How to Make Paper Rope or Cord

  • Yes you read that right I did say paper rope. Paper after all is made from tree fibers and while it is not the the fastest cording to make it is fun, uses recycled materials and is totally junk for our junk journals.

    Hi, thanks for the video. I don't know if you realize it, but the way you are twisting, is the way Senegalese twists, an African/or African-American hairstyle is done. If you search on TH-cam "how to do Senegalese twists," you'll see what I mean.
    Because I watched a lot of those videos , I have a suggestion for an easier, though not necessarily faster, way of doing this. Take some string, or cotton twine, and wrap it around two legs of a chair, or the back of a chair. You want to have room between the string, and your fingers, because you need to be able to manipulate the paper. Tighten the string or cord around the chair back so that it's taut. After you cut the paper into strips, open it lengthwise, and then drape it over the string. Depending on how long the paper is, or how you're going to use it, you can either fold it so they're equal length on both sides of the string, or uneven. If uneven when you twist, it will gradually narrow, and that can be pretty. Do the same twist sequence that you did with the paper in the video. Do an entire row, so that the twists fills the space, or do as much as you need. When you're done, untie or cut the string from the back of the chair, and then slide your Twisted paper off.
    Doing it this way you can use both hands, twisting both legs of the twist at the same time. Also you don't have to use one hand to keep this paper stable.
    Good luck. I feel really inspired. I've been looking for paper twine or cord online. Because of supply issues, lots of things are out of stock, or not the color I need. This way I can make my own. Thanks again!

    I started doing this a week ago, before i daw your video, remembering that i was taught this method for nettle cordage originally. I screw the paper up first then undo it snd it makes it softer and easier to twist.

    Thank you for your precise and necessarily detailed instructions, I really enjoyed your lovely calm voice and generous style. I now have all the information I was after and more, I'm now even more inspired than when I got here! This was Thank Goodness! the first link I clicked when I searched for paper rope, you saved me from spending hours down a rabbit hole of boggy blogs and less well put together videos. Now with all that time I saved I'm going to check out what other wonderful things you do. Thank you for sharing so valuably. 💓

    Usually when we do the reverse wrap we start with a single piece with a loop folding the material in half but I really like the thickness of the cordage that you're showcasing here. These are outstanding. Cordage is essential for survival purposes. This is like an urban Bushcraft lesson for me. And you really don't have to show much I just wanted to see if paper would manipulate the same way that other materials do.

      try cutting your paper on the diagonal and if it is still ripping you might need to find a lighter weight paper until you get the hang of it

    When I teach Bushcraft because I use this for bow string on deer sinew or plant fibers I teach people pinch scissor twist.

    I rarely watch TV or movies, but I could be making twisted paper ropes while watching TH-cam! The rare times I am upstairs watching something on the television, the lighting isn't good enough for most projects, but this one wouldn't need good lighting

    • @TanyaMcGuire
      @TanyaMcGuire  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I rarely actually watch TV just videos and such most of the time as well. and yes once you get the hang of the twisting you do not need to really see it

    How interesting .something new to learn. Coloring it would be interesting also . Have you ever taken three pieces after twisting it and braided it ? Thanks so much.

  • @irinadalah9089
    @irinadalah9089 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    "too thick and too heavy" for what? for some large decorations, on upcycled furniture, that thickness is exactly what I need.
    "twist this away from us" and "the individual pieces we twist away from us, [...] and then we twist the two towards us" - why is that? will that give more stability to the yarn - that is keep it from unraveling? or will it make it stronger? or just for aesthetics?
    I love the fact that you bring pieces together without glue - haven't tried it yet, but I'm sure glue will make stiffer bits through out the length and make the yarn less pliable.
    thanks for sharing - I was looking for a tutorial like this for years!!

    • @LisaMyEclecticLife
      @LisaMyEclecticLife 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I have not ever tried it myself. I have seen people spin it on a spindle, but never on a wheel, but I don't see why it wouldn't work. Give it a try and let us know.

    Do you think this can be a bag handle? We're doing an eco-bag and I'm looking forward for this paper rope to be our bag handle, but I'm not sure if it can be a bag handle tho

    • @TanyaMcGuire
      @TanyaMcGuire  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I would worry that it would get damp and fall apart it is pretty strong and maybe braided it would work but it is not going to hold up for long I don't think. Let me know how it works if you try it.
