of the raw creative power of God. I also agree with you that it was best not to take the third shot, I think it would have been a big risk to damaging good meat.
    Food for thought:
    The thing I would ask is whether it is ethical to take a 650 yd shot on any animal? Sure your buddy could HIT the shot, but should he have TAKEN it? Maybe would have eliminated the question of a third-- or even a second-- shot.

    • @huntthetop
      @huntthetop  6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Ben Hunter appreciate the comment. I feel like you should only take what you feel are high percentage shots. I know there are guys that argue the point on both sides. I feel like a 650 yd shot can be a high percentage shot with certain shooters in the right environment. I can’t argue the point for the first shot on the bull on this video because it was off the mark and should not have been. With today’s technology and enough practice I feel like you can be very precise at that range. But than as well you have to take into account the excitement the adrenaline that’s is added when you have a live animal in your crosshairs vs a target. I appreciate your thoughts on this and I strongly feel it’s of the upmost importance to respect the game we pursue and make the most ethical decisions we can when out in the field.

    Well done... I would NOT have put a 3rd shot in unless he was heading out. He was anchored with the 1st but the 2nd sealed it. Elk may feel the impact but I doubt they feel pain for a while. I have read several stories of people who got shot and almost all say they feel the impact but not the pain. At most it feels like a burning bee sting at first. My teenage son shot a cow elk with a 270 and hit her in the knee joint. I tracked her for miles before she laid down. I got my son real close and he shot at her while she was bedded.... she didn't even flinch and got up and started to walk off. He shot 2 more times and she didn't flinch. I got mad at him for missing so close but she suddenly wobbled and fell over. He DID hit her but I think because she was in shock and full of adrenaline she didn't feel the impact of the bullets.

    50 seconds from the second shot til the bull laid down. How is that inhumane?? We hunt for the experience, the trophy and foremost the meat! One more round lands just a bit off mark at 615 yards out of a large caliber rifle could have ruined several pounds of meat. You guys did the right thing! Great video!

Our goal is to produce higher quality videos that showcase what we are about. We are blue collar DIY guys that give er hell on the weekends and our one week a yr. Thanks for the advice.

      Brandon Cole your absolutely right. Aaron was using my gun and it has a deeper trigger pull than what he was used to and it played a part in him pulling it to the right( not to make excuses) I'll own a peice of that, he backed it up with a great double lung shot. I take shooting long range very seriously and practice a lot. We are not the kind of guys who fling lead, I promise you.

      David Eustache We almost did. The second shot was a double lung hit and he was going down. If he woulda taken any longer to expire we would have. He was dead on his feet after the second hit. We cherish the meat but also hugely support quick humane kills.
