Input impedance in Global settings is huge! Can make or break your tone - especially if you choose 'first in chain' and place a low impedance pedal, such as fuzz, in that location. Choosing 'first selected' will automatically match the input impedance to that pedal, and not the fuzz... it basically removes the unit from the input path when not selected, which, of course, you cannot do with a classic pedal setup (without a switcher).
To clarify, a fuzz pedals input impedance is very low. Running other effects with a lower impedance gives them an anemic sound quality, so if you are set up for 'first in chain', and have a fuzz populated there, your sound will be disappointing when fuzz is not engaged. 'First selected ' automatically adjusts input impedance to an appropriate level for the first active effect.
Thank you! My church is getting me a Helix and these videos plus the fact that i own a pod go are preparing me well also helping with my pod.Really appreciate the help
Thank you. This is a good no-nonsense tutorial. Just the right amount of silliness to break up the monotony of the subject matter without making the video too long. The fact that you got through all of it in 34 minutes while still properly explaining all of the details is impressive. A lot of the big Helix youtubers would’ve taken twice as long or had split it up into several long vids.
I've owned a helix LT since launch, and good god did I just learn so much. Took me a while, but boy do I understand a lot more now. Thank you for the work
Been a PodGo user for a few years. My Helix will arrive in a few days. Been watching vids in preparation. You did an excellent job with these explanations. I will save this to use as a reference while I am getting my new Helix up to speed. Thanks so much!!
Unknowingly came across another Scott Uhl video that answered all of my super in-depth questions. All trails lead back to this channel at various points in my life hahaha
I just left a coment, but i need to tell you that this 34 minutes have being perfect for me and for shure im gonna watch it a lot more times. Thanks thanks and thanks, you broke it 💪💪
Long time Helix user and just discovered your channel. Thanks for this posting, def worth any Helix user's time. I realized going through the settings that there's a newer setting now, with the 3.5 update, in "Preferences" now, which is called "Link Dual Cabs". The only thing I could find about it so far is that if you have it set to "on", you can still use 2 mics in different positions, but it's on just one cab of choice. If I'm wrong one that, please correct me.
I made it to the end > < Probably one of the more if not most helpful Helix videos I’ve watched. The delay transparency was one thing I didn’t think of and you answered other questions I didn’t even know I had Definitely gonna stalk your other videos - especially regarding midi
Hi Scott, I'm from the Netherlands. I 'm running a home studio, just for myself. I Liked your video about the Helix "beginners video" . And now The global settings video. Again, great explanation about the functionallities and why, and how to set things up. But, I'm not a guitarist, I have five guitars, electric acoustic, semi hollow, country, bass and two real guitar amps, but I'm a synth / piano player. My goal was / is, to have a home studio where everything is possible. I'm running Studio One from Presonus in combination with a StudioLive 64S and a NSB 32.16 AVB unit (Ethernet). And I have an old Boss GT-6, which still sounds nice. But about a year ago, I bought the Helix, cause I viewed a lot of reviews etc. I know a lot of programming synths, workstations, MIDI, so the Helix wasn't (in my opinion) that bad. But it was, I play a little bit (sorry for my English) guitar, but the Helix has so many options and routings that, for me it was difficult to understand. But your videos's made it for me, quite clear! Regards, Mark Hofland
Awesome, glad the video has helped you out! I loved the Netherlands when a band I played with had 2 tour dates there. Would love to go back some time. Cheers!
Lots of Ah ahh moments!! Biggest ones were changing my footswitch displays from dim to off, and changing my Guitar Input in global settings from line to instrument. Thanks much!! Your videos are really well put together.
Definitely the best Helix setup video I have seen. This is a one stop shop video on how to use your helix. This video will keep me from asking 1000 questions on the facebook fourm and wait for answers. Thanks for posting. I can actually understand what I am doing and start jamming now...😀
Man your videos are so informative. I've had helix lt for a year and was getting frustrated with it until I saw your videos. A lot of questions I had was answered beautifully! Thanks man and keep posting videos!
My Helix is coming this weekend, upgrading from the POD HD500X. Thanks for all this info, I'm sure this video'll be super helpful for me moving forward!
... extemely useful - thank you so much! I found out this and that for myself by "try and error", but there were quite a few things i didn't know - they're too many of them, to count them up now. I will have to reciew the whole vid, to be able to tell you ...! 🤣 Greetings from Germany from the silver fox, David 😉🦊
Best tutorial - have had a Helix for years and still don’t know how to use - leant loads from you. This thing is damned difficult to use - I still can’t dial in tones that sound as I’d like
Today I learned that you can have the helix save the tempo per snapshot or preset! This is a lifesaver if you’re playing to a click! I used to love that from the kemper but now I know I can do it with the helix!
I really need to get my brain around these options. I run normally with Preset/Snap because it's rare I need more than 4 snaps per song. And because of the power of snapshots I rarely find that I care about stomp mode. One exception is with the looper but I don't use that much. A key point about the snapshot discard option: if you are in RECALL mode and make changes to your snapshot, you can think of this as a temporary save of your changes. It doesn't actually overwrite the memory of the Helix for that snapshot unless you actually save the preset. If you decide that you didn't want to keep those changes, you simply need to switch away from that preset (or power off the Helix) and they will be lost. So I find RECALL mode is best because you don't immediately lose your edits if you forget and switch snapshots. However, you DO lose them if you go to another preset. So it's somewhat analogous to using certain apps on your computer. A lot of things are done in memory only and you have to remember to save your edits, or else they are lost when the app is closed or the PC is turned off. For example, years ago when you were in a document editor, you had to remember to manually save your edits or they'd be lost. Now most have auto-save enabled by default.
Dude, you earned this 'like'. Big thanks. I was wondering if the headphone volume could be configured as a second volume (it can). Keep up the good work.
Thank you for your Helix tutorial videos! My Helix LT is arriving next week and with how clearly you explained all of this auditively and visually, I'm sure I'll get a head start when diving in the device! P.S. you explain and show this stuff SOOO well, so you really don't need all the meme flashes in between. 😉
Nice again. I just watched 2 in a row! Recently my audio interface got damaged, so in the meanwhile I am using Helix as my audio interface (USB) to record, to hook up my studio monitors on when mixing. However, I also have a powercab hooked on via AES. as the Helix floor has so many options, I am trying to figure out when I record 2 things (I don’t know if it’s even possible): 1. Have the guitar sounding only on my powercab (while I record via USB interface). 2. Not letting anything from my DAW sounding on my powercab (I already have the studio monitors for that) Oh also, I notice like here and there pops/cracks-ish when recording with the Helix as a USB interface. I don’t see any red clipping in Ableton, nor my laptop is overworking. So it’s my first time using the helix as my main audio interface. If you know something about that, I would highly appreciate it. I will go now watch some of your other videos. I would really like to control Ableton scenes with the Helix 😃
I honestly just only use the helix direct, so I’m not sure about those. But using it to control ableton I did a video about using the helix as a midi controller here: th-cam.com/video/EJ_bCKH8rmk/w-d-xo.html
You want the Auto Impedance set to First Enabled. The legacy (pre firmware 3.00) behaviour is the default so that the update doesn't change the sound of your existing presets. Mostly it doesn't matter, because the input impedance of most pedals is pretty similar, but try putting an Industrial Fuzz first in the chain and turning it off. How does that sound? Then switch from First Block to First Enabled.
Excellent, 7 years of use and I set mine up very close to how yours is. However, I am considering going back to setting it up like a pedal board and getting away from snapshots.. ?
I couldn't abandon snapshots! I love them so much. But the Helix does have that option for you if you do want to go that route. Whatever works best for you is what you should do
@@ScottUhlMusic - Oh yea, I have used snapshots religiously since they arrived. I am playing a lot more bass and acoustic guitar now, each of which require only one preset for my songs sets. But it’s easy enough to jump into pedalboard mode regardless of how global is set. Thanks agin for the video - great job!
Excellent video thanks so much. I’m using my Helix with line 6 stagesource through line 6 link digital. I understood it has to be on digital output S/pdif and the sample rate should be at 48khz ? 😅 🙏
Thanks so much for your video Scott. Do you prefer a flat response powered speaker over a traditional (say Fender or Marshall) amplifier when connecting the Helix?
Because I’ve owned a Helix since 2016, I’m too embarrassed to say how much I learned from this video. There’s still so much that this thing can do that I never knew about or used. It’s almost too powerful, because all the options can cause “decision paralysis” as you keep diving deeper and trying to perfect your setup.
bro! I’ve had this thing since 2019 and I’m just diving into all the capabilities. I’m a plug and play guy! I Buy patches and hope the sound guy will make me sound good! haha My resolution for this year is to learn this thing better!
Thank you, - I see you now have both the Helix Floor and the Stomp. I am curious to tap a bit from your experience with them..... In which situations (gigs) would you bring the Helix Floor and to which situations would you instead bring the Stomp XL (the new one)?
I only have the stomp, not the xl. Almost all of my gigs I bring my HX stomp and go with just my main 4 tones that I need. If I play with a band that needs a lot more fx I’ll bring the full helix. But most of the time I just need, clean, overdrive, distortion, and boost and I’m good to go. With my original music I do have a lot more Fx, But I midi map everything so every song has its own preset since I never have to touch it and the computer sends midi commands to the stomp to change presets and sounds. The stomp really is my main workhorse.
Great video, Scott! Thanks! On my channel, I make and demo step sequencers and HELIX is all I use for effects. This will definitely be of help. Seems like Helix doesn’t get its due; I love mine.
This tutorial is highly informational. My Helix is arriving tomorrow. I may have only a couple of hours to get it set up before Praise Band Rehearsal. This video has already helped me greatly. I play for a big church, my amp miked. The Helix I need to go through all genres of gospel. Traditional, Rock/pop, Contemporary, etc. Playing through my 7 string Charvel and Gretsch Black Panther, until a pick up a Variax soon ....
Scott, first off, thank you again for making these videos, but I have a question. Full disclosure I am brand new to the Helix and power cab/so still have a learning curve going on but I think it is going ok. My question is I have a power cab plus and am running a digital cable to be able to make presets and have the ability switch between different speaker choices. My issue is with the cabinet facing me and making sure have the green to yellow light going I have to say it is not impressing me at all. Again I am new to this and have been a tube amp guy my whole life and for me to buy the helix is going to be for live play with an amp environment behind me with powercab. Are there tricks to getting the cab to sound better? I know thats a loaded question. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
Thanks for watching. “Make it sound better” can be many different things. I honestly never use it with a cab and only go direct personally, so I’m not sure I’m the right guy to help with that either. I know that other channels use the helix with a cab, so that might be more helpful tbh 👍

Interesting, so, its safer to just keep the first enabled settings on?
