Thank you! I've been a fan of his since LANDSCAPES. I got to meet him a couple of times. My parents and I were lucky to get to take a beautiful antique wooden boat to an island breakfast with him and told him how we liked to canoe the rivers singing his songs. He signed my guitar and held onto photos of my artwork. As a kid, I did a drawing of the album cover with his head as the top of the tree and a few years ago my parents brought it to a show and Valdy held it up on stage. He's the BEST!
Valdi was the headliner at my very first high school concert, at Northwestern Secondary in Stratford, ON back in 1972. Rock And Roll Song, Simple Life and Yes I Can have been among my favourites ever since. I got to meet Valdi at the 2016 Kitchener Blues Festival and thanked him for being part of the soundtrack of my life. Thank you for showing us the way with the guitar (how about Simple Life?). Cheers.
I woke up last night and had to learn this song. Thanks you played it with a lot of heart. My guitar teacher Sherm Sheldon used to tour with Valdi and has a lot of respect for his playing. Now I wonder if I can sing it as well as you do. We'll see. Thanks again.
I am proud to say that I have a copy of the "Best of Valdy" songbook that includes this song. Your rendition is substantially accurate, although there are some differences. Notably, in a few places, Valdy follows D chords with D/C (ie. adds 5th string 3rd fret) and only introduces the Em in the second verse. The first use is after the G (e.g. on "mood" and "Thank God"). Things get more complex after those passages: [G] Don't give me songs [D/F#] about [Em] freedom and [A7sus] .... [Em] don't play me [A7sus] song at [D] [D/C] [G/B], no sixth string. finally the song ends with D7 followed by chords using the D7 form on frets 4 and 3 and at last, D
Great lesson Marty as always. That song was part of the sound track of my youth too! Another Canadian classic folk song is The Farmer's Song by Murray McLauchlan, I would love to see a lesson for this song if you have time. Thanks Marty!
Nice....good version you do it well.......sure brings back memories......saw the Hot Rocks Tour at the Jubilee Auditorium in Edmonton, my brother in laws brother played bass on the tour, so I got to meet him....humble and very nice man.....not to mention an icon to me in Canadian music.....
Hey Marty, it's been a few weeks but I haven't deserted ya, I'm still checking every Thursday. This is a great version of the song Rock and Roll Song plus I really like your version of "Will the Circle be Unbroken" and also "Heart of Gold". I'm glad you included the harmonica part, that's essential to that song, wouldn't be the same without it. Keep um' coming. The winters are long and cold here in Newfoundland which translates into a great time to stay home and play guitar and learn new songs.
+John Mason Thanx Johnny, You are a good fella to keep checkin' in, It's nice to know I've got a buddy like you out there, thanx for all the comments, as always the best of luck to you and take care to you and yours

fun song, Marty. Only I kept hangin' up on you playing that Em instead of the A at the turnaround 😅
E Minor chord is totally unnecessary, sorry Marty
