    Blizzard may have more money and employees than it once did, but it doesn't have a soul anymore. The company and people that made the classic games no longer exists. I mean Brevik has been gone for a decade, Bill Roper has been gone a long time, Chris Metzen retired...The guys who made up the heart and soul of the company and who were the brainiacs behind the classics aren't there. Blizzard was once like, a small band of brothers who took risks (RPGs were a dead genre when Diablo was developed; it was a big risk)...Now they're just another corporation who pushes out product after product.

      not sure. Overwatch for one was a success, finely polished, well thought out and an innovation on the current best class shooter team fortress 2. Hearthstone was a labor of love, it wasn't developed originally as a commercial product, it was an internal passion project. Diablo 3.... they tried to be original and to me atleast it didnt feel like a diablo game, diablo isnt diablo without feeling a bit opressive, the combat is way too fast and also they completely fuxed up the itemization and made it quite plain.

    Diablo 2 the best game ever

    • @dTheHammerb
      @dTheHammerb 6 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Truly spectacular for it's time and still very playable to a basic enjoyable degree today, lots of nostalgia to back it up. The entire loot acquisition system functions, but not to an enjoyable degree. There's thousands of bugs and balance issues and as fun as the builds have been, there's not a lot to choose from, (without getting stale at a point.)
      Been playing D2 since it's launch (still do on Path of Diablo) and it's the same old cookie-cutter stuff. The game hasn't aged well, but has left me with great memories. I am more than confident if it received a massive overhaul and remaster, it would be the #1 ARPG game, once again. Fingers crossed!

      Back then, screen sizes were rarely larger than 640x480 resolution. That’s 307,200 pixels. Nowadays, the average screen size is 1920x1080 pixels. That’s 2,073,600 pixels. That’s 675% more pixels.
      That’s a lot more pixels to work with, not to mention a lot more RAM, a lot more hard drive space, a lot more powerful graphics card, and a lot more powerful CPU, all to work with. When faced with that huge amount of resources, it’s easy to see why AAA gaming is the way it is today: these companies try to use all of the resources available to them.
      In general, using those resources to their utmost requires a lot more manpower (or in the case of highly skilled developers, smarter and more efficient use of existing manpower), and a lot more money to employ that extra manpower (or to increase the wages of the smarter, more efficient workforce they employ). More technical capabilities leads to more resources leads to higher manpower requirements to use all of those resources leads to the need for larger financial success to employ the manpower to use all the new resources effectively. Thus, modern AAA gaming chases the buck at the expense of the player, because there’s no other way to push the technical boundaries of what games can be otherwise. And, when traditionally “small teams with passion” try to team up to recreate a AAA experience, the result is more often games like No Man’s Sky (a small studio of 18 people, whose previous game was Joe Danger, an indie game) and less often games like Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice (AAA game made on a shoestring budget).
      Small teams simply can’t leverage all the resources modern computers can use (they obviously use some of them, but they are rarely gonna max out your RAM or CPU or graphics card in an attempt to render all the stuff on screen, or calculate AI behavior, or insert-any-game-feature), and that means small teams with passion are no longer pushing the boundaries of the technology of game development. Sure, they can still make great games, but the next technical showcase like Crysis is never gonna come out of an indie studio again.
      Gaming has grown up, and has become a lot more powerful, technically and artistically. To long for the past and wish for it to come back is to throw under the bus the future that those “small teams with passion” back then laid the foundation for; those “small teams with passion” laid the foundation for today’s AAA games industry. It’s bass-ackwards to act like we don’t want gaming to have a future and that it should slavishly chase the past at the expense of what games could otherwise be doing; if those “small teams with passion” back then followed that philosophy, games would never have evolved beyond paper-and-pen RPGs. We would never have had VR. No consoles, no PC games, because back then the “good old days” was Dungeons and Dragons. Computer gaming would be this ultra-obscure garbage made by hipsters for hipsters, building off of the one-off successes of PAC-Man and its ilk.
      Chasing the past prevents growth and development. Best to keep the memories of the past as just that: memories. We’ll always remember the days of being PK-killers, and having better hacks than anybody else to stomp the other hackers. We’ll always remember the first time we roll for initiative. However: what are we gonna play next? Where do we go from there? That, in my opinion, is a LOT more exciting than wanting our childhood games to come back with a shiny new coat of paint.

    Awesome interview! Thank You! I remember all the great times I had back then when Diablo came out. I spent so many hours with that game. Was such a blast. I love Diablo 2 and Diablo 3, but nothing will have the same feelings that Diablo had. The game was so eerie and tense. Even today when I hear the awesome sound clips from the game it takes me back.
    Seeing the computer gaming take off back then was such a cool experience.
    Thank You David and thank You Blizzard!

    Solid interview! Very interesting to hear. I've seen multiple interviews with Brevik, but this was very well narrated and down-to-earth, pinned lots of funny details and it's such an amazing story of how things has evolved from when he started in the industry and till present time. He's a very interesting and inspirational man.
    Love these type of videos. Great work, Ryan!

      It was probably him.

    • @CJ-jl6hf

      Not really all that crazy and complex when its just suffix and prefix connotations

    • @Ubeogesh
      @Ubeogesh 6 ปีที่แล้ว +17

      i mean item generation. The stuff where each monsters builds a treasure class weighted tree\graph (with numerous equipment tiers, and items having different probabilities inside tiers) and does up to a gazilion of rolls to determine the item from it, then chooses quality (probabilities also differ on a good dozen of factors), then chooses extra stuff like stats variations...

    • @riesabass
      @riesabass 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      meh... maybe it's complex when you look at the code, but when you read (if you still can get somewhere one of those) Jarulf's guide to D2 it starts to be obvious. it was started back in D1 and then evolved somehow in D2. so it's old mechanic that was designed to grind the game. if you want to complete game? ok, easy peasy, few hours, bye. but D1 was something new back then. people wanted to stay with the game so they've neede some purpose. then drop system comes in. now look at D3 drop system... you think it's better? :x

    It's funny to watch a man with that much experience and talent telling his story and then noticing how his story is actually quite similar to my own.
    The only difference between our stories is that I was a graphic designer and not in video games in the beginning and video games was what I decided to start working on when I was facing this ultimatum: Web Designing or Game Development? (There's also our age as I'm almost 31 so I got plenty of time left.)
    But the difficulties David Brevik had when he was working on his own project, I have lived through those myself over the last 2 years. Built quite a couple of games up to their prototypes stage with fully functional systems and all, but ended up putting those on ice since I would need, at least, a small team for 2-3 years to complete them. Then I went to a mobile game project which would have been alright... but money wise not that wise and finally returned to one of my oldest project, cut down "at least" half of the visual complexity of it (moved from photorealistic to cartoon-like, models have 5x-8x less polygons, the inventory system is simplified, etc.)
