The WORST Drake Album

  • Drake released CERTIFIED LOVER BOY back in 2021 & in my honest opinion it's the worst aged album he's ever made. Even his Scary Hours 2 EP encapsulates everything great about Drake within 3 tracks better than Certified Lover Boy ever could.

Drake is the Call of Duty of rap at this point. Regular releases, with no soul or flavor or innovation, universally criticized yet still successful, and with every new release people look back on the old releases with nostalgia and respect.

I agree that CLB is Drake’s worst album. Even though upon relistening, there are more songs (namely Papi’s Home, TSU and Knife’s Talk) I liked in the album, there’s too much fat in the album. If it was 13 tracks, I would have really enjoyed it but it’s the same Drake has been given since 2016 and that’s why it’s his worse. Also, I don’t understand why Drake didn’t put any of the songs (even one) in Scary Hours 2 and laugh now, cry later in CLB because it probably would have elevated the album.

Idk what it is, but I feel like Scorpion was his worst one. I was in love with it in 2018, but there was way too much quantity over quality. Could’ve easily cut it in half and it would be top 3. I think the art of CLB is Drake’s kinda F U to the industry. How he can make whatever he wants and still have a number 1 album, break records on the billboard and streaming charts, and be nominated for multiple Grammy’s before he eventually pulled out. So even if it wasn’t as good as maybe a Take Care or IYRTITL, he’s still able to control the music industry without even trying.

I've been asking for a straight R&B album from Drake for years now, and thinking that he should listen to 40 when he says, in drake's own words, that he wants a 10-12 track 'classic' album. I thought CLB was supposed to be that, and was so disappointed that half of the album became a pseudo-gangsta cut. Drake has to stop trying to deliver both vibey and hard tracks in the same album. For a little while I felt like drake dumbed down CLB to spite Kanye’s donda, saying “you might make the better cohesive album (Donda) but my album will out sell your album by millions (CLB)” because another thing I felt was if drake really put a good effort in to try and challenge Kanye at who could make the better cohesive album and CLB still lose to donda in that aspect especially if the whole world knew that he really put in a good effort to make it his “best” album to date that that would be a bigger L than anything else so I thought he’d rather win the numbers argument than the better album argument at the end an laugh it off as him beating Kanye’s album with loosies and half hearted tracks. Some body of works don’t have replay value, just a listen straight through album. Yes, there are some skips in CLB if they were to come on, but others like IMY2 or You Only Live Twice are infectious songs that get stuck in your head long after you listen. To me that’s what makes a good album

The last great selection of music from Drake was More Life. I can argue this to the point of me being objectively right, because at the end of the day its how you feel about the music not how others on the internet make you feel about it. In my opinion a lot of the hate that came with More Lilfe was more so due to the fact that it wasn't an album, it was too long, and the whole X flow drama lmfao. Even for such a long body of work most of the songs hit. IDK how he did it, but it seems like he can't replicate that anymore. It seems as though in that point of his career he didn't need to try so hard in making music, which is very very apparent now that he does do in fact that. Shawn hit nail on the head with saying how when Drake doesn't take himself seriously we get good music. Point in case being More Life. Aruge your points because I am genuinely interested. Shawn would you consider doing a reaction to Drake's first two mixtapes? Those contain some of his best verses in terms of lyricism and I think they are slept on. They're also the only projects that we can know for certain he was writing his own shit because we actually have the notebooks he was using at the time. Along with a degrassi interview from 2004 where he's giving a tour of his house and he pulls out a bunch of notebooks from a drawer filled with lyrics and the notebooks are the exact same brand as the one that was found in Toronto with the handwritten lyrics for his Room For Improvement tape. Slept on mixtape imo.

I've never bought into the idea of Drake, like, at all. The dude always came off as pandering and unflattering. Sure, in terms of being perceived as "soft" there's some validity in him trying to dispute those claims, but my biggest issue wasn't that he was soft. In fact, my issue was that I always thought he was *pretending* to be soft.
Now, I know the argument is that people want Authenticity and when they finally get it, it's a lot more negative than people signed up for, but in the end I wasn't asking for Drake to be "authentic" or anything like that. Drake to me just doesn't have much in the way of integrity, not as a rapper, not as an artist and definitely not as a person. Which is why I find it so odd that him and his people are trying to push this whole "soft" or "emotional and sensitive" image or even as this "suave and calculated" when through out his catalogue, he's been making music that's just from the perspective of a fuck boy just making soft music to get laid.
And after everything, after the Pusha T diss, after the release of albums like Scorpion and CLB, it all just shows what I already knew about Drake. The dude's music doesn't have much of anything going on underneath the surface, and even the stuff underneath the surface, it's mostly just drama and celebrity gossip. And when he's not making that, it's just pandering love jams.
I mean, I do enjoy me a Drake track here and there. I enjoy his music but only in small doses. Not just in small doses, but in like *micro*doses. Because I just do not get much of anything out of Drake's music at all aside from maybe a vibe or a hype song here and there.

Now that I've had more years with a lot more distinguished artists who do what drake wishes he could, it all seems so vapid and fake, especially this mob boss mentality he tries to push. I think what this video highlights well is the fact that Drake really does need to stop putting out so much at once in his albums. He doesn't need double discs. He doesn't need nearly 30 sounds on a record. We hear from him every year and he doesn't exactly have that much to talk about so he stales himself out by the overexposure. I can't tell if it's a slight insecurity about wanting to retain starpower so he has to saturate himself in the music market, but dude if you're that guy, and you have nothing to prove, then like, drop a 3-4 song EP for a year and be on a handful of popular features and let that be it. See if your superstar and name recognition can withstand the lack of persistent drops.
Drake also does this quantity over quality thing because I don't think he knows which record will land for people. Sometimes he has an idea and his ears are right, but I feel that he creates so much because he doesn't know what will resonant, and I find that's a huge problem. Again, if there's nothing to prove, drop like a 3-4 song EP and let that sit with people. Hell, drop two of those a year if you're so worried. Like, this dude is Drake and he's supposed to be sitting pretty but he's clearly overcompensating for something.

I think we are definitely in an era where people aren't waiting for a Drake release any more...It's hard to ask a successful artist to go back to rapping like they're hungry but if Jay or ye showed us anything, you can still make good music and bodies of work even when rapping from a position of success and accomplishments. The problem is, it doesn't feel like he creates cohesive bodies of work anymore. He's just manufacturing tracks after tracks like a factory to see which one hits or if he can capture a wave. I know it wasn't part of this release but Tossie slide is a prime example. He's still have a his spot in the industry but I don't think he has the masses captivated like he used to. But if he puts his mind to it, he can still write great projects

*I was honestly just thinking* while listening to a CLB video.. that Certified Lover Boy could’ve been Drake’s magnum opus *IF DONE CORRECTLY* . Think about it:
You have this name that clearly feeds into his biggest self conscious factor of being perceived as “Soft” so *What If* instead of countless boring songs about the same subject.. it was instead a character study on himself - and the questions that arise from the lifestyle he’s living? Like, if he’s chasing a never ending high of sleeping with women and he’s not content with his music - where is the gratification coming from? With some unique production, better writing from Drake - he could’ve knocked this album out of the park. But instead it felt like the product of someone who is complacent after all these years at the top.

I think it was that the hype didn't match the music given. I remember that Drake was arguably the most talked-about rapper at the time and Soho had a bunch of teenagers running between Drake pop-up stores and Kanye's TLOP pop-up. For an album that was as hyped as views, I think it just had too many filler tracks. When the previous album had commercial hits like started from the bottom, features from Wu-Tang Clan, and introduced most people to Sampha, it seemed like Drake was surprising people and raising the bar for success. I think it's similar to when Chance the Rapper dropped The Big Day, it's not that the album was horrendous but the hype and expectations exceeded the material. When you consider that the previous album had Tuscan Leather, Too Much, From Time with Jhene Aiko and a song with Wu-Tang Clan, it's hard to exceed the expectations of previous work. The only artist I've seen consistently surprise people is Tyler, the Creator off the top of my head but Tyler's eye for talent is crazy when you realize he had Syd, Matt Martians, Earl Sweatshirt, Frank Ocean, and more artists under one group when he blew up.

The only reason IMO that Take Care was great was the Weeknd's contributions as a rising singer in the industry shortly after House of Balloons. Mix that with Drake's love for Rihanna and the crazy feature list that the project had(Kendrick Lamar, Andre 3000, Nicki Minaj, Lil Wayne) and you get a great Drake album. It also is crazy to think that to some extent the number of young people in the OVO camp that were working on his albums was giving a lot of their energy to drake(Roy Woods made Drama at 19, Partynextdoor got big with drake at 20), Drake's most inspired phase was working with young artists developing their sound. IMO the Chicago Freestyle was a highlight of the Dark Lane Demo tapes and I think if Drake was ever able to truly be vulnerable and reflect on his life(getting friend zoned by Rihanna who now is starting a family with A$AP Rocky, dealing with 40's declining health, starting a family, challenges of being in showbiz for most of his life/aging in show biz, what he's learned along the way) there'd be a chance to maybe want to listen to a new Drake album. If CLB is a forecast for where he sees his career I can happily say I'm fine to never hear drake as a musician again. He's doing a great job as a producer on Top Boy, his clothing brand is better than most record label merch, and he's made a bigger lane outside of music than just being an artist.

    • @ElijahLoganmaztrpeac3official
      @ElijahLoganmaztrpeac3official 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

@@romaretaylor9953 I'll respond to you directly since I want to make this clear: The weeknd's writing credits prove his influence to the song. The Weeknd had a hand in the writing process for three songs where he wasn't featured (but is credited) in the album(Shot for Me, Cameras / Good Ones Go Interlude, and Practice). I'm not saying Drake didn't do great work without Abel, but it's hard to deny that someone who is credited on 5 of 18 songs didn't play a role in the album process. I respect Drake more as a curator of music(like DJ Khaled) than as a rapper on his own, not because I dislike his music but believe that his ability to bring artists together has made incredible moments in music. If I don't include the 5 songs the weeknd is involved in, I feel that the album would sound a lot different. Inspiration isn't negative, and being inspired and making great work only bolsters the artist who inspired them by strengthening their legacy. Brent Faiyaz isn't shy about Curtis Mayfield's influence and I would argue has made great music.
Without delving into the "OVO Sweatshop" controversy, it has been clear to many that the artists that drake discovered at young ages have been able to foster an environment that allowed the writing rooms and studio sessions that showed an inspired, motivated Drake. This is positive because comparably Michael Jackson had A LOT more help on his music, and most pop stars just by songs from songwriters to create a somewhat cohesive album. I find it interesting that you highlight NWTS due to the fact that there was a lot more Drake Writing than Take Care, and once "If you're reading this, it's too late" came out Drake used a reference track for Legend as well as taking Wednesday Night Interlude, which Partynextdoor has showed frustration about in interviews. My point isn't that Drake isn't talented but has not been able to be inspired musically as when he was rising to stardom. I think that Dark Lane Demo Tapes showed his inspiration coming back(Especially with the song with Giveon), but the challenge as I see it is Drake's inability to be vulnerable with his audience. I'm not expecting every artist to be as transparent as Kanye or Frank Ocean, it does become important as an older artist to become more vulnerable so that fans can see into your personal growth in the time since you first achieved mainstream success. I'd argue that The Weeknd has progressed greatly and kept a sense of vulnerability in his music, but at times it's hard to tell if Drake is playing the role of a rapper on some projects vs giving us his emotions and feelings. I think Drake is talented but hasn't applied his talent as much in newer music, and would benefit from either working with more artists on newer work(I think Brent Faiyaz co-writing some new Drake songs would make incredible music) or taking the chance at dissecting his career the way Pusha T did since that beef exposed some of Drake's challenges in Drake's ascent to fame. I think it actually shows less respect to downplay incredible collaborations because not many artists are able to build something greater than the artist might create on their own. It's easier to see influence and collaborations as an important step in fashion when you can look at Pharell and Nigo's work to build BBC/Ice Cream or the ways Gianni Versace found himself making Tupac looks but if you consider the individual contributions of Syd, Matt Martians and Steve Lacy bring together to create The Internet you can see how collaborations are a benefit, not a drawback to the process of making music.

Champagne poetry was good until I heard the song he sampled it from and I prefer it and maybe that’s a subconscious desire to be different, but, i think it was the breakfast club saying essentially that he’s trying to surf the wave when he is the wave just sums it up perfectly. No experimentation, no out of the box thinking. Yes that sells records and gets radio time but in 5 years you’ll listen to it and won’t remember a word. He repackages what he’s been talking about for the past 5 years and talks about the same things. That’s why CLB was not good at all, he didn’t really open up in depth, he just chose to chase after hits and what sounds good on tiktok.

Thank you!!!!! He’s been getting a pass because of who he is the music doesn’t sound genuine and it’s been like this since More Life for me. The thing with artist like Cole and Kendrick is with each album you grow with them and leave with more appreciation then when you started listening. With Drake it’s like he’s scared to at least try something different. You’re Drake niggas gonna meat ride whatever you do try something different you have nothing to lose. The bars and majority of the songs on CLB were corny, repetitive and lazy. Plus if you think about it he’s closer to 40 than 20 and he’s sounds like a creepy dude. He’s 36!!!😭😭😭😭

No he just turned 35. That’s mid point, sorry not every 35 year old is 50 mentally everybody is different. I’m not a meat rider but Drake was never in the same lane as Kendrick as an artist he can’t just become a woke pro black rapper at this point it’ll look hella fake. I loved more life because he did what he did on views in a much better way. Plus j Cole got a lot of hate for 4yeo and to a lesser extent KOD until people saw them for what they were
