- After the mixed reviews I got for spouting my opinions on The Big Bang Theory being unfunny when the laugh track was taken out (or left in for that matter), I was challenged by some people to do the same thing to Friends and see if the show still held up. I'm probably biased, but I still think it's funny, so you guys be the judge! Is Friends still funny with the laugh track taken out? Stay tuned for plenty more clips from this show as well, as I have about 20 scenes written down I'd like to take the laugh track out of.

Nah. A friend of mine sent me a link a few months ago to an AI writing a script for a batman movie. The highlights of it were batman sometimes being batman, sometimes he is bruce wayne, all times orphan, batman looking for his parents, but they were still dead, two face flipping alfred and alfred landing heads up which means two face goes home, and batman telling alfred to go give birth to robin.

I literally just said (paraphrased version of) this!! I don't see what's so interesting about watching a group of people with personality disorders pretending to be friends who clearly aren't. honestly i think the show is funnier without the laugh track. not because i think the writing is genuinely funny, but because the lack of a laugh track highlights how absurd and unrealistic the plotlines and acting are. so i end up laughing AT the characters instead of with them

It's because of shows that make people behave like them. Like the office, I love the show but it makes you think being awkward is funny.

That's the whole point of this video. The laughter is edited out to see what it's like. (you can still hear faint laughter at the start of some sentences)

@@Jamesishappy it's a sitcom with a live audience. They edit the laugh track sometimes to control the duration or loudness of the laugh from the audience. It's not like modern family of the office wherein there's no audience present to laugh at their joke.

I actually find Phoebe to still make me want to laugh even without a laugh track. And even Joey with the eggs. If the pauses were edited out, they both would still make me laugh throughout.
The eggs gag and “I’m drunk right now” were the only two actual good jokes in the entire clip

There is a live audience for Friends, just like in normal theatre. These pauses are part of the play, and they're not moments of silence like in this video.

Comedy is about timing. They’re pausing to get through laughs so it loses its whit. If you edit out the pauses with some clever cuts it would be interesting to see how it plays.

That seems to be the point of the poster as well. That the show definitely still works as a show without the laugh track. The scenes and dialogue are fine. Of course by editing out the laugh track you're now left with awkward pauses, but a director could recreate all these scenes without a laugh track and it would still be a decent comedy show.

It wasn't built around a laugh track. Sitcoms are filmed with live laughter but they have to use a laugh track to make laughter consistent when editing takes together, otherwise the editing would be to obvious.
It's them holding the joke/punchline until the audience laughter dies down, and it's so weird to see without hearing the laughs.

The laugh tracks were supposed to leave the audience laugh without interrupting. Back when friends was recorded it made sense, and some episodes actually had an audience. When comedies have laugh tracks today it's just exactly that.

You can come back a year later, watch the same show, and pick up jokes you missed on your first watch through. And the more jokes there are, the more replay value it has because it gives you more to re-watch.

It clearly didn't intend to be groundbreaking, nor was it expected to be such a hit. However it followed the same format fraiser or Seinfeld had. Because the format was meant for a generation much older than you and I. Laughing at it would be like laughing at VCR. "So stoopid, it didn't even had touch screens" meanwhile it's the precursor of many stuff you watch everyday.

+DaFuqMan Yeah, I've been watching season 1 recently and I noticed that sometimes the laugh track messes up emotional moments. (Season 1 in general was a lot heavier, I'm realizing - I guess as the show went on, it got away from that). There are a few times in the early episodes where a character says something that's probably more deserving of an "awwwww" moment, but instead you hear laughter, which just kind of makes it seem like the 'audience' didn't get what was really going on.
It'd be nice to watch friends without a laugh track, but you'd need to edit the show quite a bit so that there weren't these awkward pauses. It'd probably give it a feel closer to Arrested Development or something, with jokes coming in so quickly you might miss some of them, but that'd be kinda cool.
+Joponyhere if they made these knowing there was no laugh track it would have been a smoother transition between the dialogue. I know you know that but just saying.This is definitely weird. It'd be cool to see them act knowing there is no laugh track and compare.

This is why a series like The Office is truly funny. If you're laughing, it's because it's actually funny, not because you're doing it because you hear laughter.
Friends, Seinfeld, most other sitcoms are downright cringe-worthy without the laugh track.
It is cringe because of the pauses bruh, has nothing to do with the comedy. Also the same is true in reverse, watch The Office with a laugh track, it doesn't fit well and detracts from the show.
Friends is actually funny even without laughter, it's only unsettling because of the long silent pauses that kill humor. It's funnier than Office sorry

pacing seems off, but when you compare it to Big Bang Theory you really see the difference in both line-delivery and comedic timing, there's enough subtle expression, movement and good delivery to make friends work regardless. whereas Big Bang Theory just feels dead.

And also based on previous circumstance and dramatic irony for the audience. Like you have to know the context from the rest of the episode and previous scenes to get the jokes. Kind of an odd choice for an experiment like this.

I think Friends is a funny series. But taking out the laughter track makes these characters seem much more tragic. I would love to be friends with someone like Phoebe. But in the no laughter world, I think I would avoid her. She causes awkward silences, and none of them see the funny side.

I think friends is honestly one of the shows that pulls of the laugh tracks the best. I feel like most of the time they try to make the pauses as natural as possible or have the characters talk over the laugh track.

Yeah, the only off putting factor is the wait times. This is a solid scene of jokes that bounces between all of the characters. It's still funny. Unlike TBBT where it seems like they are just horrible to each other and the jokes are so bottom tier comedy.

Unlike a lot of people these days, I don't mind them if the comedy and actors are good. Friends is light years ahead of TBBT, laugh track or not.

Mostly because I don't really think Friends is funny whatsoever. I'm not really a fan of subjective analysis but comedy is the ultimate form of subjective entertainment. Hence why you think Friends is funny regardless of the laugh track and I think Friends is dull regardless of a laugh track at well. My point being, both TBBT and Friends are horrible without a laugh track. To claim one is actually fine whereas one is terrible is simply coming from a place of bias.

Well no. Because they are acting in accordance with a laugh track. If they did not plan for the laugh track, it would be much smoother and funny. Comedy is 99% about timing, which is completely lost in this edit.

I like the pace, it sounds like a realistic conversation. Much better than shows like HIMYM with 2x speed dialogue trying to squeeze in as much as they can in 20 min. Friends doesn't have to do that to be memorable, the simple scenes is what makes it iconic.
This makes me appreciate even more Malcolm in the middle.

Well they tape a scene like a million times so they pick the best laugh plus if u can't hear the talking over the laugh then they pick a machine to play a quiet one

yea i saw a behind the scenes thing, and in it, jennifer said a joke and the audience laughed and you couldnt hear the rest, so the put in a machine laugh so t would be quiet when she talked.
