- Anthropologist Nastassja Martin and director Mike Magidson once again travel to the depths of Kamchataka, happy to find Daria and her family and some memorable characters in the heart of the forest for a summer. This time, the final leg of the journey is not by snowmobile, but by boat on the Itcha River.
Summer is a time of plant explosion and animal profusion, and it's a time for reunions. Daria's grandchildren leave their school in the city to reconnect, in the company of adults, with beliefs and a way of life in osmosis with the surrounding nature.
Nastassja is once again accompanied by her daughter to spend the summer in the intimacy of this Evenian family, which has become a little like her own...

Marvelous DOCUMENTARY
Evan utterly fascinates me. His fierce, rugged air of competence coupled with the deep peace he experiences living in the forest is both admirable and almost beckoning. I was sad when I finished the winter video with this extraordinary and special family, and am very happy to visit with them again. I must admit that, even though a stranger from the other side of the world, I find that I care deeply about this family. Love and Well Being from America :)

I live in a forest and have the luxury of modern amenities which they have few. Thankfully we're clad in bush gear. It is interesting to see people who have lived for centuries in the same location and still keep traditional customs. I'm pleased to have left that climate in favor of a warmer environment.

People have (in general) spent very little time in the natural world, those who have - somewhat are farmers and the rest are tourists. Please try to stay calm... I will start off with me - us act as if in a struggle against the natural world. I say no, No! I believe we struggle with and are a part of the natural world. That made a big change for my thoughts. The struggle is also often times the joy! That is one for some thought... Yes!? There are so many more words like 'struggle' to find and learn to enjoy. I find what I look for. Look for good or bad you can find it. Where yah look and who yah look with is also something. Yes!? I hope we all look better!
Sad. Yet many people avoid people who live in country. Farmers and nature? History shows large farms have destroyed soil and water with chemicals and over fertilizing, and not crop rotating. Then they make golf courses and condos. They forget this land was taken from us and we were forced to move. It is the world's history of migration. Just think, just two centuries ago, ninety percent of US was forested. Today we have more desert than forests. And we have two foreigners (two has - beens) running for office; both with corporate sponsors.

It is very verdant there. Surely vegetables must be able to be grown. But there is no mention of this.
Because few vegetables grow well there. The cold climate ensures a short growing season. It is very wet in summer and rains a lot. Rodents and other wildlife wouldn't allow such cultivation to take place, even with dogs. Maybe rice might flourish of the Himalayan type. The harsh environment is the reason for the spartan population which flourishes mostly along the coast where there's a fishing industry.

The Russians defeated Nazi Germany, losing more than 27 million people killed. Every Russian family has a person who died in that war. They know better than others what war and Nazism are. The Russians are a strong people and they will win again, every student in their school will learn how to handle a Kalashnikov assault rifle. And if they support their government they live well. Perhaps too little time has passed since the collapse of the USSR in 1991 and they did not have time to carry out all the necessary reforms, because this is a very young country. Fact

I've been so keen of Kamchatka for many years and would like to be able to travel there some day. Nice documentary, but I am a bit critic against that this is a bit made in the view that Russian language is a threat. In my country almost no native people don't speak their original language nor do my children speak our native language. We are adaptable and sometimes there is no need for a particular language and it can die out according to my point of view.

No such thing as easy there. The weather will kill you if nothing else gets you, including a brown bear. emphysema is probably the big killer there. Even the healthy people there have an average lifespan of 74.

I know this is Russia but it makes me miss Alaska. Looks the same even the miserable mosquitoes 🦟
Alaska was once a part of that kingdom that stretched to mainland AK. Czars claimed that land once they had clothing warm enough to endure that climate, and decimated the population all the way into Alaska where they put Russian settlements and forced labor, until Seward was approached by a Russian representative tactfully seeking funds for Moskow. Then, a deal got struck and money laundered through Man. Then US concocted a gold rush and Alaska got ransacked after being over fished and the extinction of many species, including natives which had gotten split up because of a Czardom that wished for everything, but destroyed everything in the process.

16:30 yo'n'ta change the wash water every so often, seeing as how the river's right there😢. Oh I'm in a troll mood today, but it's also true - when the water is so saturated that the dirt precipitates even when you stir it... then you wash the socks, and then you change the water!🤣
On a more serious note, thanks for these kamchatka documentaries. There are too mamy people, in most places now, for this lifestyle to be feasible for the vast majority of people. It's nice to know that this way of life still exists somewhere without government or hillbilly harrassment.
In the US, that would need to be taxed private property, or else they'd have to move every 2 weeks (FS and BLM rules) and wouldn't be allowed to repair or improve any permanent structures. You only can cut thin (young) trees (the logging companies de facto own the trees once they get big enough for commercial harvest). Indian reservations are their own thing, but usually aren't on the most useful land.

42:52 I think it's noticeable everywhere. Where I am, it used to be snow all winter. Maybe rain at the end or beginning of a storm, if there was warm air ahead of or behind it. Then in the mid-2000s we started getting more ice and freezing rain, and there was a brief period in the mid-2010s where most of our winter storms were ice or freezing rain. That was the worst. Now, it mostly rains in the winter, but we do get occasional snow. It's cold right now, and there's a little snow on the ground, but it's supposed to warm up and rain starting tomorrow. The snow will be gone by the morning after.
Which reminds me - throughout the episode, I wondered how these people dealt with obtaining petrol? I figured they bring some when the kids come back from town, in the summer, but that can't be enough for the year, can it?
Definitely both of the episodes are in my top 3 favourite documentaries. Love that family and peaceful voice of Daria.❤
