A father and mother who can lead by example and teach the kid how to accomplish hard task are what gives a kid confidence. I mean, considering the damage some octopuses have wreaked on multi-million dollar aquaruim facilities staffed with specialists these guys honestly got off pretty lightly and they learned a valuable lesson in the process. Seems like a win to me.
To me an octopus is like an orca, it should not be in a tank. They are highly intelligent creatures and deserve to be free.

Most octopuses that you can purchase are actually caught from the wild and then sold to keep as pets. There is very little regulation. So there is a high chance Terrance was already pregnant when she was essentially taken.
I was gonna say that’s the only way I can think she had babies because looks like there are no other octopuses in the tank.

@EM-mw2qr better than become takoyaki, they're cute, they're intelligence, but they're also delicious 😭 but octopus usually rapidly aging and die after mating (for male) and after the egg hatch (female) so maybe become takoyaki is not that bad?
@@AyumieAyumia-ld7is Being eaten is probably not as bad as being mailed somewhere, stuck in a dark envelope for days with no food, all alone unable to even move, plus starting to give birth. And then the poor thing lives in a tank all alone for the rest of it's life, being gawked at and called an alien by a weird rich kid. I had a lovely coworker who used to eat small portions of octopus and before she ate it she would very respectfully say "I thank God for putting this octopus in the ocean". It's much less cruel and more natural to eat them than it is to torture them for the rest of their life like the people in this video are doing.

Sad Fact: The female octopus lays her eggs and dedicates the remainder of her life to protecting them. She stops eating, slowly starves, and once her offspring are ready to hatch, she dies. This self-sacrifice ensures the eggs are safe from predators, giving the next generation a chance to survive.
This is true, but they stop going out to hunt - if food is provided (captivity) I believe they do eat and live.

Free food from a trusted source would’ve bypassed that issue. Still humans only know so much about ocean creatures. For all we know it in the wild there could be females that went thru several litters before dying.

Yes! It is definitely questionable he is teaching his sons to think wild animals are toys that can live in a box. They didn't care about the animal at all. An octopus swims miles a day! And everyone is thinking is really cute. If it's too be eaten, at least they die without suffering. But this is a lifelong suffering.

No, an octopus doesn't belong in a tank in someone's house as a pet. It's a wild creature and irregardless of the hazards, it's just the circle of life. This dad is not teaching his kid to have respect for wild creatures, rather that it's okay to capture them and keep them as pets. If the kid's so enamored with them, take him to an aquarium, buy videos and books, support his interest but don't keep a creature in an unatural environment. It's cruel, plain and simple.

Best way to get your kid to respect creatures, especially the ones they adore, is by letting them view them in the wild. Or research them online. Let them know that just because you love an animal doesn’t mean you should own one, they belong in the wild.

I feel the same way about all WILD animals. They should be left in their habitats unless they need medical care or can’t survive in the wild. Otherwise taking an octopus out of the ocean, is wrong. And breeding them, is wrong. They don’t belong in tanks. They are incredibly smart!
There is a big difference between pets and wild animals. Many pets wouldn’t survive without help from humans. I hope you do realize that. Not sure what kind of point you were trying to make with that question.
So yes, wild rabbits. Should be left alone, wild ferrets, should be left alone. Domesticated pets? Seems a bit cruel to leave them out on the streets, since domesticated means it’s not their natural habitat 🙂

If you'd meant "non-pets", then you should have said "non-pets". The problem with that is that, by definition, any animal kept as a pet becomes a pet - including an octopus. So what you're objecting to - I suppose - is the keeping of non-traditional pets. Or something. Look, I too agree that it's probably a pretty lousy idea to keep an octopus in a small enclosure, but if you're going to argue that all animals belong in the wild you're going to raise some eyebrows. IS this a "great story"? Seems like a lesson about not keeping wild animals as exotic pets. Octopus are very smart and notorious escape artists. I think that lets us know their opinion on being kept as pets.
I think they took really good care of the octopus seeing how it had eggs and the eggs hatched and they didn’t kill anything. I think they are good people and it worked out cause an expert helped to house the babies. It was a family bonding time and a memorable experience for his son. Don’t need to be so negative…

I had a tank as a kid and went through the trial and error of hatching and raising angelfish. If you dont get them out fast enough after hatching, mom eats them. Then, I had to have tanks and containers to raise them big enough to survive and also raise fresh brine shrimp to feed them. They hatched in upside-down plastic soda pop bottles in my moms kitchen. There were tubes, water, salt, fish food, slime, and the occasional dead fish. God bless parents who can allow thier children special hobbies and have the patience to wade through the trial and errors with them. I didn't become a fishologist, but I definitely learned skills for life having that hobby. Besides, the fish were absolutely fascinating to me. I loved them ❤

Knowing how intelligent they are, the father should have explained to the son that they should be free and not kept as pets in small tanks, as they don't like it any more than we would like being kept as a "pet" in a small room for the rest of our lives.
Lol. Let's be real here. How big is the tank that you live in? How well balanced is your existence? If we are honest, we all exist as if we are a pet living in a small tank. Sure we could venture out far into the wilds but we don't. We do the same thing day in and day out. Work then home to watch TV or play on the phone then to bed for more work the next day. If they give her a safe home/cave and toys to play with she is probably more than satisfied being the alpha predator in the world she has control over. She obviously felt safe/satisfied enough to last her eggs there. Octopus store sperm in order to produce offspring when they decide. I would propose that her decision to produce offspring is a good sign that she is living a good life.

You're conflating monotony with actual freedom. It's one thing to go through the same routine daily, it's another thing to be forced to do it in a small room for the rest of your life.
You're also conflating reproduction with "good" conditions. You make do with what you have and has no bearing on the true quality of life. Using your logic, you could say that coed slave and prison camps must be good if people chose to have children in such conditions.
There was a case of an African boy being kept as an exhibit when the world allowed such things. He eventually committed suicide.
@@Mlogan11 we don't have the opportunity to decide when to give birth after reproducing. The process is automatic. Our only method of choosing is abstinence from sex. I have a home I own but spend 99% of my time in one room. While I am not forced into a box, I have settled into a box with toys. Everyone ends up in a small box with toys. It just happens faster for some than others. Calling the condition monotony doesn't change the reality of it. Everyone lives their life in tiny boxes. Some have more boxes than others. You have your home box. A work box. Lots of people don't move past those two boxes. Some maintain a friend's hangout box for a little while but those don't last. "Freedom" that you mention is a term that makes you feel better about your prison. The reality of the immense number of "permissions" you have to get to do anything you decide is soul crushing. If you are so free then take a 6 month excursion to anywhere out of your country but do it without using any overlord permissions. Then tell me again about your freedoms and the "box" that you don't live in.

The eggs were probably fertilized because the mom was taken from the wild. Parents, I know no one likes to say "no" to your precious hatchlings anymore--but don't keep these majestic sea creatures as pets. They're so intelligent and don't deserve a life in captivity. I know Oklahoma is boring and by the looks of your house you've got money to spare. Take the kid on a trip to a preserve. Just... don't.

Or consider the large variety of fish bred for captivity that can have a great quality of life in a large tank. These are fish that have no place in the wild to begin with and there are plenty of breeders interested in giving them great chances. Octopusses and most blowfish are cruel along with any other fish you have to catch wild, it ruins their lifespans.
I disagree with not keeping fish as pets because they are extremely intelligent and goldfish can form amazing bonds with owners.

I love how dad promotes his son's passion. However, this particular situation is immoral. Our household mantra is 'IF YOU LOVE IT, LET IT GROW' (our other mantra is 'love doesn't lie'). Just because you adore something does not mean you can trap it. Wild animals belong in the wild where they thrive. Their home is within NATURE not some humans tank. ❤

Wrong. Octopi prefer captivity and make great pets as they recognize their caretakers and play games with them. Some even go so far as to show physical affection.

How do you know that's not what the kid wants to be I mean most Veterinary people who have become veterinarians have had pets I mean how old are you supposed to learn about something that you're really into unless you can actually experience it and learn and study and do the things you need to I mean it would have been more cost-effective probably but the lifelong experience and memories and bonding that he gets with his family and his father because of this I mean kind of outweighs everything else

They thought it was a boy for a long time, but the truth was the truth and it’s genetically a girl. No one is upset, they originally were mistaken by calling it something different than its DNA, it’s an octopus, they learned it was a girl when she gave birth. Their belief was proven wrong. They don’t seem to care so let’s not turn this common section to something it isn’t.
You are correct that after a male and female octopus mate it isn’t very long before the octopus parents both die. This process is called “deterioration.” Sadly, that’s the next lesson to be learned.

I find it kind of hypocritical that these individuals bought an octopus, but are unwilling to sell their babies to other individuals. It’s not like they were professionals or even properly prepared for challenge.
That little boy has such a passion for this, he actually cried when his dad said they were getting an octopus. We should all think that to our childhoods and think of that thing that we love so much and couldn't imagine not having or doing. Mine gymnastics.
But I never had a threat of not getting it or being able to do that thankfully, so it's difficult to imagine a child having such strong feelings towards something.❤

Let’s go through it, if you have dogs, we you cage them. If you have a cat you cage them, maybe inside a house, but it’s a house sized cage the same. You cage them because you care, if you didn’t, they would run out and get run over or get eaten or taken by animal control. Also, dogs especially benefit from having their cage as their safe space at times. Silly argument all together is what I’m saying.
The guy shouldn’t have an octopus, but caging can be caring, and the cage can be house sized.

@@Miss.Leading my argument is you can cage something because you care. I cage myself, and pay an outrageous amount of money to do so. I’m not one of those cool people who want to live off the land and all, I prefer my cage.

I was impressed with how much this family obviously cares and loves each other and how intelligent little man is and how thankful he was when his dad told him he would get him his dream pet. I mean little boy was in tears and I guess I'm a softy and a sucker lol but I never had a dad do anything for mebut lie anyhow there is ALWAYS 2 SIDESand a good and a bad in every decision right?

The names of the babies had me in stitches. Of course the comment section is riddled with people complaining about these people doing what they enjoy doing. But I found it to be a great story about a father doing awesome things to make his kids happy. Nothing wrong with that.

what's wrong with it is that octopi are highly intelligent, and they understand being in captivity. octopi try to escape cages and tanks constantly because they are smart enough to hate it. it is cruel.
@@dopeasfruck They weren't smart enough to not get caught. So there's that. Not to mention, with the right stimuli, it could be happier in a tank vs. not.
Also, if they hadn't caught it, it could have ended up something else's meal shortly after. So they might have done it a huge favor.
You're worried about the happiness of an Octupus, but fail to see how happy this father has made his child. I think the Octopus is smarter than you are.

and praises his dad as his hero. It’s not the octopus or what it costs, son wants it and dad made it happen. Spends time and teaches him beyond providing, bond. To all the fathers who devoted themselves to their children. 🫡

This is truly going to great strength in a family. I don’t know a lot about octopus’, but I could see this kids curiousity and love for an animal and the dad really making what could seem like a very big deal feel like a small one and embrace it. ❤

Retired teacher in Hawaii, once took a National Geographic all about octopi to a 4th grade classroom & discussion started "who had seen an octopus". One girl & one boy told stories about fishing with uncle or dad, told to "grab it" as it wrapped around her arm & released ink. I love this kid. Future marine biologist. Great dad to support this boy's octopus hobby & interest.
