Amanda took the words right out of my mouth near the end! As I was watching, I felt this was one of the best, most interesting videos you have done because it does educate us on a farm that many of us see from the highway but know very little about! Learned a LOT! Now you guys will have to have a new series of similar farm vids: Peterson Upland (Egg) Farm, Kahuku Shrimp Farm, Aloun Farms....

You wrote exactly what I would have. Completely agree. This Farm-To-Table, whole history video is fantastic. Loved it! Would love even more like this. There are some Viet and Cambodian family owned farms on island that that grow exotic fruits and vegetables. They also sell wholesale and to the public. I try to vusit at least one when I'm on island. Hawaii has such a diverse population and with it comes diverse cuisines and cultures. Its truly the Melting Pot of The Pacific. Mahalo Amanda and Felix for taking us with you to see and learn about Sumida Watercress Farm.

I remember going on a field trip to the Sumida Watercress Farm as a kid in the 80s, but I was too young to truly appreciate it, I think. But I really liked this video. I agree with all the other folks saying this one was the most interesting one yet!
And @spang9782's idea is brilliant! I would love to see more field trips!! How about the Meadow Gold dairy where they make ice cream? (Do they even still do that here?)

Amazing tour of the "watercress patch" that my entire family grew up with. We remember this place before Pearlridge existed, and my brother even went to school with one of the family members in the 70's. Glad to see the family is still running this very important farm. Happy to know they fought off the developers to keep the farm. Excellent episode.

Oh, this is one of my favorite episodes too! I LOVE the fact that we got to see "behind the scenes" of one of the most iconic places on the island, and am so appreciative this farm is still around. Thank you to you guys for taking us along, and to Sumida Farms for sharing -- long may they thrive and be successful! 🥰 P.S. Gonna buy me some watercress next time I go to the supermarket. Another great way to cook it is in Portuguese bean soup.

What an awesome visit you both had! There is nothing better than Sumida Farms watercress. There is a distinct difference in taste and freshness. In Germany, I was ono for salted beef with watercress soup and was told that the horses eat their watercress or used as garnish. I didn't believe it until I saw the horse munching away on it on a farm. On the Mainland, the stores only sold the tops. I asked where's the rest of the watercress and was told that's how it was sold. I was making hekka and ended up getting 4 bunches of tops. Watercress is so versatile. We always had it in salads or with just dipped in shoyu. Great video guys!

Love love loved this episode!! Pearl city is my old stomping grounds and i used to pass by this place all the time! I remember the shack and the marlin tails!! I remember seeing heron like birds in the fields and the sprinklers going off. I often wondered why, but it was explained perfectly here! My mom would go to Times to buy the watercress! I love it. Blanched, squeezed out the moisture then add shoyu, sesame oil. Sometimes bonito flakes. Sometimes a miso paste mix. So good! I wish they would’ve explained the health benefits a little more , but no matter. It’s a great veg! Love that they are atill going strong. I had heard it was going to shut down soon. I hope it will thrive and continue for many more generations!! They invested in a new cooling machine, and it keeps growing. I didn’t know about the spring water sources. Amazing! Great job! Please do more like these too! So cool to see Pearl City again and the famous watercress farm thriving!!! Mahalo!!!❤👍🏿😀

Yes! As most of the other commenters have noted, this was a great episode and one of our favorites because it's very interesting and informative, and something different from the usual foodie vlog or eatery reviews. This is actually the kind of stuff I was interested in before there was sharing on the Internet, way back when we learned about things from books and TV programs and the original chefs that created Hawai'i Regional Cuisine were just getting started. I had already been interested in the history of Hawai'i and the people and ethnic cultures that make up Local Culture, including our food, so I enjoyed reading the cookbooks by Alan Wong, Sam Choy, etc., which described the history and cultural influences along with the recipes and great photos of the food. I also recommend Arnold Hiura's books, From Kau Kau to Cuisine and Kau Kau: Cuisine and Culture in the Hawaiian Islands (as well as a cookbook) I think I mentioned it once in a comment when you were talking about the origins of the plate lunch in Hawai'i or about manapua.
I also used to love the PBS special series with Hawai'i chefs and farmers, like Chef Ed Kenney's show "Family Ingredients" on PBS. I also like Chef Sheldon Simeon today because of his cultural explanations as he cooks. I remember seeing TV news or specials about the Sumida family and their watercress farm, and I have taken groups of students on tours. It's too bad Nalo Farms had to close. I'm especially interested in highlighting sustainable agriculture and locally-sourced food and ingredients to help Hawai'i become more food-independent and develop alternatives to an economy based on the tourist industry, or at least more toward more "regenerative" tourism.
OK, I guess you can tell I'm a teacher, and I don't expect you to come up with videos like the PBS or Eater series, but as others have commented, it would be great if you could have a sideline series of visits to different farms or companies that produce local products like coffee, chocolate, and beer with tours and talk story, as well as some ideas for different uses or recipes. Since Amanda & Felix Eats has become so well-known, I'm sure these kinds of businesses, in addition to the eateries would be happy to invite you to spread the word.
And one last note: I often made tofu salad with Sumida watercress, and I just took it for granted that that was how all watercress tasted, but when I went to a cooking demo at the Okinawan festival and the person cooking said they couldn't find Sumida watercress for the demo, I found out how bitter "mainland" watercress actually is! Ruined the dish for me!

We loved visiting Sumida Farm with you guys! My mother used to make abalone and watercress soup, which was so onolicious! The soup basically consists of sliced canned abalone and watercress cut up in bite size pieces. I don't hear anyone mentioning that soup anymore probably because canned abalone is so expensive. Mmmahalo!

This is one of my favorite episodes. I’d pass the farm growing up on Oahu, but never got to visit on a school tour. It was great to learn the history of the farm and the process of watercress farming. So interesting to learn about the natural springs. It’d be great to see more episodes about local farms or locally sourced foods or products.

I remember passing by the farm as a kid. Always got excited when I saw them picking the watercress. I’m in my 60’s now and watching this sure took me back. Such caring and love put into farming the watercress. I use to wonder if the watercress at the supermarket came from there. Well, now I know. Amazing video you guys!!

Amanda & Felix...I just love love. love this episode. I went to school in Pearl City, so this farm is near and dear to my heart. Thank you for that behind-the-scenes tour. It was really special, most people would never have the opportunity to see the educational aspect of this farm, and all those good watercress eats. Yum...I also love Watercress prepared many ways...Try tempura the watercress in a light batter, with a Shoyu/Mayo/sugar/black sesame seed/cayenne pepper dressing...BOMB! My other favorite is Chicken Hekka. Not many people make this dish anymore. Thumbs up!
