  • This DIY headliner shelf was super easy to make and it adds a lot of additional storage space - everyone needs one in their van! I used 12mm poplar plywood for the shelf and the doors. First I made a cardboard template and cut out the 12mm plywood board to its shape. Than I installed the angle pieces that will support the shelf - I use the existing fixing point in my sprinter. After the shelf was installed, it took a bit of shaping, fitting and trying again to get the perfect template for my shelf doors. I cut that out of plywood as well, sended and painter it and VOILA!

I am Sandra. In January 2022 I purchased a 2018 Sprinter Van, Sherpa. I am using my stubbornness and drive to show individuals that they, too, can convert a camper van by themselves and on a budget, with a lot of learning, rolling up the sleeves, and getting to work. With this van build I want to create an adventure vehicle that's going to store all my surfboards, mountain bikes and skis and have some space for my friends to tag along as well in order to pursue the waves, fresh snow and good bike trails.
My want to inspire individuals to pursue their passion and to not be afraid to live a life differently.

Hi, I'm gradually watching all your videos and liking the two I have viewed so far. I have a question. You've used 12mm ply for the shelf, I am concerned it might bow without sufficient support above the mirror position. Did you have supports there? Is the ply just resting on the shaping? I would consider adding a support bit of timber, hidden inside the shelf area perhaps.

thanks so much! I appreciate someone is watching it :) I used 12mm plywood and was worried it would bend as well, but no it didn't and it works well. If you are planning to use the shelf for some heavier stuff I would definitely recommend putting additional support above the mirror.:)

What hinges did you use for the little opening to the shelf?
