First, congrats on becoming a dad! It's tough work, but definitely worth it. I've never used an arduino, so I'd start with trying to build your light changing demo. Thanks for the opportunity to win one of these.

I've been watching your channel for about 2 months now, it makes me want to get back into model railroading, I haven't done its since the 70's. Now that I am an empty Nester I have lots of room for a setup! LOL I think this would be a great add on to get my ideas off the drawing board!

Love the kit, I would use it to learn more about Arduino for my railroad and other fun things, The biggest thing I would do with the Kit is follow along with you as you show how you do it. The possibilities are unlimited of what I could do with such a kit. Excellent show as always. Thanks for all you do.

With an extra motorshield I would us it as a DCC++ Base Station of maybe a DDC-decoder.

Wow, I would use the kit for a variety of projects base on your tutorials. It has always been a challenge to make/install cool animation and lighting features on the layout. Even if I don't win, this is certainly a must buy.

Hi. If I were to receive the kit, I'd add automated lighting to my layout. Traffic signals, sign automation and maybe some railroad signals that operate. Love your work.

This is a cool looking starter kit, would like this to teach my 6 YO daughter some electronics as she is interested in robotics and would like to build a project with me. Thanks for the video Jimmy!

I have an old AHM crossing that I got when I was a kid. It uses track pressure to activate the gates, but doesn’t work well. I bet I could convert it using this kit!

Great video Jimmy. If I win, I'd like to use the stepper motor to power a turntable on my N-scale layout. It would be fun to play around with some of the other components as well. Perhaps a turnout lock requiring RFID key access or the ultrasound distance module to detect proximity of rail cars on hidden track. Keep the videos coming!

Im so old school but been wanting to go DCC++ my HO are mostly with the exception of some new DCC ready) I want to learn how to build a new layout using Ardunio control it sure looks like the way to go on an old timers fixed budget

Great video! I'm modernizing accessories to my postwar 027 layout, so I'd use this to set up semaphore block controls, crossing Gates and other animations. Thanks. Keep up the fine work you are doing.

Another great video Jimmy, as always! I am going to be working on a block detection system for my layout, very similar to the one you made for yours, now I just either need to win this one or go buy one myself. Thanks for all your inspiration. Rail on my friend!

Cool review! I'm getting back into model railroading after a long break and so much has changed. I would use the kit for a couple of things. DCC has come out since I less ran trains in my place and I'd be making a DCC interface. The second project curiosity is working with stepper motors to animate different parts of my layout and to operate switches. It's a whole new world since I last was involved. It's amazing what one can readily build at home these days.

I'm building a small N scale urban layout for the Kato Portram and would like to control turnouts, building and street lights, and have random routing and station stops.

great review and explanation of the components. I would use the kit to set up a circuit to kill a piece of track on the approach to my train elevator, to prevent the train from driving into the void and ending up on the floor.

I've just begun to learn how amazing the Arduino can be. So many uses they are endless. I want to learn how to control different aspects of my newly building N scale layout using the Arduino.

Great review. I would use this with my dcc++ base station to control turnouts, crossing arms, and lights. Use the remote to operate some time of scenery to bring everything to life.

Fun kit , always use a resistor in series next to a LED though. ! If you look up 7 segment TM1637 , you will find a nice cheap several digit print ( 1 , 4 or 8 ) that you can hook up with just 2 wires next to 5v + / - . So much easier. And the same for MAX7219 matrix for arduino. Makes life simple , have fun

Great review Jimmy! Kit would definitely come in handy to test it some detection and signaling ideas I've had for the layout.

So many things to use this kit for. Crossing signal and gate control. Block detection. Can use the accelerometer and stepper motor to control a draw bridge. How about a train speed sensor and display.

Love the review, a really nice kit. I would use the Arduino kit to animate my model railroad buildings, for example some garage doors, a car lift, some building lights etc.

I want to build a working swing set for my layout. I plan to use a stepper motor to move the swing back and forth. I would use the kit to create the mechanism to move the swing.

I would use this kit to start learning how to program the Arduino to control a lift bridge I am building for my model club. I need to detect if a train is present before lifting the bridge. Sound a bell and lift and lower the bridge. I also should turn off the power to blocks before and after the bridge. Thanks for the great review.

Good review Jimmy-I would use the kit to build everything that you have done tutorials on to get to really understand just how much they are capable of doing. I am leaning towards a simple signal installation and maybe some flashing aircraft warning beacons on my mountains...

Thanks for sharing Jimmy, if I were to win the kit I feel it might help me understand your videos a bit more. You give great instructions but until I do it myself it doesn't really "stick".

I like this kit-free is great as well! I wish to animate water towers, station sounds, order board semaphores and a special train warning board. My layout has slip switches that need automatic activation. I have never tried using an Arduino and it should be fun to experiment with one.

I would use the Arduino and servos to throw my Atlas Custom Line turnouts. The action could be slowed to look more prototypical than the “snap” action of solenoid activated turnouts.

Looks like a great kit. I am just starting to experiment with control of LEDs, turnout controllers, etc. So this would be a great help.

Great kit! Would use for signals, crossings, timed building lights, remote control activation of the layout and the triggering of animations.

That is great. I have seen other kits but that is huge. If I won the kit I would try my hand at a crossing and some animation for the buildings. Also would wonder how to use it to move a bridge. Could use the water sense for my pond my nephew broke, only in reverse.

Awesome starter kit - I would use to control turnouts on my layout. I would be adding some 4.5 gram survos to drive the turnouts.

The servo that comes with the kit will do fine

    • @chazco

@@ariegt - agreed, but harder to conceal the 9 gram servo on an N gauge layout as I will not be driving the turnout from below the tabletop.

This would be a great learning tool for the model railroad club I'm involved with. The club is mainly to get kids interested in model railroading. The layout has been build mostly by kids and at the stage of adding all the cool stuff and scenery. Thanks for all the info on this. "Kane summit modelrailroad club"

Hi Jimmy, I came across a really nice ( and compact) I R detector that is inexpensive and works really well called
TCRT5000 - I made a test circuit on my breadboard and it worked beautifully... it has a trimpot on it to adjust the sensitivity as well- check it out
