What makes this scene even more heartbreaking was that things were gonna change after this. Shigaraki’s mom and grandparents finally stood up to his dad. They were gonna start protecting him. We got a glimpse of what could have been before it was destroyed.

Kotaro only hit Tenko once in his life and he hit him for a reason. He snuck into his study room and took the photo of his deceased mother. Even I would be pissed if someone did that. And he was repressing Tenko because he didn't want to lose his son. Tenko seemed quirkless since his quirk came late. Unlike Deku's mom he didn't support Tenko because he knows what happens to Heroes. He has already lost his family once.

Tenko was 5 when his quirk manifested in the way we see now, but that's a year after most kids discover their quirk. And the way his family reacted to his "allergies" gives me the idea that it'd been happening for enough time for them to consult multiple doctors but he wasn't born with them. He only ever itched at home, which is where emotions ran high, and we see that his quirk manifestation was ultimately triggered by a strong sense of hatred. We only really see his scratching when he's agitated, and knowing Shiga that's when he wants to use his quirk the most.

Same! I felt so bad for him! At least the mom still loved him and wanted to help him after what she witnessed, but it was so devastating to see them all die! That would traumatize anyone, especially a 5 year old. For me the worst part was the dog’s death and how much I related to Tenko. I lived in an abusive household for years and when I was eleven, I remember looking at the people who were passive and did nothing to stop the abusive and thinking those same words, “I hate them all.” For me, that was the most disturbing part of the episode. This flashback was so devastating and amazingly done! His sister was really pretty and she looked so much like Nana! Even though she was a snitch who betrayed him, its still a shame the brother/sister superhero team never happened! I think besides Tenko, the mom suffered the most because she was married to an abuser, watched him hurt her son, tried to stop him, but couldn’t, wasn’t able to stop her son’s suffering, then she watched her daughter die, then was murdered by her own son. It’s so tragic because this episode made his desire to be a hero so similar to Deku, that it’s easy to imagine an alternate timeline where he became a hero and didn’t kill his family. The dad did try to kill him after what he did (even though it was clearly an accident since he was 5, and the kid was clearly traumatized), but the mom, to her credit, seemed like she wanted to help Tenko when she reached out to him, even after what she witnessed. The worst part was the dog’s death. No one can change my mind. For me, the most disturbing part was the fact that I related to Tenko when he said he hated them all. I lived in an abusive household for years and was surrounded by people who were passive like his mom and grandparents and I remember thinking to myself on one of the worst nights that I hated everyone in my family. The fact that I related to Tenko so much is what scares me the most.

I don't feel bad for Kotaro.
I understand why he turned out this way and there is a small part of me that feels a little sympathy, especially if he saw Nana continuing her job as a hero after leaving him, but he chose to abuse Tenko and people like him are the worst.

The anime unfortunately cut a possible future reveal from the manga. In the chapter of this flashback, we opened with Tenko's mom apologizing to a mystery man who brought Tenko home. We don't see his face, but his physique suspiciously resembles AFO which makes it almost certain that AFO gave Decay to Tenko to jumpstart the tragedy and the prick might have had a hand in nobody trying to check on the family despite the Shimura house becoming a crater and no hero coming to check on Tenko in a busy street. While it doesn't change the facts that Kotarou was a shit dad and the hero society is heavily flawed, AFO also took away the chance of little Tenko getting a better life as his mom was starting to put her feet down and ready to divorce his father. Something that Shouto's mom couldn't do after four children and being pushed to her limits. There was a chance! Shimura Tenko could have had a more well adjusted childhood. He could have become a hero with his sister. Maybe Kotaro could have had gotten his act together too. But AFO is petty enough that he would twist Nana's family to besmirch her lineage as revenge.

Shigaraki's father is such a pathetic man. He may have been a kid at that time but it should have been obvious that his mother was giving him away to protect from the horrible people she is fighting against that comes with the profession of a hero. She even left a note explaining her reason and showing that she still loved him for heaven's sake, but it seems he never had the mind to actually read it!
Despite all those years he has never grown or moved on from it and instead created a household where his family are under his 'rules' and oppression, which is probably why shigaraki's family never stood up against his father, for they too feared him. And instead of trying to talk to his son and show him why he believes that heroes are monsters and is a path of suffering, instead he beat him and leaves him outside to rot despite his allergies. Even when he is inside his allergies go crazy around his father. His father has embedded so much fear within him that he is under a lot of stress for just being within his presence.
Shigaraki's father deserved what was coming to him, he practically dug his own graves and refused to see the error of his ways and take account for his mistakes. Shigaraki's family did failed him for never really being there for him, but they were under fear and oppression as well, if things were different, they will probably be there for him ever more. They were even starting to finally stand up for him, but it took so long for them to build the courage, and it was far too late.

What in the actual heck are you on about? Are you for real? Kotaro clearly wasn't some psychopath. He clearly loved his family but let the trauma get to him. Yelling at your kid after they do something they were specifically told not to do is NORMAL. Slapping him was when he went too far, but he obviously felt regret right away and was willing to apologize. It was clearly a one time thing that had not happened previously.
His biggest crime was literally being a overally strict and slapping his kid the one time he let his trauma get the best of him. I can't fanthom how out of touch you must be to think he's had it coming. He definitely didn't deserve having his entire family and himself murdered by his youngest son christ.

"Scolding" your child is normal, but from what I have heard, the way a parent approaches or delivers said scolding defines who they are as a parent and how they affect the well-being of their own children and family. It is clearly hinted in several scenes that Kotaro has punished Shigaraki on several occasions, and each scene shows how much he has been traumatizing his own son, as evident where his allergies grow ever worse and seemingly "flare up" the moment Kotaro slapped him. Shigarki himself said "I Itch when I'm at home" in one scene, if his allergies are indeed caused by stress, then it is evident that Kotaro's established household was a stressful environment for his own son.
It is even hinted that Kotaro himself has never properly explained why he doesn't want his son nor his own family to talk about or even associate with heroes at all. Kotaro believed that these punishments were going to be how he will teach his son to reject heroes, and because of this, Shigaraki doesn't know the true reason why his own father has been hurting him, to the point of believing that his own father hates him.
In my point of view, this demonstrated how Kotaro's trauma practically defined him, for who he was as a person to his own family and as a father. I saw a household built upon rules, oppression, and fear, that clearly wasn't a positive environment nor the "Happy Family" that Kotaro desired, as stated by his own wife.
In that very scene where Kotaro slapped his own son, his entire family watched and were too scared to do anything, his own wife begged him to stop, his own daughter pinning the blame on her brother out of fear of being punished while crying and clinging to her mother. If that wasn't evident of a abusive household run by controlling sociopath who believed what he is doing right for his family without considering how it will affect them? Then what is!
Of course, Kotaro did felt regret after hitting his own son, but we were never shown any regret from him when he emotionally traumatized his own son all those previous times he punished him.
The very moment Kotaro said "It would've been better if you just hated me", after reading the letter left by her mom, he lost whatever sympathy I had left for him. At that moment, he was nothing but a selfish sociopath in my eyes, that couldn't let go of the past and was willing to harm the very family he desired so he wouldn't have to face it again. If that was the author's intention to sympathize with Shigaraki as a character, then he succeeded, to the point that some would've almost cheered for him when he finally destroyed the very man that was supposed to be his father, yet striped his innocence away and unleashed the spark of hatred that would turn into an inferno, and engulf all of society. Which is what makes it ever more tragic when Shigaraki slaughtered his entire family, even his own mother that tried to reach him. It almost makes you think of what could've been.

No however. Kotaro didn't want to protect his son. He simply hates heroes because he is an immature selfish person who condemns everyone for the sins of a few, and in fact instead of talking about the fact that his mother, due to her work as a hero, had had to make difficult and painful choices that led to her death, he imposed himself on his family with hatred, violence, and fear, insulting the memory of his mother. Kotaro constantly wallows in hatred and takes it out on those in his sights every chance he gets. He only knew how to complain about what he didn't have instead of appreciating what he did have. And that's because he's a selfish coward who doesn't understand that you can't have everything in life.

In my opinion, i think everyone in shigaraki family all have their own mistakes.
First, Nana abandoned Kotaro to protect him from the AFO, causing Kotaro to grow up and become a family father who doesn't listen to others and is always harsh with his own children (beating Shigaraki while saying that the hero would do hurt your family). Kotaro does not appreciate his happy life (a good wife, 2 good children, perfect parents-in-law) but instead only focuses on what he does not have. But if asked whether he deserved to be killed or not, my answer would be 50/50 (not worthy of being killed because he regretted beating shigaraki, and worthy of being killed because he was beat Shigaraki with an iron rod).
Shigaraki's mother and his grandparents were only wrong because they did not stand up strongly and always spoke up for Kotaro even though they knew he was wrong (but in my opinion this is just a small mistake and it can be overlooked).
Shigaraki's sister was also wrong because she confessed that Shigaraki saw Nana's photo even though they promised to become heroes together (this isn't even considered a mistake because she was so young).
As for Shigaraki, he is a child with psychological problems (as evidenced by the constant scratching of his eyes), he was restrained by his father for a long time (although it was not physically abusive, it is still psychological abuse). Things got worse when Shigaraki's father beat him because of his childhood obsession (it was even shown that Shigaraki's father was someone who refused to grow up to become a father). ). If Shigaraki was just a normal child, everything would be fine, the father just needs to apologize and not do it again, but Shigaraki has extremely dangerous abilities, he accidentally killed his dog, his sister and his mother and grandparents unintentionally, and while his mother ran towards him despite the fact that she had seen Shigaraki accidentally kill her daughter and that she herself would die, Then his father beat him with an iron rod, causing Shigaraki emotions to explode.
This is a tragedy of a family, no one is completely innocent, although the fault lies mostly with the father Kotaro (because he is a coward who does not know how to appreciate what he has, existing, selfish and only thinking about himself, brutally disregarding his wife and children, beating his children just because of his past). As for Shigaraki, he was initially innocent, but just because he had such a terrifying ability and mental instability, the shock of personally killing his own relatives, he needed someone to blame and Kotaro was the one. Ironically that Nana left her child to protect him from the AFO but created something even more terrible later.

Endeavor was a Hero, that's why he raised Todoroki to be a good person to the society, even though he was also a violent parent. Shoto wouldn't become a villian because society always supported his ideals and his powers were not seen as a curse.

Shoto was emotionally strong, and his childhood was not as terrible as Shigaraki's, because Shoto was not abused out of cruelty or hatred, but only as part of training. And even if he has real problems, it doesn't change that only Dabi became a criminal, but he was already crazy before that. Endeavor's other children also grew up with a normal mentality. Tenko, on the other hand, was a sweet and sensitive child, and therefore for this reason he was emotionally vulnerable to his father's cruelty. And her sister was a liar and a coward, because she lied to her father about her real intentions, and she also lied to him to save herself from what he would have done with her if she had known that she was involved too. So the whole family was oppressed and subjugated by Kotaro. However, this was not the case for Endeavor. None of them were that lax about what he did.

Leaving her son in foster care to protect him is absolutely ridiculous, sure it may have been with good intent, but you have to imagine how Kotaro would have felt being abandoned by his mother (also a note explaining her actions would mean jack shit to him since he probably thought she could be lying). Even though she left him that note later they show that despite this she didn't leave without saying goodbye to him in person. And Kotaro KNOWS that the words in that note were sincere. And that shows how rotten he is. By stating that he would have preferred her to hate him, he shows that knowing that her mother loved him despite everything, and that she had gone against her will, for him, instead of being a consolation, is only a reason for further hatred. So the problem is entirely with him, not with his mother.
