Yeah, sometimes its not as simple as a same day fix. Waiting for these parts takes time but Im glad it worked out in the end. Thanks for the kind support and hope you are having a week where you are!
The underneath of that board reminds me of my Commodore 64. Yie-ar Kung Fu, one of the few games I can finish on the C64. Seeing this made me realise how good a conversion it was. Thanks for uploading.
I've never seen the bottom of a C64 but can totally imagine what you mean. Those are some great memories of the game it seems and hope that 2025 brings some more fun memories for all of us!
Marvelous work on reviving this gem, Luke! Sometimes it’s easier to replace socket(s) than trying to restore them. Yie Ar Kung-Fu was ported to platforms including the MSX, Famicom, Commodore 64, etc. Some of the ports had some changes from the arcade version like the hero is Lee instead of Oolong in the Famicom version which is the one I played years ago.
Thanks as always! yeah, in case someone else gets this board in the future I would hate to have it thrown out over a bad socket. Very interesting info about the game variants though, never knew that and cool little blast then eh? Thanks again and hope you have a Happy New Year!
I played the Commodore 64 version of this game back then, but never saw this in the arcades. I remember this being a difficult game and I could never get past level 4. My brother was a little better at this game and could get to level 6, but I don't think he was ever able to pass that level. I imagine the arcade version is probably going to be even harder. A fun thing I remember about the copy of the game we had was that it bootleg and the title screen was corrupted and just showed graphical junk, but everything else about the game was fine. It had a great title screen tune also. Edit: Another thing I forgot to mention, I was always amused by the little tune that played when you lost a fight.
Hi Luke, great repair! FWIW, I was told when I was trained that when you have component leads that need bending for PCB assembly that you should hold the lead in some round-nose pliers and bend it around the pliers so the bend is some distance from the edge of the package. If you just freeform bend it, the lead will be bend right where it comes out of the package and supposedly it's more prone to breaking there. Anyway, keep up the good work saving those old boards!
Konami went to all that trouble to make a custom CPU that isn't really all that custom. Great reapir work Luke as always. Got a kick out of seeing my adapter in action! :)
Haha, thanks AF!! Resurrection of the pcb monsters here but the wait for parts is my least favorite 😫 hope you are having a good Holiday and thanks again!
Merry Christmas Luke! :) I was thinking?, with the wrinkles being more prominent underneath, may it be a byproduct of the wave/flow? soldering those 70's, 80's era traces went through? (where the board is run through a solder bath) Reminds me of the traces on the Spectrum p.c.b's too. :) A superb game by the way! I love the permutations of moves in every stick direction, proper kung-fu.
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year back at you beginner! 🎊 That is an interesting idea there about the foil like traces on the bottom, I'm not sure to be honest but very possible. That is neat about the game though. I realized that after playing this a little bit and it's really quick and fluid. Kinda shocking for such an early game but it's really cool. First time playing it too. Might have to make a gameplay on it soon but thanks again!
That's a really good point... Finding NOS or legit old stock replacements is also getting harder. Basically trying to recycle the parts I know are genuine and taking that risk with the used parts when I have to. Thanks for the info there on the speech codec, very interesting. Hope you are having a Happy Holiday
Merry Xmas Luke, another great video. What's the go with that Sega Saturn TV you use for testing? Is it something Sega released or an aftermarket product? I have never seen one.
Merry Christmas NeoGenesis! Thanks as always for watching. The tv lol, nah, those are just some random stickers I put on it 😅 Sega never released anything like this.
The 4 week fast forward. I appreciate that part. Sometimes you gotta just wait for parts to come in. Another great repair video.

One of my all time favorites. Glad you were able to restore it to its operational glory!

Another board getting the Luke Morse treatment, it's a Christmas miracle! Good to see the new amp working, waiting for parts is the worst!😅
Haha, thanks AF!! Resurrection of the pcb monsters here but the wait for parts is my least favorite 😫 hope you are having a good Holiday and thanks again!

At least the VLM5030 speech codec wasn't bad...afaik they were only used in arcade hardware and nowadays they're very hard to get.
That's a really good point...

OMG!!! Luke woooooooooooooooooooooooo!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Haha, thanks Pretparry!!!!!
I can't play Yie Ar Kung-Fu much better even with two hands. :D
Have a happy holidays lukemorse1

@lukemorse1 OK cool, I was wondering where I had been lol.
like you said that was an easy fix. but these foil lanes a bit scary :D
Wasnt that cpu the sound cpu?
