No 12 at the 19 minute mark ( try scorer) is my uncle - Mark Taylor. He played in a couple of tests in the Grand Slam. He ended up staying in the UK and captained the London Wasps for a few years. He’s still in England.

Many years later Graham Mourie the ABs captain of the 1978 grand slam stated that this AB team had its limitations particularly at full back, goal kicking, tall lineout forwards (exception Haden), and in scrummaging. Yet for all that they won 17 out of 18 games and became the first AB team to complete the grand slam. Coach Jack Gleeson and Mourie both had superb rugby brains and managed to overcome the shortcomings in this AB team into a tactically winning side.

"With conditions more suited for possum hunting" a real kiwi comment when describing the scottish test, great stuff

I was up watching this game early in the morning NZ time. I smiled when NZ won this game no matter how they did it. Even though Andy Haden did that line out act and so did Frank Oliver but the penalty was actually against the Welsh Lock leaning his hand on a All Black shoulder in that line out.

McKechnie wasn't originally selected for the 1978 UK tour (he was not even selected for the home series against Australia) he only came in to replace Bevan Wilson who was injured just before the NZ party left for the UK and had Bevan Wilson not pulled out of the 1978 Grand Slam tour through injury Bevan Wilson would have been the first choice full back for the tests and the weekend games while Clive Currie would have been the midweek full back

Made no difference if the penalty was for the Welshman launching himself off Olivers shoulder. Maybe Haden drew the Refs attention where the Welshman may have got away with it otherwise. I had no idea there was an actual real infringement until seeing this video.

Out smarted the Welch if you ask me. There have been *more despicable* acts in a game of rugby than a dive!
which had no impact on the play, as the penalty was for another reason. Just sour grapes I reckon.

Even after 40 odd years, I'm still embarrassed that Haden had to resort to cheating tactics like that. Shame on him.

me too.and he was a a-hole also ,when he finished rugby he became a agent and I asked him if I could get a autograph off one of his clients in public and he said no,i was a teenager ,he was just been a a-hole .and yeah this is one of the worst embarrassing incidents from a all black ever .

Please rewatch the game that we saw Live at the time and get your facts correct before incorrect accusations, the penalty given had absolutley nothing to do with Andy Haden.Frank Oliver was fouled by the welsh line out jumper and it was pointed out at the time immediately by the Referee and in the 40 years since , Haden could have been serving cocktails at the time, it had no bearing on the game and the penalty was at the front of the Lineout..its a bullshit beatup story that helped the welsh feel aggrieved after another beating..

@@bmac63 I did in fact see the game live and I'm well aware of the facts but you're missing the point.
He decided to try and win by cheating because there is no doubt that he wasn't pushed from the lineout. That the penalty was awarded for something else is totally irrelevant.
From my point of view he damaged the good name and reputation of a great team.
