I just LOVE you! You are so honest when you do art. You crack me up…”OMG! That was an accident! OH NO,,,” I love it! Your art is ALWAYS amazing, and you are an outstandingly exceptional teacher! Oh and I love BC too! ❤😂
I came to watch this after the Charvin water soluble pastel demo this morning, having 0 experience with pastels. What a wild ride! It ended up looking like right after the clouds part after a wet spring storm in the Rockies.
I primarily paint with Sennelier as they were budget friendly for a beginner. I have random Blue Earth, Terry Ludwig and just bought two sets of 20 of Jack Richeson. I have Rembrant and Grumbacher, no longer available. Ihave the 96 set of Nupastels. I create under painting and also final marks with those. I'm trying to go back through all your videos. I love what you bring.
@artprof there are many brands I haven't tried, but if you buy professional-grade pastels, the pigmentation will be strong. The disappointment comes with student grade or craft store purchases.
Glad to see I'm not the only one that thinks of that colour as baby poop! :D -- and exactly, so interesting to see your process, and you express all the stages and your thinking so well & helpfully!
I have to admit that I’ve never taken to soft pastel. I don’t love the chalkiness and dust. I love oil pastels, particularly the portfolio and sellenier brand (which are so expensive but so good). I hope you do an oil pastel tutorial. But maybe this will inspire me to try this medium again.
Houses in the distance with chunky pastels are really hard to do. At least I struggled when I tried. So, it was good to see how you did it. I tried with Rembrandts, and maybe I should have gone in with the very corners of a harder Nupastel to highlight. I wound up throwing the thing away. But maybe I’ll try again.
The house is owned by drug dealers who are living their cottagecore dream. As much as we all love the "family friendly" Art Prof, I just feel myself yearning for the really-sweary, not family friendly version so it can feel a bit more like the reality of the professional art studio :)) (or maybe that's just my art studio. I'm Australian, what can I say? I often think that visitors to this country must think we all have the form of Tourettes syndrome where you swear constantly when really, it's just Australian English). So, you obliterated the house? Those drug dealers are coming for you. I see the pastels in their box at the beginning and I think, ooh, lovely colours. And then later in the stream I see your hands all covered in pastel and I'm: no, no, no, messy, yucky, this is just coloured charcoal!
omg THAT'S the narrative I was aiming for! 😂 Hahaha I think you would be surprised to hear what I sound like in the studio when I'm not worried about TH-cam demonetizing our videos, let's just say that "crap" gets replaced by other, uh, stronger words. 😂 -Prof Lieu
@@artprof The youtube algorithm has a very Victorian era sensibility. Unless your channel is all about the swearing such as the channel Nats What I Reckon. Then it's swear away my good man!
I only have 1 blue earth pastel and it is the absolute brightest ultramarine blue I own! It’s even brighter than my Sennelier 388, just by a hair, but still it’s just a pinch brighter. I’m so glad I have it for this reason but I don’t much love the way the pastel feels so light weight and disappears way faster than my unison Sennelier, Terry ludwig, Schmincke bright UM blues… but maybe that’s what makes it THE BRIGHTEST?
I love the vibrancy of pastels but the dust bothers my lungs (even when I am careful and use a mask while using pastels, hours later, I come back to the room without mask, and it still bothers me!). I have been doing a bit of research and it seems soft pastels can be toxic and dangerous if used without lots of care. Can you say more about this (health effects of materials) if/when you do another stream on soft pastels?
@@artprof Thanks Mia. I think it might be of interest to others also. Information about health/toxicity of soft pastels and what can be done to protect ourselves and our loved ones who may get exposed.
I bought a set of pastels marketed as "soft" , onky to find out later (through youtube) that they were more medium hard. Such a bummer. It just doesn't give the same result. I don't understand why most pastels sold here (Germany) are the square (hard) ones...

That is pretty much 100% of the time that I am working on a piece! 😂Thank you so much for your kind, thoughtful words! -Prof Lieu
This is sigh an accurate representation of how artists think and emote while working on a piece.

And then you scrub it out!! LOL! So I am not alone in struggling with pastel architecture!!
Hahaha yeah, in this case the "solution" was removing it! 😂 -Prof LIeu
This was such a journey

do you do under painting with a pastel wash?
You totally can!! - Mia, Art Prof Staff
Do you ever do an under painting, to block in your larger shapes
Yes absolutely! Especially in oil painting, blocking in the large shapes is one of the most important first steps - Mia, Art Prof Staff

I prefer Blue Earth, Great American, Mount Vision in addition to Rembrandt and art spectrum.
