    This just the video I was looking for. Will the ALWAYS KEYED ON drain the battery?

    • @JosephHunstad

      Hey, I’m glad you found this helpful. If you have something running on that always online guess it will drain the battery for sure but if it’s not connected to anything using power, it’ll be OK consider subscribing. Thanks. Joe.

    So quick question, I have a 2016 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited, it came with a winch that you have to attach a wired "in/out" control to it for it to work. Can I wire the winch directly to the battery? Thanks!

    • @JosephHunstad
      @JosephHunstad  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hello there. Great question. You absolutely can wire the winch directly to the battery, but it would be a good idea to have a switch in line with one of the leads because when you connected it’ll be on one way or the other all the time. You may have to reverse the leads if you’re changing direction.

      Thank you for a question but I’m really not sure how to answer it. Which small wire are you talking about and which switch are you talking about? Thank you, Joe.

    Do I have to install a circuit breaker or any other way to protect the electronics?
    I don’t want to fry anything.

    • @JosephHunstad
      @JosephHunstad  3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      You ask a really great question because yes, a circuit breaker in line is always a good idea. Pick the correct amperage for your application. Anything from 2 A up to 20 A but that’s usually overkill. Again the appropriate amperage is the most important thing with an in-line circuit breaker. Consider subscribing. Thanks. Joe.

    I currently have a winch quick connect installed with a keyed power source. Would I be able to run another wire to the same keyed source? Or is that unsafe?

    • @JosephHunstad
      @JosephHunstad  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I think it’d be absolutely fine. If you only use one at a time, it could get overloaded if you had them both working at the same time. Good question. Consider subscribing. Thanks. Joe.

    Can you explain the wire from solenoid to switch in more detail. I have a 7 pin rocker. Does the red run from solenoid direct to + battery and black to - battery? Where does the solenoid to switch wire connect?

    • @JosephHunstad
      @JosephHunstad  ปีที่แล้ว

      Take a look at this link I think this will help
      TWTADE Momentary Polarity Reverse Switch DC 12V 10A Motor Control 6 Pin 3 Position (ON)-Off-(ON)
      Copy and paste that in Amazon and you’ll find directions on using that momentary switch, which is good for the winch in and out functions

    Did you wire in a circuit breaker or any kind of fuse?

      Thank you very good question. Yes typically there is a fuse in line with the power cable that goes to the winch. Consider subscribing. Thanks, Joe.

    Hi Dr Joe. So I purchased the exact same winch to put on my 2024 Polaris rzr. For the lighted rocker switch, If I connect the red wire to the hot wire on the pulse bar, it won’t drain my battery? I see you have the switch hot all the time and was wondering if you’ve had any issues with the battery?

    • @JosephHunstad
      @JosephHunstad  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Really good question thank you. If the switch is hot all the time, then you can run the winch with the ignition on or off which might have value. As long as you don’t have the switch turned on it should not drain the battery. Consider subscribing. Thanks. Joe.

    • @itsbigjake5363
      @itsbigjake5363 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@JosephHunstadThanks Joe! If I wanted the switch to only be hot when ignition is ON, could I use one of the pulse bar connectors you speak of? And how would I do that since I only have 1 red wire coming from the switch? Also subscribed 👍🏻

    • @JosephHunstad
      @JosephHunstad  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@itsbigjake5363 OK then you can use one of those pulse bar connectors that has the blue wire that is the hot only when the ignition is on but it has limited amperage. In my description I think there’s a link to get those Poul Spark connectors they’re really inexpensive and they’re excellent consider that. Thanks. Joe.

    What color wire goes to which connector on the solenoid for forward- reverse? Wiring diagram? For 5 pin connector?? Simple question?

    • @JosephHunstad
      @JosephHunstad  11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Your question is appropriate. The solenoid basically has four connections to that go to the winch itself, and to the connect to the battery. There’s also another cable that goes from it to the switch, which will change the polarity going to the windchill are we need to go forward and reverse. Inside the solenoid also is a receiver that gets the signal from a remote control. If so, equipped. The color is typically to the winch are yellow and blue. The colors to the battery are black and white, and then the small diameter wires that go to the switch are usually in a cable loom to keep them together and make routing easier. Thanks for your question consider subscribing.

    I bought a jeep with a winch didn't come with the control so I bought a wireless one. The winch works but only when it wants to and I'm having difficulty figuring it out any suggestions

    • @JosephHunstad
      @JosephHunstad  4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Periodic electrical problems are a real challenge to fix. First thing I would do is replace the batteries in your remote and then check the wiring on the winch to be sure it’s all stable and solid and properly tightened. Tough one. Consider subscribing. Thanks. Joe.

    Most bus bars are on a 30amp max draw... if a winch will draw anywhere from 60-80amp, how will it not blow the fuse...?

    • @JosephHunstad
      @JosephHunstad  8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      That’s a really great question. The current basically flows directly through the solenoid to the battery. The switch that allows that to happen just completes that circuit and isn’t involved in the current flow. That’s why a greater draw for your winch as possible.

    Can I grounded to the frame close to the solenoid? Or had to be grounded to the negative side of the battery

    • @JosephHunstad
      @JosephHunstad  11 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      First of all, you can always ground to the frame. In this example I ground to the battery with a large diameter cable just to be sure I’ve got really good electrical flow to the winch. Consider subscribing. Thanks Joe.

    How does the little switch get it's power ?

    • @JosephHunstad
      @JosephHunstad  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey there, relaxing nature. Thanks for your question. When the switch is turned on or engaged, it sends power through the solenoid to the winch for either forward or backward or reeling in or reeling out. The switch literally completes the circus so that the energy from the battery can go through the solenoid to the winch. New question consider subscribing. Thanks, Joe.

      @@JosephHunstad2 wires go to the winch ..but is the switch powered by a 3rd wire ?

    • @JosephHunstad
      @JosephHunstad  ปีที่แล้ว

      @@relaxingnature2617 so if your switch requires continuous power, such as an illuminated light, or something else than the red wire is used otherwise it’s the blue wire, which only powers the switch with the ignition is on.
