You can run the lights and siren at special events and even cars and coffee meets but never on a public road. Try to avoid state or local police coloration combinations but you can go nuts with all the other millions of colors, no police badging not even close but a poultice car would be fine.
I do security at a place where car and coffee goes down. If someone pulled up in a fake patrol and started running lights and sirens, I'm calling PD and kicking them off property.
In most states, impersonation can be a serious crime, so don’t use blue and red lights, loud sirens that resemble those of police, and don’t use red underglow LEDs.
heres a tip, in most areas having lights on the roof is allowed IF they're YELLOW not red and blue and also you never turn them on unless the vehicle is stationary or it's necessary for your job. they serve as alternative placement hazard lights so may only be used when hazard lights would be allowed. So it WOULD be legal to have them on a white charger and just don't turn them on so you look like a cop and are avoided. Except in California. Yellow lights on top are illegal in California
@๖ۣۜ♥๖̶tacokitten๖̶ I can confirm. My grandpa bought an old police truck that had yellow lights (I remember them being yellow but I could be wrong) Played a couple pranks on some of his friends in the hood before the cops saw him and made him take them off.
He was more so bragging about it. Of course he knows that’s illegal. It’s common sense you can’t have a car with red and blue flashing lights and a siren if you are not a cop. Cops use unmarked cars all the time but still have lights and sirens. It’s common sense that’s illegal to have unless you are an actual police officer. And in the caption he says “Taking my fake cop car to real police station. REACTIONS”
Cops are not authorities of anything. Cops are actually very ignorant of the law and most the time have no idea what they are talking about if it’s not pertaining to the everyday speeding ticket that they give out. HAVING a light bar on your car isnt illegal. You could have the light bar and LEDs all around your car. Turning them on while out in public is illegal. You can go buy 100 acres of property and drive your car around on the property with the red and blue lights on all day long and no laws were broken.
Where are the"impersonation" lines drawn though? Let's say I had this cop car and was stuck behind you going 15 miles under the speed limit, hit the lights and sirens you pull over, and I just keep on driving, I didn't stop and present myself as a police officer or try to issue you any kind of tickets, I just wanted your slow ass out of my way, where's the crime? Lol

Almost anyone that is in a position of power over someone will have a very hard time to avoid seeing self reflection and owning errors/lack of knowledge on things as diminishing towards their authority. Same goes for many teachers, bosses in all jobs, etc.
I agree that cops shouldnt talk nonsense when they don’t know something but it would be a lot more reassuring if they knew these things off the top of their head rather than relying on looking it up.
Well, just basing on what we see here, the cops could easily have assessed the situation and were looking at this guy as an attention-seeking clown, and they're trying their best to be patient and professional.
Because the first cop thought he was being legit. The 2nd cop saw the interaction and probably overheard and was like. This guy is a fool first of all, and 2 has the first cop on video. So is it not natural for you to give a firm assertive answer to negate w.e. the first cop said and end the conversation in case the first cop said something that wasn't accurate?

Even if the lawyer says it's legal, it's better to get a cop's take on it because they are ones who will stop you. The lawyer might come and bail you out but you are the only one going through all of that and not getting paid during the whole ordeal.
"Dont ask a cop, ask a lawyer" asking the cop gives him a general idea what will get him pulled over. Yes, he should ask a lawyer so he knows if the law supports him, but also knowing how the one who pulls you over thinks can help you avoid the annoyance in the first place while still maximizing fun
No he isn’t. Impersonating a police officer isn’t even a felony, it’s a misdemeanor 😂 so long as you don’t actually arrest someone, which would be kidnapping/holding against someone’s will, it’s just a misdemeanor
@@michaelgeorge4643 Maybe in your state - in every American state I can think of its a felony. The reason the lights are a problem is an officers use of them is a police power - the moment a single other driver reacts in any way to your lights - thats an offense. Merely pulling someone over or evenmaking them think* theyre pulled over is a 4th amendment seizure and absolutely 100% qualifies.
@@shurikozerov3164 Of course it's an offense, but it's not just limited to CA (state I live in), in many places it starts as a misdemeanor, it's only a felony if other behavior is involved (e.g, "arresting")
There was a pizza shop in San Diego in the 80s called New York Pizza Delivery that had delivery cars that looked like NYPD cruisers, but not for long. Can’t even have fake police cars from a different state.
It was actually wholesome. You are allowed to buy a retired cop car, you just have to follow the rules about it, you’re allowed to ask the police what the rules are.
In Texas you can do whatever you want, so long as you don’t commit an overt action with the intent to falsely execute authority. I’m other words, you can dress up as a cop, wrap your car, and deck it out, but the minute you turn the lights on, speak to someone, or do anything that otherwise influences people to believe you have authority over them, it’s a felony. It falls under impersonating a public servant. Can’t impersonate firemen or EMS either.
As a volunteer firefighter, we are allowed to have emegeancy light and sirens on personal vehicles since most of us are not walking distance to the station. However there is some paperwork that goes with it that in short says, "the department is not liable if you get in an accident while using lights and sirens, and you need to insure your vehicle yourself."
State Troopers are State DOT certified, they have a better understanding of those laws. Also at least in GA the Selective Enforcement afe Federal DOT CERTIFIED, if you own a fleet and they found one thing wrong with a fleet vehicle, if you have priors for said violation, they can come to your fleet parking and do a inspection on all fleet vehicles without a warrant
Both cops are CHP, the first is just their blue uniforms, meaning he's probably motor vehicle enforcement as they tend to wear the blue uniforms because they hide stains better.
It’s impossible to know the details of every law. Hell I’m doing a law degree and half the students here struggle to remember specific of 10 laws during exams. Expecting cops to know extremely niche vehicle regulations is unreasonable and impractical.

Not sure if you know this, but felonies are federal... like not local. Impersonating a police officer is a class 4 felony. Your local laws don't override federal laws... now there is the option your not from America, if so, cool I guess. You may want to at least Google your ideas before just posting on the internet... Edit: Since so many people have issues reading comments, I address my mistake in a reply. I typed felony and was meaning federal offence. Yes, I said felony, I could just edit my comment and fix it, but it was a mistake and it is what it is. No reason to hide a mistake.
@@Therealyoda34 Congress defines both felony and misdemeanor, and then there are federal laws, two different things. But the states can decide the punishment. So in TN it is an 11 29 sentencing, making it a misdemeanor. If it were a federal agent then it’s a different story. The federal government only cares when they are involved or the state court case is appealed.
@@Therealyoda34 felonies are not federal. Most lawyers have no clue about these laws nor a majority of laws. Before cases lawyers have to study as they often don’t know the laws that were broken. Also most law schools that lawyers go to aren’t teaching laws, it’s more like teaching debate and how to counter-argue. Also if they do teach laws most of the time they teach them wrong or mess up most information, as the professor has a teaching degree, so a lot of times the teacher will be reading for a textbook that’s probably from 1965, because most school don’t update textbooks if they already have ones.

In most states, impersonation can be a serious crime, so don’t use blue and red lights, loud sirens that resemble those of police, and don’t use red underglow LEDs.
Why not red underglow? And how about blue
Red underglow is allowed in my state, but not blue (wanted to know what colours im allowed to use lol)

Also a lawyer will charge you for asking questions.
I think a cop should know about laws pertaining to police specifically and they cant charge you for asking.unlike a lawyer.
