Gilberto Silva Cortes (he/him) is a Mission High School student born in San Francisco, but raised most of his life in Mexico. Taking inspiration from hispanic poets like Pablo Neruda and Osvaldo Dragún, his work is based on dehumanizing standard human activities that we normally do, and getting into the real meaning of “why” we do those things. In “Why Do I Write? A Pencil, Some Paper, and A Cup of Bitter Coffee”, Gil personifies the process of writing and explains the importance of this in his life, as well as how writing has saved him.
