Best thing about Portugal are the Portuguese people. Amicable, tolerant, respectful, and always ready to lay a hand to a foreigner in distressed. And, for sure, after you met a Portuguese, and be invited for their home to enjoy a very pleasant meal, and many drinks, you are pals forever. I'm so proud to be Portuguese, I can't explain it. Portugal and Spain are like two siblings with this big rivalry, but nevertheless they love each other. Portugal however has this necessity to stand out from Spain, as Spain spent centuries trying to annex Portugal, while the latter fought to remain independant. In fact, because Portugal would usually kick Spain's ass in most of the battles they engaged, the only way Spain managed to conquer Portugal (but only for 60 years) was through matrimonial alliances that resulted in disputes for the crown when Portugal entered in a situation where there was no heir.

    • @goodaimshield1115
      @goodaimshield1115 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

In reality, Portugal was the one tryign to annex Spain or rule over Spain whenever it was possible. Most of Spanish attempts at "annexing" Portugal were actually legitimate, for the Spanish king was usually the ligitimate heir of the Portuguese throne. Portugal would also resot to England quite often, don't forget that. And most of the time when Portuguese say "Spain attacked us" they actally mean Castile, but as you said, there's a necessity to stand out and play the victim for losing at their own game. If you don't want to get punch back, don't punch in the first place.

@@goodaimshield1115 you clearly have no clue of the real history. Go study the real facts. Spain invaded and attacked Portugal innumerables and unsuccessfully times since de formation of the nation with our first king in 1143, and fail all the times. Portugal never attack Spain, we just fight to remain free from Spanish occupation. Until the year 1580, than for birthright finally Spain could reach there biggest ambition and legitimately rule our nation. But that didn't last, but unfortunately lasted enough for Spanish take advantage of portuguese treasures, golds and values.

I would like to add that Portugal was the first to introduce the sweet orange trees in Europe, brought from China. In some countries (e.g., Romania, Greek, Arab countries, ) the fruit is named as a variation of the "Portugal" word

  • @maxiap802
    @maxiap802 3 ปีที่แล้ว +73

There are some serious flaws with the original video:
    1) Saying PT-ES relationships have been mostly amicable is considering a very short time-frame for PT and ES history. A simple google search for Spain-Portugal wars will tell you that ES and PT have been at least once per century on different sides of battles and that is true also at least from the 1400s to the 1900s.
    2) Saying that Portugal is in the wrong for having a different timezone than Spain is not understanding basic geography in itself. Given the sunrise and sunset times it makes a lot of sense the PT position. Just notice on a map where the UK is and keep in mind they too have the -1 hour than Spain. Spain chose to align with central Europe on their timezone for political reasons. That is also easy to google.
    3) It is true that a lot of Portuguese (self-)"identify" as Roman Catholics. But it is also true that the vast majority are lapsed Catholics. These lapsed Catholics in Portugal barely ever turn into "evangelism", meaning that despite the very large number of churches due to historical reasons you feel a significantly less religious vibe on people when compared to other countries (for example Brazil, with which a self-identity rate is lower than Portugal, but feels significantly more into religion than Portugal).
    4) Arigatou is not derived from obrigado. That is a (quite common) myth. Comes from the old adjective arigatai which is found in written records from before the Portuguese were there.
    On your reactions:
    A) Yes, borders are small. Relevantly, since the European Union is a thing, there is freedom of movement between countries. If you travel around here you'll seamlessly switch country. It is very hard to explain the EU to the insiders (let alone outsiders), but I guess the simplest way to put it is a sort-of-federalized-union-of-countries-that-is-a-bit-half-a||ed-but-still-mostly-works. It means as EU citizens you have basically all the rights of citizens of other countries when you are there. There is some paperwork involved, but you pretty much do.
    B) We do have a lot of cork, but most apparel of cork is a tourist scam, at least in large or very touristy places. You'll have a hard-time finding stuff 100% cork and when you do it will be quite a few times more expansive!
    Minor things:
    > On Sintra I wonder why the original video did not have a picture of Pena Palace, but K.
    > And on the walking side by side with Spain.
While I personally agree with that, I truly don't think it applies to the majority, some reasons:
    - Both PT and ES have idioms which are are quite detrimental the other.
    - PT sided with UK in many conflicts and ES with France.
    - From PT point of view ES is generally entitled and from ES point of view PT is the hillbilly.
    - Many PT-ES wars were Spain declaring war and invading Portugal and *none* the opposite.
In common you have the similarity of language, **but** historically Spain doesn't like their own plurality of languages - the "Catellanization" of Galician makes it evident. Not sure if that is the reason why Spanish tend to make zero effort to speak PT (or even English) in Portugal while the reverse is not true.
Both ES and PT received expensive aid during the last financial-sovereign crises, **but** ES is still significantly more powerful than PT economically which makes empathy complicated.
Culturally though, they are very similar, yes. Maybe for the authors of the video the ES-PT connection is greater than it is because for emigrants living outside their own countries having someone with similar culture is important and you associate the country with the specific people you meet and you go beyond these overarching things you feel when you actually live there.

Portugal, a small territory that had belonged to the Kingdom of Galicia, became independent from the Kingdom of León in the 12th century, when the Iberian Peninsula was divided into several kingdoms, "Christians" and Muslims, as you can see on the map in the video (21:21) - sadly the map does not show the different muslim kingdoms.
Spain only emerged about 600 years later in the union of all the other Iberian kingdoms and, even today, it cannot be considered a real country, because some of these ancient kingdoms continue fighting for their separation (and have their own languages).
Portugal is in Hispania (the name that the Romans gave to Iberia) but not in Spain (from 18th century).
They say, in the video, that the Portuguese don't like to be told they speak Spanish. Well, "Spanish" doesn't exist. What is now called Spanish is Castilian (the language of the ancient kingdom of Castile).
Portuguese language is Galician. Of course, nowadays it is not exactly the same because, unlike Galician from Galicia, which remained stagnant because it was banned in Spain, like all the languages (if you spoke anything other than Castilian, you would be dead; but some people continued to do it secretly in family and friends circles, so most of those languages didn't disappear), Portuguese evolved (often for the worse - like is happening now).
The other second language spoken in Portugal, Mirandês, is the language of the Kingdom of León, completely annihilated by Castilian on the Spanish side.
There are Japanese words derived from Portuguese, but "arigato" is not one of them. When the Portuguese arrived in Japan for the first time, it already existed and doesn't mean exactly the same thing.
    Sorry: I talk too much!

I'm surprised they didn't mention Evora's Capela dos Ossos when they brought up the stonehedge there. There's also fantastic Roman ruins in multiple places in the country. From Conimbriga, to the Catacombs in Lisbon, all the way to the Alentejo.
And yes, genetically, the Portuguese are a wild mix of genetic traits, but we borrow heavily from our Celtic pre-roman ancestry which makes us quite similar to the Irish and Britains.
Fun fact: Katy Perry's maternal side was from the Azores (Perry is in fact the anglicised version of Pereira). She uses her grandmother's name.
As for the animosity/frenemy relationship with Spain. That one's a doozy. Our first king, quite literally fought his Spanish mother for independence (although Spain as we now know it didn't exist; it was still a series of fractured kingdoms; Aragon, Castile, etc). They glossed over nearly 1000 years of history LOL

Although Portugal and Castile/Spain have a long history of disagreements, there are also numerous treaties such as the one of "Tordesillas" that divided the world in two and was responsible for all of Latin America. As a Portuguese I don't feel any animosity towards the Spanish people and they are always welcome. That story of be better speak english than spanish in Portugal is too exaggerated. English is probably easier to understand because the spanish accent is quite difficult for those who are unfamiliar with the language. In addition, most of the disputes were based on claims of thrones due to marriages between the royal houses of the two countries... a thing of kings, not of people.

    Hi, I'm from Portugal.
When they mentioned the 1755 earthquake in the video, they didn't say everything because it wasn't a simple earthquake.
On November 1, 1755, which was a holiday where people went to mass in the morning, that is, there were many people on the street and without them knowing, an earthquake of magnitude 8.7 to 9 occurred. The candles that were lit in the church and perhaps in some houses fell and caused a fire that devastated almost the entire city of Lisbon. But this is not all. After these events, people decided to take shelter in the port area, what they didn't know is that a few tens of minutes later there would be a 10-meter tsunami. More than 10 thousand dead or even more, a fire that lasted 5 days, houses, streets, churches, everything was destroyed in those days. And the suffering of the people lasted for months.

Being from Porto I must say that you forgot one of the most important products, not only from Porto but from Portugal in general, which is the 'Oporto Wine' (Vinho do Porto). It's an unique type of wine only made here and in fact, it's produced in the other side of the Douro river, in Vila Nova de Gaia. It's very appreciated by the british who actually own some of the main producers. That was a HUGE omission so, you should look out for more information about it. Also, you should know that Portugal has THE oldest borders of all european countries. You should also know that in the Roman Empire era, we had a sort of Asterix called Viriato, a great warrior who resisted the Roman invasions. Porto also resisted the Napolean invasions, which is why Porto is commonly known as 'Cidade Invicta' which translates as 'Undefeated City'. And lastly, although it's not as important as Oporto wine, you should get to know two dishes, also unique in Porto which are 'Tripas à moda do Porto', a dish with a very important story and responsible for the Porto's natives nickname 'tripeiros', and the 'Francesinha', a type of sandwich, covered by cheese and dipped in a special sauce that's considered a secret recipe by Porto's cooks. In general all the information here is correct but you should really look out for the Oporto Wine. Oh, and the river in the center region is not called 'Tagus', it's 'Tejo'...

    I'm portuguese.
Here's the thing about Portugal/Spain. We're very similar and we enjoy each other's countries. That is now, ofc. we have some history...
The spanish with their french alliance tried to conquer us for centuries and we always fought them off.
For example, in the 17th century the Battle of Arronches took place in Alentejo, the king of Sapin against the king of Portugal. We were significantly outnumbered and yet still managed to defeat them badly.
This history might be the reason for the little rivalry between our two countries. But it's more of a funny and sarcastic rivalry than a real one. In fact we called them "nuestros hermanos" - our brothers, because the truth is both of our cultures are very old and we are neighbors for centuries. So history is history. 🙂
