- If you've captured some images with your color camera - like a DSLR, and want to harness the power of image stacking for a better image, this video should help.
Deep Sky Stacker - or DSS, is a free Windows-based software that has stood the test of time and continues to be a great option for astrophotographers.

Just in time! I was actually reading your guide this morning to refresh how to use DSS
Wow, you make it look SOOO easy, I guess that comes with practice and patience.
I just got a new scope and can't wait to get some images to play around with.
Thank you for all you do.
Thanks a lot, Trevor! I haven't been able to do astrophotography due to my dementia, but I think I will start now that ive got this easy guide!
God bless you
Thanks, Trevor. A tutorial that one can unstand.
Great introduction to the topic Trevor! Some years back I was sitting as a beginner in front of your videos too not having any clue how to do things. I love watching tutorials for beginners as there is always something to still learn and also to not forget where oneself is coming from. Sure I produce "slightly" better pictures than 3 years ago but all of us started at 0 and have been proud of pictures that we have captured that we would prefer not to see anymore on our hard drives. 😏
But it is as it is.... we all have started at that point.
I just started getting into astrophotography. I used your current setup as a guide to purchase my own equipment. I'm also buying your astrophotography guide. I'm really excited to start this hobby. Thank you!
wow started with great equipments, good luck bro
Awesome tutorial. Seeing how you do the stacking is super helpful. I'm just learning and look forward to more of your tutorials and classes.
Great video tutorial, you definitely take the frustration out of post image processing for newbie imagers like me.🙂
So much thanks,, I'm a New astrophotographer from India just need your blessings ✨🙌🏻
Thanks a million Trevor. This was very helpful.👍
Very helpful I have never done this work b4. I have the 585 MC (not the MC pro) but I don't understand how to download all info I have. This video I will have to watch a couple times cause I take notes. Thanks trevor
Thank you so much, really appreciate all your expertise.
Thank you, Trevor. A good but easily understandable video!
I still use dss for my stacking even though I’ve had pi and ps for years. Gotta go download that new version now! Thanks!
Use pixinsight in ur case then, because there u can do 1x drizzle which is a gud improvement
Its really easy to use for sure!
Thank you for video and sharing the test files!!
Great video as always!!
I been waiting years for this
On my way home now from work to watch ! 👍
😂😂”sliders that are just begging you to mess around with”
Thanks. This is very helpful
Nice video. Will I see all the colors with a plain DSLR or does it have to be for astrophotography?
It was usefull, Thanks, and I also bought your complete guide
How do you get that table view below the image after registering the images? Great tutorial, thank you so much!
Thanks, Trevor!
A very helpful video. Thanks!
Do you do any focus bracket in camera as well? Or only post stacking. I have never stacked yet and have my first milky way shoot abroad in few days, just curious :) Canon RP with Irix 15mm 2.4 User. Thanks for the vid!
Thx I didn’t know to process so thank you
I'm definitely wanting to get a tracker. Trying to get small debts paid for then will get one.
This was super helpful! One question I have: Was the DLSR used a modified one to get the red to come out? I have a stock a6000 and I don't seem to be able to get much red to come out when imaging the NA nebula. It shows up more as a gold/brown tone.
Do you prefer DSS over WBPP in PixInsight, since you mentioned continuing processing after stacking in Photoshop or PixInsight? Do you find the results are different/better/worse? If you are heading for PixInsight anyway, why not stack there? I can see DSS as an option for those who don't use PixInsight. And WBPP is actually pretty easy to use.
Old school user of DSS instead of PI for stacking here. It is simply way faster and results are still competitive, at least from my point of view... Btw, an EOS Ra is a DSLM, not a DSLR, right?
Thank you for this update. How would I tackle data from several nights with individual sets of flats?
Nice work as usually Trevor. Have you ever tried Siril?
I've been using deep sky stacker for years don't think I'll ever move to anything else as it just works.
HI! I really like your channel, I learned a lot. I wanted to know, when I upload photos to DSS taken with the Asi 2600mc, I don't see the score, what should I set?
I would really appreciate a PS editing tutorial
Thanks for this tutorial 👍
I might have missed it and it's probably mostly the same but the latest version I have and can see on their website is 4.2.6
I`ve had funny story with new dss few weeks ago. I made about 30 few minutes images and started stacking them, but one photo got a score of ofver 850k and the rest got 0. I fixed it only after reinstaling software. To this day i have no idea what happened
Can you do these without a star tracker? I want to try this out with my P1000 badly.
I took about 170 pic of the Orion Nebula at a ISO of 1250 and shutter speed of 30 sec. I used the Move Shoot Move Nomad for tracking. (You should review it. ). After I ran DDS the earlier pic had a lot of stars, and after 50 pic the number of stars fell off. Any idea what I need to do to make it better?
Hi Trevor, been using DSS for a long time but I’ve never gotten my head around how the “scoring” works. I haven’t ever had a score over 2000, and my average for a set of lights is usually 800-1000. A friend, who is not guiding, and has a little trailing in his subs has scores in the 4000’s… Do you know what it gives this score based on?
I have tried this, but I keep getting this error (The checked pictures are not compatible): Width mismatch any reason for this?
How does DSS compare to Starry Sky software? I am on a Mac. Thanx for the info.
Thanks for sharing this!
Does anyone know why version 4.2.6 is the only one available on the actual Deep Sky Stacker website?
Really helpful 👍
Looking forward to a part 2 where you bin and stack LRGB data.
How do you figure what exposure length and how many exposures to take?
Rookie here. I am getting 16 - and 8 bit size images downloading. Why is this?
Can i capture the horsehead nebula and andromeda galaxy with a reflector telescope and dslr ?
Yes, last year I shot Andromeda with DSLR and a reflector telescope and the final image came out great! Good luck!👍
I love DSS now has a dark mode 👌😎
@@ianmacdonald2307 uff somewhere in the settings is a new option for design or something like that
@@joshuamuller9705- thanks I found it, shortly after I asked the question. It’s a Windows 11 setting (settings - Color-personalization - Dark)
@@ianmacdonald2307 ah that's how it worked. Was quite a while ago I changed it :)
Any software for us Mac users?
What if I only have 2 photos and light frames?
Is that software still around?
I'd forgotten deep sky stacker existed 😂
What program to open the exe file?
lol the major content creator have finished the ideas.
Interesting.
Bro I’m struggling to download DSS I don’t know what the problem is? Help
Too bad my sky is all cloud, in india bangalore 😢, i live in a bortle 5 sky but the clouds 😭😭
Boiiii
2nd comment and 50th view 🖐
