"The Haunted States of America"
From the Society of Children's Book Writers and Illustrators and Illustrated by Solomon Hughes
From the Jersey Devil to La Llorona, each story included introduces a new chill inducing, stomach churning monster, spectre, or poltergeist certain to keep you up at night. A broad ranging collection of authors, including seasoned veterans and some first timers making a fright-tastic debut, have all united to unearth the scariest lore from each state in the US, as well as D.C. and Puerto Rico. Make sure to strap in for this spooky cross country tour, but be extra careful not to let any of these terrors follow you home.
Melissa Cole, whose Haunted States of America story "The Night I Met F. Scott Fitzgerald's Ghost" takes place right here in Asheville, received an MFA in Writing for Children and Young Adults from the Vermont College of Fine Arts and was named a finalist for the 2024 Doris Betts Fiction Prize from the North Carolina Writers Network. Her short stories (mostly for adults) have appeared in anthologies and literary magazines. When she's not writing, she can often be found walking one of her hound dogs near her home in Asheville, where she has an excellent view of the Grove Park Inn but has yet to meet a ghost. You can follow her on Instagram @melissacoleiswriting.
TeMika Grooms is a Georgia-based writer and illustrator creating stories with a belief that all children should be able to see themselves as the hero within the pages of a book. In 2021, she was selected as an Illustration Mentee in the We Need Diverse Books Program and was a member of the first cohort for the Highlights Foundation and The Brown Bookshelf Amplify Black Stories program. She illustrated Senator Raphael G. Warnock’s first children’s book, Put Your Shoes On & Get Ready! and she has several books on the horizon.
Raised in Bishopville, SC, where the weather is hot and the accent thick, K.E. Lewis grew up in a community that was a haven, rich in generosity and Blackness, much like the community in his picture book, Devonte’s Shoes. K.E. juggles teaching, writing, and content development, having led socially impactful community projects and creating experiences in museums, blending both teaching and his love for words. K.E. seizes any moment to teach, delight. His joy is grabbing hold of an idea and seeing it to fruition and getting others to love words just as much as he does.
Robyn Wall grew up in Memphis, TN but has yet to see Elvis’s ghost. She is the author of the My Cool Family series and the picture book I Worked Hard on That! Learn more about her work at RobynJWall.com.
